8GB
Horizon Forbidden West 3060 is faster than the 2080 Super despite the former usually competing with the 2070. Also 3060 has a better 1% low than 4060 and 4060Ti 8GB.
Resident Evil Village 3060TI/3070 tanks at 4K and is slower than the 3060/6700XT when ray tracing:
Company Of Heroes 3060 has a higher minimum than the 3070TI:

10GB / 12GB

Reasons why still shipping 8GB since 2014 isn't NV's fault.
  1. It's the player's fault.
  2. It's the reviewer's fault.
  3. It's the developer's fault.
  4. It's AMD's fault.
  5. It's the game's fault.
  6. It's the driver's fault.
  7. It's a system configuration issue.
  8. Wrong settings were tested.
  9. Wrong area was tested.
  10. Wrong games were tested.
  11. 4K is irrelevant.
  12. Texture quality is irrelevant as long as it matches a console's.
  13. Detail levels are irrelevant as long as they match a console's.
  14. There's no reason a game should use more than 8GB, because a random forum user said so.
  15. It's completely acceptable for the more expensive 3070/3070TI/3080 to turn down settings while the cheaper 3060/6700XT has no issue.
  16. It's an anomaly.
  17. It's a console port.
  18. It's a conspiracy against NV.
  19. 8GB cards aren't meant for 4K / 1440p / 1080p / 720p gaming.
  20. It's completely acceptable to disable ray tracing on NV while AMD has no issue.
  21. Polls, hardware market share, and game title count are evidence 8GB is enough, but are totally ignored when they don't suit the ray tracing agenda.
According to some people here, 8GB is neeeevaaaaah NV's fault and objective evidence "doesn't count" because of reasons(tm). If you have others please let me know and I'll add them to the list. Cheers!

Looking into this he didn’t re-launch the game to properly reload the settings and unload the data that cached in the VRAM. Also used DX12 instead of 11.

The 4070 Super can perform much better here, I know cause I have one. The Ray tracing isn’t demanding in this game.

Heh, Forever Winter, an early access game that is no where near optimized
Well if you don't like Forever Winter, here are another two tests. With maxed out settings, as this thread likes them.

Predator Hunting Grounds is running for two years now. I guess it must have been quite optimized by now.

These are 1080p.

And here is a new UE5 one. Aside from the game taking a favor for AMD cards, I am not seeing the future proofness of the likes of 3060 here either. Only 7-8 cards are actually playable and that's at 1080P again.

Yay, this argument again. Though to be fair I don't care to watch the video to see his point. The comments are enough though as many make the obvious points. It matters not how cheap 1440p screens are these days. That has been long overdue when I can go buy a 4k 60inch tv for sub $500. 10 years ago 1440p was $330 for a gtx 970. The problem is getting a gpu under $500 to run 1440p decently. Now it doesn't really matter on resolution, it matters at how good your gpu is at upscaling... 720p to 1080 or higher. And last I heard, HUB prefers DLSS so one is locked into overpriced team green. The LCD era has long taught me, almost 20 years now to run in native resolution for best picture quality. Upscale all you want but down scale just gets blurry.

Steam survey says 55% are 1080p monitors. 21% are 1440p as of Sept. 2024.

Oh noes, 1440p is the new 1080p

I don't think 1080p will be replaced until we settle on a new standard to replace 4K at the top. I don't know if that's necessarily 8K, but even then 1080p is just going to become the new 720p. So many displays were produced with that resolution that it'll be around for a long time.

1080p vs 1440p - I would be curious to know what the buying habits of most gamers are like. I've rarely replaced my monitor, and when I have done I think it's been 50/50 between necessity and non-necessity, and on that occasion I would be checking out my options versus the budget. Most recently I changed from 1080p TN to IPS. Maybe when I get a deeper desk I'll think of changing my monitor situation.

Compubase has some benchmarks of the Diablo 4 DLC. Seems 8 GB cards are reducing texture quality on Ultra although it doesn't seem to impact FPS
Also interesting note
The GeForce RTX 4080 Super, on the other hand, has more problems. Not only do the frame time spikes occur more frequently, they have also become larger and longer. Instead of around 1.5 ms variance between the frames on the Radeon, the test scene on the GeForce shows a variation of around 3 ms. With a sufficiently high frame rate, this is not a problem, but if the FPS falls into the range of 60 FPS or less, the game feels a little smoother with a Radeon.

CTD is a much bigger problem than reduced textures.

Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred requires a decent amount of VRAM. It is not entirely clear how much memory it actually requires, but 8 GB is definitely not enough for maximum texture detail, even in Full HD - regardless of whether a GeForce or a Radeon is installed in the computer, regardless of whether the PCIe interface is shortened or not.

The game is absolutely radical in this regard. If the graphics card memory is insufficient, Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred crashes without a sound. On an AMD graphics card, the game at least gave a short error message about the low VRAM memory before the game had to be closed via the task manager. On an Nvidia accelerator, the screen simply went black and a hard reset was necessary. Neither of these things should really happen in a modern game when there is a lack of memory.

From 10 GB of VRAM onwards, there were no more problems in the form of crashes, at least in Full HD. However, ComputerBase cannot rule out the possibility of problems occurring after a longer period of play. 10 GB was sufficient for WQHD, and from 12 GB onwards there were no more problems in Ultra HD either.
The bold should be a disclaimer for every single game's bigger bar better results published by traditional review sites.

That’s just the game setting the correct settings for you, even if you try to tell it you don’t want them.

^ If you don't want correct settings, feel free to crank everything over 9000 and see how much vram will help you. Here are some new gamegpu tests. Look how good the 3060 12GB performs!

I vote you get a lengthly vacation for being a troll.

I don't think he's a troll. He legitimately believes what he's saying despite countless people having pointed out how it's incorrect.

No actual troll would hang around for a year and put that much effort into posting when there're far easier targets. Meanwhile I can definitely expect someone with strongly held beliefs to do exactly that.

I don't think it should be against the rules to have an unpopular opinion or to even be factually incorrect. It costs others little to ignore a poster they don't like or to merely point out the incorrect statements or present a counter-argument with their own opinion.

If the other poster could be banned for "trolling" what prevents someone else for demanding that I be banned for the same reason just because they don't like my opinions in this thread or consider my arguments to be fallacious?

I agree. But he has definitely been arguing in bad faith for a while now.

Just my two cents.

Most cards sold are the midrange performance tier(i.e. from 4060 to 4070 and from RX 7600 xt to RX 7800 xt). These are the cards that gamers buy the most by far and they can't provide the RT performance good enough to buy them.

RT performance with acceptable gaming experience is only for the rich and Nvidia uses this dominance of gamers who want to play having money to buy a card with enough RT performance are the only satisfied with gaming RT experience.

This is the 8GB of vram is a problem thread, not the RT and upscaling thread. You should try to wrap it up with a nice bow on top by relating your comments to vram usage.

I don't agree with your appraisal of RT either. The all or nothing approach reviewers use with RT is nonsense. I use RT on an ARC A750 in some games, nevermind my 7800XT or 7900XTX.
