Feel exasperated with some people's tendency to give useless advice. E.g. the suggested solution to my mislaying things is 'in future always remember where you put things'.

I hate that when I'm googling a technical problem and all the results are just super obvious stuff. If those things had worked, I wouldn't be googling this right now!

And yeah, I have completely lost tools and various things by putting them somewhere and then forgetting where. Typically if it takes me more than like 15 minutes to find it, I accept my fate and just buy another because I'll never find it again. I don't even find it after I bought a new one, it's gone completely.

I do often eventually find them again, after giving up and buying another one - which is why I have so many micro-sd-to-usb card readers, for example.

Other bit of useless advice - with regard to my tendency after leaving the house to worry if I properly double-locked the door - "always try to remember as you lock it that you've done so". I do that, and then immediately forget that I did so. Maybe I should start taking a timestamped video of myself locking the door?

FFS another one of my KVMs died completely, lost 3 out of 4 ports. They are dropping like flies. it's the 2nd one I have to replace in a week. I can't afford to keep replacing these. They gave me a discount on the newer model, that apparently doesn't do that, but it's still $250 a pop. The broken ones still work as a video switcher but USB stops working on each port one by one over time.

The new one just came in, but it was to replace the one at work, but since I'll be working from home tomorrow, guess I'll be replacing the one here.

Our wildlife water uses a natural bedrock stream channel (dry this year). The upper portion where we add water is gravel fill on top of bedrock. The water drains out of the gravel into two open pools for the animals to use. We went on vacation so the water level dropped below the spillway between the gravel fill and the upper pool. The pools went dry so the animals dug out the gravel to get down to water. We expected this to happen. What we didn't expect was the weather staying ten degrees above average for the entire time we were gone and the animals digging down almost three vertical feet chasing water. The trail cameras showed that the animals were able to get some water the entire period we were gone. Refilling the system took over five hundred gallons of water. Our transport tank holds 55 gallons so I spent the better part of a day hauling water. The system is functional again so the critters should be happy.

I can't tell you how much time I've wasted looking for tools or parts I just set down and can't find a few seconds later. I swear it sometimes doubles the time it takes me to work on my vehicles.
It's why I believe in Membrane Theory.

You put it down and the membrane moves it into another dimension where you can't see it. You look away and the membrane shifts again bringing it back into your dimension and view.

Two Typhoon jets just went supersonic above my house! I was in bed post night shift at the time so I spent a few minutes wandering about the house trying to work out what had exploded!

Turns out they were sent to escort a air India jet from Mumbai that had diverted and put out a distress call!
All is well though.

Got a 2fer today. Went to biglots with my 20% off coupon only to find that my store's closing. Get a bunch of shit to store since I have a coupon, and they don't take coupons at closing stores. I got a trivial ~$5 off from their going out of business sale, but lost about $20 altogether.

That's annoying, but I'm really bummed about the store closing. I've been going there a looong time. I said in the other thread I don't care that much, and I don't really, but it's like a long term part of my life's going away. I just hate change...

Circuit City folding must have really gotten to you. My sisters cousin worked at Biglots for decades. My punk wife won't call him, to see if he was a victim.

Was starting to do my laundry this morning and instead of the woosh when water goes into the washer.. I heard

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Then I saw water flooding the floor. I paniced and shut off the water to the whole house.

Thought maybe the washing machine was leaking due to metal fatigue. Pulled it out and nope no leak anywhere but lots of water everywhere.

Had to turn water on to figure out where the leak was.

Apparently the bathroom in the basement that I never use next to the washing machine had it's toilet valve crack and water flowed everywhere. Even the turn knob cracked and fell down so no way to stop it other than the master shut off valve.

Ran to home depot.. got home, fixed that.. turned the water back on and guess what.. the flow control valve controlling water to washer are leaking.. shut off water.. got 2 new and fixed it.

EFFING METAL FATIGUE Saturday I guess!

Oh and apparently gotta replace a taco circulator pump soon if I can't fix it.

Does anyone have an upgraded taco circulator pump installed - the one that lasts a decade or more.. not just 1 or 2 winters? Can you please post a pic or description of the model?

Water related issues are the worse. Potential for so much damage if not caught fast enough. Stuff like that scares me more than electrical tbh. 99% of time electrical faults will stop themselves before they cause more damage provided it was done properly with metal junction boxes etc. Plumbing faults will just start doing more and more damage if not caught fast enough.

My earlobes were tingling, probably a CCA (critical coupon alert). I approve of this.

While clearing a new walking path on our land, I ripped the top off a wasp nest. We had to take a tactical pause.

Electrical code is killing me. My house was built 70 years ago and nothing is to code so even minor work requires spending thousands to "bring it up to code."

I feel ya, we're in the middle of redoing our deck/balcony, it's only 20 years old but apparently all the cement piers need to be at least double in size thanks to idiots in Chicago packing so many people on balconies that they collapse.

My Opnsense router running on a Windows Hyper-V instance with a pass-through SSD wouldn't start after the 24H2 Windows update. Turns out the SSD hit its wear out limit and because it's Intel, it enforces read-only mode when hit. I was able to get the router running by booting the ISO into live mode. I do have a recent config backup but cannot use it until I get a new SSD so all of my port-forwards and other configs aren't in place. I just missed the cutoff for same-day Amazon delivery

A would be client sent me an email which included a legal land description and a map for the proposed project. The two share no geographic overlap. After exhausting all feasible ways the legal description could be miswritten, still no overlap.

Was in a call so decided to start cooking my lunch. Put rice and water in pot turn on induction cooktop put it on boost to cook faster.

See it start to bubble so I start to stir. There is already rice burnt. Had to start over

The rice actually burnt brown and clump into pieces. Didn't think that was possible.
