supermicro is backordered since Zen 5 was released for my Turin motherboard.
I am idly asking myself:
  • Why are there still so few vendors offering SP4, SP5, and SP6 mainboards?
  • What is the change from SP5 rev1 boards to SP5 rev2 boards? Power delivery improved for 500 W socket power? Or flash capacity increased for dual Genoa+Turin BIOS? Or both or more or something else?
  • What is taking so long for rev2 boards to get into the channel? Perhaps it is just the usual loooong delay between a new server CPU generation being "launched",¹ and hardware actually making its way into sales channels.
________
¹) Meanwhile, some priority customers may already have many rows of racks of working machines many months before the "launch".

Arrow Lake had no chance even versus Zen 4 Vcache, so I guess it will look pretty bad Vs Zen 5 Vcache version in games.
Nov 7 looks like it's a year away lol.
There are a lot of games (UE5 titles for example), where extra cache doesn't really help much, if at all, so you can get a sample of titles where the CPUs would be more or less equal or Intel will win, even. Also, most reviewers test with JEDEC or XMP memory timings in 1080p with ultra settings, which for newer raytraced UE5 titles would be mostly GPU limited.

More expensive [mainboard] doesn't necessarily mean better.

People get discrete sound cards for better sound anyway.
I for one am using onboard sound but through S/PDIF — notably, TOSLINK. That is, A/D converter is external, and optical attachment eliminates the possibility of a ground loop.

Meanwhile, all AM5 CPUs are a sound card in their own right, which can be used via HDMI (playback, or capture too?) and DisplayPort (playback only), or am I mistaken?

Idiotic software codecs (every RTLxxxx and such) shouldn't be called sound cards IMO but that's nothing new either.

Too bad hardware accelerated sound cards were killed decades ago (thanks M$).

Anyway, today you need either to get out of the case with digital (hence SPDIF) or get the card of the case (various USB, TB and before FireWire cards).

In case some were still wondering, it can make a *huge* difference, quality-wise.

I do like my SB AE-7 even if it is still in the case

Where did I laugh at you? But yes, without the obvious hefty tuning that was done in the bench Igor posted I still think the chip will struggle to achieve +15% average in gaming vs 7800X3D. 5.2GHz just wont be enough for that outside of games that already benefit from Zen 5 architecture.

I considered Asrock, but I found an unbeatable deal on a X870E Tomahawk and have it coming, so I will be returning the Pro Wifi.
Idk here ? xD "Not, a chance in hell" then 12h later xD when tuned 9800x3d is 25%+ faster vs max tuned wcckek's best amd-owner's can do. But that meme was funny thou xD

Chips likes the ALC1200/1220 are more than good enough, problem is that up to the DAC input everthing work well but once it s converted to analog there s score of inherent issues, analog design is not that straightforward in a highly electricaly polluted environment like a MB.

Oh, a fellow 'keker, I thought you meant here! I wasnt laughing at you, lol -- I was being serious. My thoughts havent changed from the above either. If it launches at $399 OR is 15%-20% faster than 7800X3D in games (at stock), it will be absolutely killer. If it does both, I will gladly eat much crow and proclaim you as the tech Nostradamus!

It's not like people are upgrading from the 7800X3D to it. It will likely launch at $450 just like the 7800X3D. If ARL was more competitive maybe they would do a $400 launch but looks like ARL will not do well in games.

Maybe we should do predictions!

MSRP: $450
10-15% faster than 7800X3D at stock.

The ship has sailed on Zen 5 already. I think the demand will be down for 9800x3d after a week. They really should set the price at $399. People building new systems or buying new computers have largely left the PC market.

Nah, couldn't disagree more. When zen 5 is better priced it will sell. Being the best on the market, zen 5 X3D is separate enough from the standard lineup it doesn't matter. It will sell plenty when it launches.

It would have been a very different story had AMD launched the 9800x3D chip on Zen 5 launch day. This is the 3rd generation x3D chip. It looks like they are finally getting close to the non x3d clocks.

Lol my god. On that change.org one he’s using an 11 year old CPU (despite the fact he calls it 9 years old) with a 4070 Ti. Imagine complaining about that in any other period in gaming history.

“Why can’t I run Halo on my 25 Mhz 486DX” is basically the same gap

“Why can’t I play Crysis on a 166 Mhz Pentium”

I know it’s partially a reflection of technology stagnation but I can’t understand people that can’t come to grips with the fact they need to upgrade their hardware. I’ve been encountering that more and more in the workplace too, people using 5th/6th gen Intel quad cores refusing to upgrade... “it works fine”….
