Question Display resolution of 2560x1440 on a 4K monitor

I want to buy a 32 inch, 4K monitor now for a new desktop PC in 2025, but my current PC only supports up to 2560x1440.

Would very much appreciate it if folks who have a 32 inch, 4K monitor running Win10 or Win11 could set your windows "display resolution" to 2560x1440 and then view some text in a browser or word processor at your normal viewing size and let me know if the text is sharp or blurry. Also your opinion of running windows set to 2560x1440 on your 4K monitor for general use. (Until I buy a new PC in 2025)

To change Windows display resolution: Right click in a blank spot on the desktop > Click "Display Settings" > In the "Display resolution" box, change it to 2560x1440.

Are you sure your current computer only supports up to 2560x1440, or is it only saying that because you are using a 1440 monitor, and that is the max it can display?

What's your graphics setup look like now?

I personally run a 27" 1440 monitor and it looks great for gaming, photos, and work applications. Can't speak for higher resolutions. But it's all personal preference - consider taking a trip over to an electronics or computer store near you. They should have a few displays out to help you at least get a feel for resolutions.

Also, as an aside: if you go 4K and you play games, you may need a beefier graphics card when you get a new computer in 2025 if you want to play at the native resolution.

The displays at local stores like BestBuy, Costco, Walmart and Target are running canned videos that display on many monitors simultaneously. None where I could try changing the display resolution on a windows PC.

I'm 99% sure Windows will only show you what would be allowed by your display, and will not offer resolutions higher. The simplest way to answer your question is: what is your current graphics set up (eg, integrated graphics on a [insert processor name]; Nvidia/AMD ####....)?

My suggestion for the local stores wasn't so much to play with changing the resolution or seeing what those menus looked like. It was more of a "could you see yourself using this resolution on this screen size in your own home" sort of deal to see if 4K would be right for you. When I was considering upgrading from a 1080P to a 1440 monitor, I stopped in a Micro Center and played with some of the desktops they had set up, just to see what MS Office (one of my primary uses) would look like on a higher resolution display.

My current setup is an Intel i7-6700 with integrated graphics. I just Googled it and it does support up to 4096x2304. So you're right. Windows 10 was just showing 2560x1440 since that's the monitor that is connected.

I was thinking of the monitor only displays, but at BestBuy there might be a computer connected to a 4K monitor that I can try.

The only caveat for Skylake systems might be maximum refresh rate at 4K: if you look at the max resolution specs from Intel. If you can, you probably want to use a DisplayPort output (if one is a available to ensure you can have at least a 60Hz refresh rate).

I will be using the DisplayPort for the 4K monitor. That's what I'm using now for my 2560x1440 monitor.

If I find that things are too slow on a 4K monitor using my current PC, then I could set Win10's display resolution to 2560x1440 until I buy my new PC in 2025. Hope the display will be sharp enough at 2560x1440.

RTings can be good if you're looking for objective monitor reviews. They also have a page to show ongoing deals that link to their reviews, in case you have a few interchangeable options in mind.
