Are you talking to your kids about this upcoming election?

Something that hadn't occurred to me till a few minutes ago. With all the coverage going on and how divided everyone is with the election coming up, I hadn't thought to ask my daughter (she's 15) how she feels about it and that she can talk to us about her thoughts and feelings towards it. As an adult, I'm a little fearful about the potential results, thus leading to a little stress and anxiety, but I hadn't thought about how she might be feeling. I haven't really noticed any changes in her behavior over the last couple of months, but I'm going to at least ask her how she's feeling. You guys talking to your kids?

I don't have kids thankfully. I'd hate to bring them up in the fascist theocracy this nation becomes January 20th 2025 when that fat nazi is inaugurated.

I still think Harris will ultimately win, but I am concerned for what any child born today will face in their lifetime. My niece and nephews will come of age in a time with more extreme climate; competition over natural resources; very likely large-scale, climate-induced migration; and a risk for another world war type conflict due to those aforementioned factors.

Both of my kids are not having any children and I'm fine with not being a Grandpa, the way things are.

They're both in their 20s and living independently, it's not really a topic that comes up because we're all pretty much on the same page.

It's fucking depressing. In this video just after the 2:00 mark here they show a projection of how many days of 100+ degrees we'll have per year by 2053 and my county (Bexar County, Texas) gets way worse from 2023 to 2053 in their map.

What makes it really awful is 2023 is the hottest year ever recorded in San Antonio and by a huge margin. We had 75 days of 100+ in 2023, crushing our previous record of 59 in 2009 (also had 58 in 2022). Our average year is only 21 days of 100+ even if you average only over the last 30 years (by far the hottest 30 years ever recorded in South Texas). So in 30 years per that map we're looking at an average of around 100 days of 100+, eg 5x the current average. I have a niece and a nephew I love and I hope to hell they're the fuck out of this state by the time they're 25. Especially my niece.

Not really since I don't live in the US and my kids are 7 and below. But I'll talk about politics with my children when they start getting interested.

Chances are your child's behavior is already being manipulated by facebook, tik tok, etc.

Maybe sit down with her and watch "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix. My nephew watched it while he was in school a couple of years ago.

Thanks. I had actually forgotten about this being one I wanted to watch with her when she got a bit older.

Yes, my older son turned 18 this year but is actually reluctant to vote. He knows the violent tendencies of republicans around him and is nervous about it. I haven’t been shy explaining what both parties are about.

I talked to my neighbors kid.. he vehemently supports Trump.

I tried talking to him like I wanted him to understand what would happen because his dad is very sick and his insurance pre-existing conditions would be gone but he doesn't seem to care.

His father was a republican/ trumper but he's had health issues and he's more or less come around because healthcare is a big issue for him now.

Seems like a youngin who doesn't understand the good old days before the ACA: lifetime caps, long waiting periods for coverage of pre-existing conditions if you changed employees and didn't get COBRA, denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions (even when they were trivial or only tangentially related), and extreme costs for individual plans that had threadbare coverage.

My kids are 10 and 12. I do not bring up politics with them yet. I'm not interested in destroying their childhoods with fears of things they cannot control, or trying to indoctrinate them into a specific partisan viewpoint.

I try to set a moral example for them to follow, and use any opportunity I can to teach them how to discern good information from bad information, knowing that if I can do those things then they will naturally lean progressive when they are old enough to decide for themselves.

That said, if they ask a specific political question I will answer it honestly and explain my reasoning. When extended family members or friends bring up politics during a gathering I have discussed whatever issues are broached openly in front of them. Who knows how much they were paying attention to any of it, but they are aware that my wife and I hate Trump.

My wife is mostly apolitical, but she hated Trump the moment he announced he was running for president. She's also heard me complain about Republicans enough that she now votes straight Democrat in every election, and asks me advice about any ballot measures so she doesn't have to waste time researching it herself.

On the rare occasion that trump becomes a discussion topic it's pretty clear my kids think he is pretty stupid. My wife once asked my then 6yo daughter if she thought drinking bleach was a good idea to fight infection just to prove the 6yo was smarter than Trump.

I can't be the only one who initially read this as your human kids are furries and not as you referring to your pets as your furry kids.
Guilty as charged, especially now that I am cursed with the knowledge that the furry debate is hotly contested amongst Gen Alpha.

My son is autistic. When we got guardianship of him they said that he should retain the right to vote. I am so glad they said that because he is so proud to vote. We have already sent in our ballots and had them counted for Harris.

You do NOT want to talk to my daughter about Trump. Well you do if you want to see a very smart and wonderful young lady get fired up and start getting a lecture about how evil he is.

One piece of advice you should give them. This type of politics isn’t normal nor should it be.

Sounds like they have a basic grip on it
