I watched *some* of

Brassic - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9174582/reference/

Which is a hitherto unheard of (never a good sign) Bri'ish tv series from 2022 about a bunch of loser criminals from the somewhat-north of Engerland. Sort of a clone of the far better Guy Ritchie films, it's the same crew of idiots who have nothing in their life if not stupidity and petty crime.

.. and frankly, i'm not sure if i'm supposed to root for anyone here. Protagonist A wants to steal a car, but OH, there's an obstacle in the way.
Yeah ok but i don't give a fuck about this guy's pity. At least have them have charisma (like the FAR better Mr Inbetween), or some sort of "fight against The Man" that i may relate to, because if your protagonists are the sort of people i pretend not to see when i walk to the supermarket, your show isn't gonna do very well.

And, to make it worse, there are .. (checks wikipedia) twenty-four primary characters, and seventeen secondary. Yeah, fuck no.

5/10 - waste of time.

At least link to the time slot where they cover it (27min). Movie sucked. Wasn't scary, actors didn't seem in it and the parts they were playing apparently parts of their brains removed as their stupidity had me asking multiple times W T F.

The burn is definitely slow. So much that I'm having a hard time finishing S1, even though I like it. I think I have 1-2 more episodes left, and I actually forgot about it lol. Looks like I'll be finishing it up this weekend.

I am definitely looking forward to Silo S2, and also The Morning Show whenever that gets released.

I'm the only one in my family who likes slow shows, so I get it haha. Last episode is fun, gave me goosebumps a couple times!

The last episode of season one of severance was excellent. Imagine watching everything but that? So strange.

Also, having read the silo books, season one was not mostly filler 😂

Ted Lasso was my introduction to Apple TV. Severance has been the second show. Yet another app to pay for on my Roku, but so far pretty good content!

i never made it to the last episode of Severance

Oh boy, you missed out then lol. Although it is in the same vein, fwiw. But I like slow, thought-provoking shows like this. It's kind of like the Lo-fi Youtube music channel for me lol.

holy fuck,

i... i've just watched a video by jordan peterson. I'm subbed to his channel, and to quite a few other channels that have his content. Why?
Because i know him from this

now, in these last, idk 2 years, a whole bunch of people have attacked me for praising him on social media. And i figured, oh well, you know, people are so dumb that they literally cannot understand what they are looking at. Jordan Peterson, essentially a left-leaning humanist.

Holy mother of god. I've just witnessed the guy use the worst rethoric to praise Trump unabashedly; arguments that ANYONE who has - forget attended his courses - watched a single of his lectures could pick apart.
"Trump has such a strong work ethic!" (guy who spent more time golfing that in the oval office)
"He abstains from alcohol !" (known user of speed)
"Loves his family !!" ( .... )

WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED.

Yeah but see, this isn't good. If your show is 9 episodes long and all the good stuff is concentrated in the last episode, then you failed at writing a series. I'm ok if the season finale is *better* than the previous episodes, but i had lost all interest by Ep 6, and then tried to keep watching but my interest was failing. I made it to the very beginning of Ep 9 and just could not go on. At the point, it doesn't matter how great your finale is, if people need to suffer to get to it.

I watched the first episode of The Peripheral - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8291284/reference/

extremely pretentious show about a futuristic VR set that send you into a really-real alternate reality. From some of the people behind Westworld, and already cancelled. Also with Chloe Moretz with a horrid souther accent, and apparently written by people who have never played a videogame ever. (pretty big fault for a tv show about videogames)
Tons of absolutely-a-nobody characters. Jesus christ; HERE, there you go. Do better, hollywood.

5/10 - bleah.

WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED.
His wife almost died and Russian doctors saved her through some weird treatment. So I guess he feels indebted to whole of Russia somehow. Also, maybe his wife has Russian roots? I know his daughter's name sounds Russian. So add these all up and Trump is the only one who would "help" Russia. I think the guy's terribly conflicted. It could also be some sort of blackmail since he's been to Russia. Who knows what they have on him. Or he was brainwashed extensively while he was there. I generally love his videos. But I was kinda taken aback when I saw him talking with Musk and agreeing that Trump would be good for the US.

i watched the .. uh .. think "so bad it's good", but replace "good" with "sad".

Pixels (2015) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2120120/reference/

Starring Adam Sandler and, surprisingly, Peter Dinklage.

Sandler is a kid who grew up in the 80s, and he was a wizard at arcada games. After getting beaten in the 1982 world championships by Fire Blaster (Dinklage), he fails at life, doesn't go to MIT, doesn't grow up to be a genius.
But, his 1980s buddy (Kevin James) does become President Of The U.S.A.

In the present day, Earth Is Attacked By Aliens(tm), because they captured some space probe with 1980s videogames and they think it is a challenge to fight. So they are essentially being attacked by 1980s videogames, and Sandler is the Champion(r).

.. the first problem is that, the whole point of the story is the rags-to-riches of Sandler's character, ridiculed by everyone for being a loser, but given the chance to save the world with his otherwise useless skill. And Sandler loooooooooves to create these loser-to-winner characters, and as a result he doesn't do shit until forty-seven fucking minutes in.

The jokes, well they are not great. It's like, they wrote them, but had no intention of them ever being funny; and almost actively tried to make sure they have zero comedic timing.
If there is one thing Sandler does not know how to do, it's deadpan, like, zero, nada, nicht.

Peter Dinklage is magnificent, as always. The foil / love interest Michelle Monaghan is a pleasure to the eyes, and the CGI is fairly entertaining. The acting is actually good from everyone, it's just that the scenes are written to not be funny. It's also weirdly well directed, and the dialogue is competent. Really, the only element that, absurdly, fails in this comedy, it's that the jokes are ridiculously not funny. I've said this before, "oh such and such film wants to be a comedy but it's not funny at all", but here is more like, they are actively trying to present the joke in a way to not make you laugh, as if this was a comedian explaning to another comedian in a professional way how a certain joke is structured, and how it should be delivered - but not trying to make them laugh.

It's a shame because it's otherwise a competent film. My vote: 5.5/10 - a film you can use the VLC 5sec skip button on at leisure and not feel bad about it.

6/10 for me. It was a decent and fun watch. Didn't think too hard. Sandler doesn't shine in comedy roles much, except for few instances. The last ones I remember him from are where he bets on basketball and another where he's a basketball scout/coach. Both had him play roles unusual for him.

I just rewatched Mr. Deeds last week & still love all his OG stuff. "Is this...Hawaiian punch?" hahaha

i watched

Otto e Mezzo (8 1/2) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056801/reference/

Fellini's "masterpiece".

Which somewhat mirrors Fallow (Bruce Willis) in Bonfire Of Vanities, in that the protagonist, Guido - played by Marcello Mastroianni, but essentially a stand-in for Fellini himself - is an auteur, cuurently suffering from writer's block. He's due to make a great film about the liberation of the Man and the Ideal Woman, but can't seem to get going. Being a successful director, he's got money, and thus an entourage of people who whisper to him whatever convenient lies he needs, making the situation worse.

At the start of the film he has hired a film critic to go over the script, and the critic tells him the film lacks any point, any meaning - which is the very film we are watching.
Guido has several "visions" during this period of disturbance, mostly generated from the relations he has with the people around him - from those who praise him as a genius, to those who think he's a moron, from the producers who own him, to the women he wants to possess, the priests who advise him to be pudic and moderate, and the starlets who want him to be lascive and wild.
He tries to find inspiration, or guidance, or even absolution, in the various characters he encounters, but all of them fail into giving him the spur to proceed with the film, to inspire him to "one single truth". Instead, he decides that the film needs to be made for all of them, rather then for one supreme calling.
In the end, Guido AKA Fellini, "makes the film". This is represented onscreen by a group of people holding hands and dancing, and then the film ends. Yeah.

The entire film is strongly surreal; this can be, a normal dialogue that has a few nonsensical phrases thrown in, weirdly dressed scenes, a troupe of clowns representing Fellini's masterpiece, characters appearing out of nowhere ..
The dialogue is also quite slow, and delivered in a very roundabout way. There's some quite on-the-nose allegories, such as a scene where Guido is walking along a priest and a guy who is clearly meant to represent the devil, and yet the priest and the devil are finishing one another's sentences.

Keep in mind that i watched this in the original italian. And, i understand (most) of the hidden references. With that said, i would not recommend this to my worst enemy.
Maybe you think i'm a fool for wanting content in a film about a film which its own director thinks is meaningless, but 8 1/2 for YEARS sat on the throne of the Bestest Film Italy Could Ever Make, and i not only hate it for the waste of 2 hours and 15m that it is, but also for the negative influence that it's had on Italian cinema through the years. THIS is why italy hasn't got a single hero who kicks ass, or the why our lives must be lived in unescapable misery; Neorealism has been a plague on this country.

The current IMDb rating is 8/10 (half a point shy of being meta-referential). My vote: 4/10 - an experience of suffering.

i also watched .. man i can't pick a decent film these days ..

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21235248/reference/

Another depressingly bad film. Mind you, i found Afterlife to be quite tolerable, because it used a reasonable format; you got the why, which is the family about to lose the farm, the mysterious inheritance, the secret lies about Egon, and then the one "special" character (the girl), so all in all it was watchable.
This instead suffers from that "2024 Hollywood production"; there's too much of EVERYTHING. Too many protagonists. Too many sidekicks. Too many random "i'm in 1 scene only and then i'm gone forever" minor characters that have to be written like they are the star of the show. You know, the reason why those characters exist in the first place is to show you that THE PROTAGONISTS ARE SPECIAL. That's why you have the soldier that gets unceremoniously killed by the alien/monster/robot, so that you then fear that the same could happen to our heroes .. while at the same time knowing that can't happen.
The cast stars *everyone*, and once again they have that indian guy (Kumail Nanjiani) doing the same character he does in every film, while i reckon i decent decision would instead be to never cast him again ever in anything ever. Mr Mediocre AKA Paul Rudd starts as Useless Person, eh ok i have spent enough time on this review. It's shit.

I saw Mr. Deeds. Man, that movie's gonna give fits to feminists (girl falling that hard for the guy, seemed unreal). But they really don't make stuff like that anymore. It's crazy what studios were willing to do back then

Didn't you watch Substance???
it's in the pipeline.

Instead i found an older post .. of mine .. saying i was gonna marathon the William Friedkin films .. which i never got around to do - probably because i watched The Caine Mutiny Court Marshall and spent a lot of time praising it.

So i watched Killer Joe - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1726669/reference/

which was ok.

Somewhere in Desperation, Alabama, a 20-something trailer-trash drug dealer has had his two ounces of coke stolen by his gf, and goes to crash at his dad's trailer. He's got goons on his back who will kill him for the money, and comes up with a scheme to hire a killer - Joe - to kill his mother, who has a life policy of fifty grand payable to her daugher, Dottie.
So the whole crew is the kid, sister Dottie, father and stepmother. Dottie is played by the amazing Juno Temple, who is very young, and very naked, in this film. She has the kind of .. illegal .. attraction about her.
In fact Joe shows up (Matthew McConaughshshehsgsh) and when he finds they don't yet have the money to pay him for the murder, he says yeah cool, pay me later, just let me fuck your daughter.
Everyone is cool with this, including Dottie. Maybe because the rest of her family are a bunch of fucking losers, while Joe is the tough guy who can protect her.
The murdering goes down easily, but obviously, as all these characters are damned, shit manages to go sideways anyway.

It's ok and just ok not because it lacks talent - it doesn't, from the acting of everyone involved to Friedkin's direction - but just because the characters are just such shit people. This is meant to work in the script, as the reason why Dottie wants to break free from them, which would then make the audience relate to her decisions, such as wanting to elope with Joe, but the story is originally of a stage play of the same name, and the film doesn't have the same impact over the runtime.

My vote: 6/10 - would have been lower without Temple and McCugachachachicachaca.

Rules Of Engagement - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0160797/reference/

Another well made, but ultimately uninteresting Friedkin film.
Samuel Motherfucker Jackson is a US Marine engaged in a evacuation of the US Ambassador in Yemen, during a demonstration that turns into a full scale attack. After the marine garrison soundly defeats the attackers, the Yemeni government removes all evidence of weapons from the crowd, and starts a political conflict with the US Department of National Security or whatnot. The departmental advisor burns a critical videotape showing the crowd shooting at the embassy, and instead send down our man Jackson hoping to pin the entire incident on him.
Vietnam-era friend and lawyer Tommy Lee Jones acts as the defense, and henceforth this is purely a courtroom drama. But oh boy, Friedkin loves to set up his films, he will tell you eeeeverything you need to know about his characters, about the situation, about the past that led to that situation, and while that may have paid off here, the actual courtroom scenes lack anything approaching the genius of films like A Few Good Men, or even his own Caine Mutiny.
Also starring Ben Kingsley in a brief role as the ambassador, Guy Pearce as punchable-face and prosecutor, and a nobody thatacts like it's a 1980s cocaine movie in the role of the scumbag who destroys the tape.

6/10 but, there's better films out there with the same plot.
