I haven't been all that keen over the years to extending my mobile access with other devices, because I don't travel that much, don't work for a living and don't feel a need to be totally plugged in and "beam myself up, Scotty" situations. I occasionally access the web on my cellphone. OK. Wonderful.
The first laptop I ever owned was a 2007 Gateway executive model which I bought as surplus in 2014. When the gov'mint issued stimulus checks during the COVID epidemic, I bought an LG "Gram" laptop -- probably purchased without enough research; I took greater pains when ordering an Acer Nitro for my youngest brother as an Xmas present, and I mildly regret that I gave it to my other brother when our baby brother died at age 66 just after that Xmas holiday.
I've integrated the LG into my household network, wirelessly connected to my router. In previous experiences, I've been able to connect my previous laptop to a hotel's internet access when our house was fumigated and we had to move to a Holiday Inn for four days. I've never had a problem with establishing a connection between any PC and available internet. Until now.
We first discovered my problem when I visited my surviving brother near Reno last November, as I wanted to access my bank and investment accounts. We could not get my LG to connect through my brother's router. He since upgraded his router. He has a "nothing special" Spectrum subscription, just like my own Spectrum subscription.
So I was visiting Bro last week as a getaway vacation for my birthday, hoping that we'd have better luck. We didn't. The one thing I didn't do -- as advised by either Windows 11 or my Opera browser: I didn't reset the computer's network connection entirely. That would've been a brute force solution, and I wondered what I would have to do when returning home, although -- really -- it would not present an insurmountable problem.
The LG shows that there is "internet access", but the Opera browser tells me something else. I'm wondering if there is some vestigial aspect of networking -- like the MAC address of the router or something similar -- which is preventing this connection of the LG at my brother's house.
I'm going back up there for Thanksgiving. Any suggestions or insights? I used to be a "computer whiz" or was regarded as the family "guru". But I'm 77 now, and my batteries are running down. I don't have the patience with troubleshooting that I did 10 or 20 years ago. And I can't spend all my time during visits trying to sort this out.
PS Using EDGE as a web browser, I still meet the same roadblock.
