The Wild Robot - 8/10 Story was so-so. I'll admit I got goosebumps and almost shed a tear during some parts. IDK if it was my audio that was messed up or what, but Pascal's voiceover was just weird to me. Maybe it's because usually animation makes the characters look like the actors to some extent, but it was weird seeing Pascal's character talk. The animation/CGI was incredible though.

Same thing happened to me with Holly Hunter's voiceover in the last Incredibles. It just felt plain weird because my brain couldn't reconcile the image on screen with the face of Holly Hunter that kept popping up in my head. Haven't heard Pascal's voiceover but if it makes him easily recognizable, that's gonna be an issue. I tried watching Transformers One last night. I could detect Hemsworth in some dialogue but he made himself sound different enough that it wasn't jarring to hear.

It wasn't recognizable to me. When I watched the Mandorlorian I could tell, but, I didn't even realize he was in the movie until we paused it so my wife could go to the restroom. That's when we noticed it was him doing the voiceover lol

Smile 2 - 2/10

It is my dumb self that fell for the whole "better than the first one" crap being spewed with this movie. Oh my god it was so bad. It's worse than the first one by far and like my main complaint of the first one was I wanted MORE of the whole bit that the movie is about, and this one gives you even LESS than the first one. It's clear reading the reviews on imdb that it's a bunch of fake reviews giving it high ratings because if you read the lower ones, they are all starting off with the same thing of like "I don't know what movie all these high ratings watched..." because the high ratings just makes no sense.

1 point for concept and 1 point for one scene that was the only creepy part of the movie.

wtf happened to Andor 2? No actual release date for Season 2, this is mind-blowing. Best thing to come out of the Disney Wars world in a while.

i'm watching the first season of Miracle Workers - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7529770/reference/

Show i've never heard of before - never a good sign.

It's .. weird. On the fence between good and bad.

Steve Buscemi stars as a douchebag God. He sits on his ass all day, mourning for the early days of humanity where he could raise the dead and rain fire. The various "employees" of his "corporation" are the angels doing normal day to day stuff, none of which is "godly". They make sure rain rains, dirt stays dirt, leaves fall, and so on.

Protagonists Aleks and Ezekiel (Geraldine Viswanatan, and Daniel "I'm Harry Potter" Radcliffe) star as two lowly employees of the Department Of Prayers Answered, whose normal day to day tasks are helping the faithful find their car keys and such.

One day God decides he's had enough, and will destroy the earth and replace it with a restaurant. Aleks gets him to commit that, if she can answer 1 serious prayer (instead of the usual "oh god please save my cat from that tree") then God will not destroy the earth.

The premise is good, the introduction is good. The actual script is that Aleks decides, against the better advice of Ezekiel, to answer the prayer of two morons to fall in love for one another, which turns out is extremely difficult. The two angels wpork away at their quasi-Fallout machines trying to make the magic happen, but are unlucky, or dumb.
Unfortunately this is the main content, and i'm on Ep 3 and it's not really funny. Steve Buscemi as God is extremely funny, the other angel managers are funny, but the guy & gilr angels and guy & girl humans are not funny.

I'll give it a few more.

I'm going into Season 2 of Miracle Workers, where the same actors are now characters in the middle ages. Don't ask why.

For season 1, i would say 6.5/10 - fun, some good laughs, but somewhat uneven. Buscemi knocks it out of the park as the dumb God, but the rest of the material is not up to par.

i got the names wrong on my previous review, the main girls' name is Eliza, she's Aleks in S02.

Don't move 6/10

Another story about a serial killer who abducts his victim, and they try to get away. In this case, a few things were different. The killer injected his female victim with some kind of paralytic drug. Also, the woman had recently lost her son and was very depressed. Her disposition turned around as her struggle to survive awakened.

Her struggle to overcome the affect of the drug did make it interesting. The pace of the film was pretty good with some cool dramatic scenes. The woman's struggle resulted in random encounters with strangers the killer had to deal with. However, there were too many things that didn't make sense.

Terrifier 3 - 8 or 9 out of 10 - this is my favorite of the 3. I'd rank them 3 2 1 from favorite to least favorite. Yes it has over the top gore but it's become known for that now. It's not even gross to me though because it's so over the top that it is comical. Art is just hilarious in this movie though. It has a great vibe to it that just feels like a classic slasher movie.

Don't bother. It goes downhill fast
eh .. well, i will give it a go, but will keep my finger on the skip button.

Ask me 10 years ago, i would have told you that changing anything about the delivery of the film, is a betrayal against the director. Not for us mere mortals to decide how the pacing is used to set us in the mood, or to heighten a reaction to an onscreen event.

But, yeah, today we are bombarded by so much shit; there's no chance that anyone could watch ALL the films.
When i grew up in Italy, we had a whopping TWO tv channels, then up to 5 by the time i was 10. Deciding which one of the five 8PM programs to watch also meant who in your school you'd hang out with, because you'd talk about the show you watched the night before. Therefore this was more socializing than just plain entertainment.

Today we don't really get much of this effect. I think this is the primary reason why some shows become hugely more popular than others, regardless of quality; because you find more people to talk about those show with - think Lost, or GOT.

So, it's really not possible to watch .. even a fraction of what's out there. This show, Miracle Workers, is decent, and i hadn't even heard about it. There's so much stuff to see if you want to have a sliver of a chance of having watched the same thing as other random human you're talking with, that i feel it's absolutely ok to zip through a show with the 5sec fast-forward button. When you get to an important scene, you can watch it in full, when you're dealing with filler, just zip through until the film picks up again with the main plot.

Escape at Dannemora 7/10

TV series based the escape of two inmates from an upstate New York prison. Directed by Ben Stiller and starring Benicio Del Toro, Patricia Arquette and David Morse. Very well done. Benicio is great as one of the convicts (Richard Matt), similar to past roles he's done with this type of character. I've enjoyed David Morse's acting in the past, and think he was a good casting choice for the prison guard who befriended Matt.

But the real show is Tilly Mitchell (played by Arquette) , who allegedly had sex with both convicts and aids their escape. The story focuses more on the relationships with Tilly and the two inmates, more than the actual escape. And also speculation as to Tilly's psychology that motivated her to fuck up like this. What makes it so crazy is it's based on a true story. I'm three episodes in, and really looking forward to watching the rest.

ok now I have to watch the second Joker movie after reading this Tarantino take

“I really, really liked it, really. A lot. Like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking,” Tarantino said. “But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldn’t think worked like a movie, but that I would appreciate it for what it is. And I’m just nihilistic enough to kind of enjoy a movie that doesn’t quite work as a movie or that’s like a big, giant mess to some degree. And I didn’t find it an intellectual exercise. I really got caught up into it. I really liked the musical sequences. I got really caught up. I thought the more banal the songs were, the better they were. I find myself listening to the lyrics of ‘For Once in My Life’ in a way I never have before.”

Tarantino said that he saw a bit of his “Natural Born Killers” story in the “Joker” sequel, comparing Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga’s Lee Quinzel to that movie’s disturbed serial killer couple Mickey (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory (Juliette Lewis).

“As much as the first one was indebted to ‘Taxi Driver,’ this seems pretty fucking indebted to ‘Natural Born Killers,’ which I wrote. That’s the ‘Natural Born Killers’ I would have dreamed of seeing. As the guy who created Mickey and Mallory, I loved what they did with it,” Tarantino said. “I loved the direction he took. I mean, the whole movie was the fever dream of Mickey Knox.”

“On top of all that, I thought it was really funny,” Tarantino added, saying that he saw the movie in an “almost empty IMAX theater” and therefore could “laugh without bothering everybody. I know I’m laughing at scenes that other people wouldn’t be laughing it.”

Tarantino had particular praise for Phoenix, whose performance as the Joker in the 2019 movie won him the Oscar for best actor (over Leonardo DiCaprio in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”). The director said Phoenix gives “one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in my life in this movie,” referring to “Folie à Deux,” and he also commended director Todd Phillips for being a joker himself.

“The Joker directed the movie. The entire concept, even him spending the studio’s money — he’s spending it like the Joker would spend it, all right?” Tarantino said. “And then his big surprise gift — haha! — the jack-in-the-box, when he offers you his hand for a handshake and you get a buzzer with 10,000 volts shooting you — is the comic book geeks. He’s saying fuck you to all of them. He’s saying fuck you to the movie audience. He’s saying fuck you to Hollywood. He’s saying fuck you to anybody who owns any stock at DC and Warner Brothers […] And Todd Phillips is the Joker. Un film de Joker, all right, is what it is. He is the Joker.”

Tarantino loved the sequel far more than the 2019 original, which he found “one-note” for most of the runtime until it reached its climactic scene where Joaquin’s Joker shoots Robert De Niro’s talk show host live on air. The director called that moment “one of the best scenes made in the last 20 years, of this century. Easily! The whole movie was worth it for that.”

With its several musical numbers and divisive twist ending, “Joker: Folie à Deux” alienated a lot of comic book moviegoers. But Tarantino views these provocative choices as strengths. Listen to Tarantino’s full discussion on “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast” here.

Tarantino is annoyingly enthusiastic about a lot of stuff that most people don't care about. So if this movie is a 5, Tarantino raising it to something like 7.5 would be totally not surprising.

I like things the masses don't care about, so that works for me. Doesn't mean I'll love it, but worth checking out. If I just cared about what most people cared about, life would be dull and boring.

The last episode of the Penguin was pretty intense. Excited for next Sunday.

This is a really strange indie. It takes a few minutes to get going and then it gets okay. I really enjoyed this and would give it at least a solid high 6 or maybe low 7.

Miracle Workers : 5.5/10

it gets steadily worse and more repetitive. Buscemi is far better than anyone else. The lead girl was decent, Harry Potter was mostly meh but had his moments. Script does not survive past season 2. ermm .. make that past HALF of season 2.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024)

Directed by Guy Richie but not written by him, and I think that's part of the problem. IMO 'Inglourious Basterds' set the standard for films of this sort, and this film is a distant runner-up.

This film isn't bad, it's just not that good. It needed some particularly decent dialogue and performances to hit it out of the park.

Hellboy: NOT ACTUALLY HELLBOY - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26757462/reference/

.. if you give but 30 seconds to thinking "uhm, what was it, that was GOOD about Hellboy" you should invariably come up with the answer "Ron Perlman as Hellboy". So when you start with *not* having Ron Perlman as Hellboy, you know you're on track for a stinker.

The film is just some guy cosplaying as Hellboy with a shitton of CGI monsters, a vaguely Constantine-esque train of creature myths we're supposed to know (all created for this film, obviously), and an incomprehensible plot that i had zero investment in.

4.5/10 - take your average "has-monsters" TV show and remove whatever charm the protagonists may have.
