Checked my pay stub and I make a grand extra this pay cheque, so 3k instead of 2k. Worked a holiday, and also looks like EI and CPP is done for the year, so that's a big chunk of cash. That's going to make a nice payment on the credit line.

I suppose this is a "good thing", though it's more baffling than anything else. Managed to log back into my gmail account for the first time in four years. Four years ago it suddenly decided my password wasn't sufficient and kept asking me to verify via a text message - only I'd failed to update the details of my mobile number after getting a new phone and it insisted on sending the code to the old one. Hence it proved impossible to log in. Even tried to see if I could get my old mobile number back in order to solve the problem, but that was apparently impossible.

Eventually gave up (everyone I regularly corresponded with via that account I'd either fallen out with or they'd died - had actually come to the conclusion that that email account was cursed anyway).

But now I just on the off-chance tried again and it accepted my password and let me log in normally.

Oncologist called and said the tumor which wife has in her stomach might not be cancerous.

Appointment scheduled for it to be removed in early December. Since she had adenoid cystic carcinoma before, that tumor was also removed with radiation and chemo done, we have been watching for any other signs. We were afraid it might come back as it hides and might appears anywhere within the body, even if previous treatment was successful.

I guess we are lucky that this time it is not cancerous. 🙏

Got my Google streamer yesterday and set it up. And I got to say it's so nice to have a fast TV streaming device. I have a TCL I got during covid, Roku TV is the OS, and it's fine but it's too slow. So this is a beautiful change of pace.

You could be doing anything and just press the home button and it just appears almost instantly. Everything navigates faster and loads much faster.

just realized that it's the clock change this weekend. Since it's the fall back it means I get an hour of overtime since I'm working night shift! Nice, I'll take it!

Nearing the finish (no pun intended) line of my speaker project. I finished wet sanding the clear coat on the second speaker yesterday. For this final wet sanding, I started with 2000 grit and ended with 2500 grit (that was the highest wet/dry paper I had).

For the first speaker, I used Novus 2 (it's what I had; I really didn't want to spend more money than I needed to since I spent so much on paint) to buff out the fine scratches, then Scratch Doctor to polish out the Novus 2 scratches.

There are still some really shallow scratches if you look under direct light, but they're not really noticeable. I'll probably do a couple more applications of Scratch Doctor and then install the speaker components and call it good enough.

I'm doing this all by hand so it's taking a while and the results probably aren't as good as if I had a buffer, but whatever. I'll probably finish the second speaker today.

It doesn't come through in the photos, but the top of the speaker has some uneven paint lines under certain light, though it's not terrible. And I didn't do a great job completely flattening it, so you can see some waviness.

If I did this again, which I probably will at some point since it was fun, I'd use better tools/materials and make it perfect. But I did get that mirror finish which is what I was going for!

My phone camera does a terrible job picking up the color. I think I need to photograph it in natural light...

Crazy how COL seems to be an issue everywhere, something definitely needs to be done but no government seems to care as they all say it's happening everywhere, so they just dismiss it. Or in this case murder people protesting it.

I literally can't believe what I'm reading. It's the most awful, dystopian thing ever:

Twenty-nine children could be facing the death penalty in Nigeria after they were arraigned Friday for participating in a protest against the country’s record cost-of-living crisis. Four of them collapsed in court due to exhaustion before they could enter a plea.

...

According to the charge sheet, the minors ranged in age from 14 to 17 years old.

Frustration over the cost-of-living crisis has led to several mass protests in recent months. In August, at least 20 people were shot dead and hundreds more were arrested at a protest demanding better opportunities and jobs for young people.

I mean, America has its struggles as well. 53% of homeless sheltered people are employed & 40% of homeless unsheltered people are employed:

I have several friends who have gone through this situation...it's hard because you only have so many resources to share (couch to crash on, spare cash, etc.) & access to publicly-available resources is not always the best. But dang...the DEATH penalty for asking for better opportunities?! I'm not a fan of comparative suffering, but man, I have nothing to complain about!!

On my commute in this morning, I was moving up the onramp at my normal spritely pace (~90ish) when a gentle soul in a little red sports car absolutely blew my doors off, weaving in and out of the ramp traffic. My estimate is that the person was in excess of 120mph. She/he zipped across the traffic lanes to the left and just about made the car do a headstand braking on the tail pipe of a state trooper. I was LOLing most of my commute.

This is why I almost never drive freeways. I stick to surface roads whenever possible. I just don't feel comfortable over about 60 any more.

Yeah, I took an assaying class a couple years ago, lots of fun. Telling myself, "Okay, the furnace will be hot, no problem, my wife is a blacksmith, I'm used to the forge, just put on the face shield and the coat and the gauntlets, grab the tongs, and holy mofing Christ the furnace is hot!" It was really hot.
I looked into a cement kiln today. It was hotter. I don't need a telescope now to see the surface of the sun. It was amazing.

In some ways I don't care how much I spend. In others, I'm very price sensitive. I don't know why. It sucks to be financially limited. I guess I try to save money on things I need so I can spend money on things I want. So I went into panic mode when my Moto Edge 30 went blank just 5 minutes before free food delivery expiry time. My other phone with older Android clearly shows red bars at top and bottom when it's low on battery. Android 14 (or maybe customizations done by Lenovo) doesn't do this so I had no idea that the battery was about to go. Connected it to the charger immediately and cursed my luck. Took two minutes to get to 1% and then Android started. Went into the app, my order was saved in the cart, applied the promotion code and ordered it with free delivery. Phew! That was tense!

Oh, I saved something like $1.8

Don't laugh.

I found another intermediate mining claim covering my quarry from 1907. One thing I find interesting is that the original 1896 claim is oriented east-west, this claim northwest to southeast, and the final two claims north-south. Maybe someone bought a compass.

The original 1896 claim:

Even good penmanship is tough if you aren't used to it. Different eras had distinct styles, and it takes awhile to get in the groove where it can be reasonably easy to read. Luckily I don't have to do that much anymore.
