article said:
Unfortunately for PC graphics enthusiasts, it seems like Intel’s discrete GPU efforts are similarly seen as a failed experiment now. Gelsinger says he’s focused on simplifying the company’s consumer products now, and dedicated graphics cards / chips are apparently on the chopping block. He said:
How are we handling graphics? That is increasingly becoming large, integrated graphics capabilities, so less need for discrete graphics in the market going forward.
If Intel axes them, it won’t come as a huge surprise — its gaming graphics initiative only had very limited success with standalone cards, and only ever managed to play at the ultra-budget end of the field, which AMD is now threatening even more.

It would be a shame IMO if Intel exits the GPU market (again), but their ego probably can't stomach the idea of playing third fiddle until they've found a breakthrough.

It would be preferable if they stay in the dGPU market. I can understand if they don't though. Nvidia is close to reaching its final form. Mobile is where their APUs might be able to take some share against low end Nvidia offerings. Handhelds and minis offer potential for good returns as they are growing markets.

I do think that beefy integrated GPUs will make low to mid tier cards pretty much obsolete in the future (like Strix Halo). They'll likely try to emulate what Apple is doing with their CPU lineup.

I don't get it. The bread and butter of gpu's is the low to mid grade gpu. That would be the 4060 and 4070. Intel has their own fab and can create GPU's for cheap.

ARCs are always out of stock or never last too long when attractively/competitively priced. Do they not notice this? MAKE MOAR.

ARCs priced competitively is a money losing operation for Intel as their performance is poor for how big the GPUs are. Perhaps they could make the current IP profitable with enough volume, but the market seems to have indicated that there isn't near enough demand for them currently for that to be a winning strategy either. They need to significantly improve the performance per area of their IP in order to be able to be profitable.

The Steam survey definitely concurs; the 3060 has the greatest market share.

Then imagine a iGPU with 4070 performance. How big of a marketshare it will have when it will be everywhere, because you will buy a whole computer with it?

You sell CPU AND GPU at the same time, increasing TAM for both.

The market wants to go this way, because of the AI capabilities that will be bolted into the OS.

Then imagine a iGPU with 4070 performance.

Maybe in ten years' time one will exist (I doubt it, consider how much shrinkage would be necessary in all respects such as power usage, the 4070 needs 200W, let alone the trade-offs in having to wait for shared memory access), at which point just like with current leading iGPUs it will be doing low graphics settings at best.

And this is about Intel who can't even put out a credible discrete GPU option yet let alone their fantastical notion that they're going to skip mastering the discrete GPU business and go straight for a credible iGPU alternative to mid-range discrete GPUs. I remember trying out KOTOR1 on a Coffee Lake gen iGPU laptop, it didn't do well. My RX 6700XT can play the same game flawlessly with virtually zero GPU usage. That's the kind of leap needed for iGPUs to become contenders for the low/mid-end GPU range. I doubt Intel iGPUs have improved greatly since then.

I thought that Strix Halo is supposed to be roughly this performance?

We still have the belief that Integrated GPU is weak, and slow, because it is small.

Yes, Strix Halo should have roughly the 4070 performance.

All indications are that Strix Halo is going to be marketed mainly as a AI mobile workstation at (probably) MBP-like prices.

As much as I would *love* the idea that AMD is going to go from trailing NVIDIA's discrete GPUs for years to essentially spanking half of NVIDIA's current line-up of dGPUs with a mainstream-oriented iGPU as a prelude to the utter humiliation that AMD's next gen dGPUs would therefore bring upon NVIDIA, don't you think you're being a bit optimistic?

WHERE is going Nvidia to put their GPUs if SOCs will phase out dGPUs completely from laptops?

Well, this will certainly become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I've been curious about them for awhile but there's zero chance of me taking a chance and getting stuck with abandoned hardware now.

I thought Ian Cutress said take what they said with a nuisance? He was basically warning against this type of speculation.

This is getting increasingly off-topic, but what you're describing presents three possibilities:

1) Intel goes down this route and says to gamers "don't bother buying laptops with our CPUs any more"

2) AMD goes down this route and says to gamers "don't bother with us unless you are content with low graphics"

3) Both Intel and AMD say to laptop gamers that they should get a desktop.

Make no mistake people, the laptop market is considerably larger than the desktop market. IMO the notion that any of these scenarios occur at any point soon is absurd.

We should avoid conflating laptop graphics with desktop graphics. E.G. the RTX 4070 mobile only has 8GB of ram and performs about like a discrete 3060 when not vram limited. I can see Strix Halo matching up well against it.

While mobile is 80% of the PC market, the gaming laptop market is a much smaller segment. And most of those models are the entry to mid level. Nvidia would still own the high end to DTR even if Intel and AMD eat their lunch in the lower tiers.

The real fly in the ointment, is Nvidia will have their own ARM based SOCs coming soon. The stuff they are teaming up on with MediaTek includes AI PC and comes out next year? An important first step. I expect in a few years there will be an all green gaming machine, perhaps with it's own custom OS like Steam.

Armcharing it; I think Intel has to focus on powerful iGPUs or it is going to be yet another market where they miss the boat and get left behind. Better odds than trying to muscle in on the long established discrete market where Intel is Pee Wee and Nvidia is the Incredible Hulk.

It's do or die for Battle Mage. ARC despite its failings, was given a warm, welcome player 3 reception. I don't think that sentiment will be as prevalent this go around. DIYers concerned with long term support, bang for buck uncertainty, potential launch issues. ARC, Raptor, and Arrow have ranged from messy to disaster. They have to execute almost flawlessly, and somehow have attractive pricing or it's going to be tough sledding.

You know, people have been saying this. And all putting big IGPs has done for AMD has made their laptop sales worse overall because of the higher costs make it easier for OEMs to go with Intel.

Now AMD got a huge break with AI Hype on Strix Halo... but it's not entirely clear how big of a market there is for AI workstations.

When is this going to happen? People want Nvidia in their laptops, and I don't see this changing any time soon. Same with desktops.

1) The whole point of powerful SOC is that you have ONE chip that can target both: high-end mobile workstations, and high end gaming on the go.
2) Intel is actually focusing their iGPUs and the emerging market. Thats the whole point of developing their dGPUs - to get the drivers and software ready for mass adoption, when there is no other dGPUs attatched to their CPUs.

Intel GPUs will not die. They will morph. Which is what people are still resisting to do themselves, with their own minds about where the puck is going with computing.

Celestial dGPU had been cancelled from what Exist50 said. Intels execution is way too slow. What happened to Battlemage dGPU (G21)? Intel says zero about it. I wonder what Petersen thinks about it. He was so enthusiastic about Intels dGPU and future plans. With Battlemage dGPU likely the last Intel dGPU generation for a long time he must be disappointed.
