The Island of Dr. Moreau - 5/10 (streaming on Plex)

I've been wanting to revisit this movie for years but found it on none of the streamers but it finally appeared on Plex.

The first act is pretty epic with the insane shocking reveal but devolves into a mess.
.. which one ??? the Marlon Brando wreck ?

Unfrosted - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14914430/reference/

directed by Jerry Seinfeld and also starring him, Amy Schumer (which should give you an idea), and literally everyone else who has ever appeared in a not-funny comedy or SNL sketch, this is a not-comedy about the Kellogs cereal wars where every scene, EVERY scene and character, is exagerated. Chewing the scenery is the ground floor, then you start climbing.
Hugh Grant in the part of the Shakespearian actor who plays Tony The Tigerrrr was fun, everything else is atrocious. Not a film, but rather a 90 minute long skit for a saturday show that had a whole bunch of money to hide away in tax breaks.

3.5/10
I tried to watch this, but failed. Your rating is generous.

So I just finished Severance and glad I did. What a mind $#@^ lol. Such an intense ending and now I'm looking forward to S2! But man that took forever for me to finish. The burn was really slow and I almost gave up but you guys convinced me to slog through it lol. I just hope the pace for S2 picks up just a touch.

that's a surprisingly high score, considering the director (he did to All Quiet On The Western Front, but i haven't gotten around to watching it) and the writer, who wrote The Men Who Stare At Goats and Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. I take it that Ralph Fiennes carries the show ... ?

Trap - 5/10 - streaming on HBO

My least favorite M Night movie. This stars his real life daughter, Saleka, as a pop superstar whose concert is attended to by a serial killer as a manhunt is going on to find them.

Josh Hartnett stars who gives an amazing performance. M Night got the best outta him with great facial features, great mannerisms, great physical performance.

Was this a concert film to just promote his daughters singing career?

The M Night cameo was just meh as well.

Yeah, it really is pretty good and if you sit down and take couple minutes to think about what a trainwreck that would do to your mind.

Civil War - 6/10 (now streaming on HBO)

Boy did the press really hype this movie up and it didn't deliver.

I expected something more but was let down with the milquetoast plot, characters who were blase, and lazy writing and shitty acting. So many visuals were borrowed from stronger films which just reminded me of how lazy the film-makers were.

Alien: Romulus (2024)

I think the biggest mistake made with this film is that the characters aren't really fleshed out at all (with the exception of the main character and her android 'brother', and even then a bare minimum), the plot needed a bunch of desperate humans fleeing a situation like rats leaving a sinking ship and so that's how the screenplay served up the characters, like watching rats IMO. The only character I felt much sympathy for was the android. Even the no-name colonists that get hijacked in Alien Resurrection inspire more sympathy than the rest of the human characters in this film, and I freaking hate Alien Resurrection!

I really could have done with zero callbacks to better Alien movies.

There were some interesting action scenes. Overall It was OK but ultimately very forgettable. Despite Alien3's flaws I'd happily watch that again instead of this, largely because they fleshed out the characters before putting them in the meat grinder.

The plot doesn't make much sense IMO if you think about it "too much":
The humans on the planet's surface can scan the SPACE STATION and confirm there are cryo units aboard, but somehow missed the fact that it's obviously not just a ship but a space station.

Also, why was there essentially a production line of facehuggers? Ignoring the apparent lack of an alien queen to make the facehuggers (let's say the humans killed her after she laid lots of eggs, then they hatched those eggs and happily herded the facehuggers into cryogenic stasis... mkay), there's simply no explanation for why they were there, aside from their purpose of very ineffectually taking down the human characters starring in this film.

Compound V - or whatever the hell it was called - our Ash lookalike is determined to ensure that it gets back to the company safely, and yet the compound obviously doesn't work for the use he described. The evidence was right there in the lab. Let's save it anyway! Mkay. Also, it's super-important! Meh, let's not check up on the experiments going on in our multi-trillion dollar lab, let's wait for some random humans to find it. What could go wrong?

I think what I would have done with the plot is to flesh out the characters on the planet, then crash-land the space station onto the planet and xenomorphic chaos ensues. By the time the humans realise what's happening some decent character development could have happened, and maybe the audience can experience a bit of schadenfreude by having company guys get taken out first, then the real misery kicks in as a bunch of slaves succumb to the alien infestation while the company covers it up.

i dunno, i guess i was just starved for anything Alien which is why i liked it.

I watched again Starship Troopers: Come For The Boobies, Stay For The Fascism. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120201/reference/

Nazi Neil Patrick Harris is a hoot. Dina Meyer and Denise Richards punch it out for who's the hottest, and the casting is brilliant. Aside from the horrific dystopia of the setting, the actual shooty-shooty bangbang isn't bad either, the photography is horrible and the costumes are meh, but the action never lets up.
Great film, regardless of what you read into it.

SEE ?!!

i haven't been watching ... or doing .. much of anything these days. Old Family Guy episodes (it used to be really good), Married With Children, a handful of anime you probably never heard of (The Big O, Dirty Pair), and i may watch Cowboy Bebop again.

Scanners (1981) - 8.5/10 - (Now streaming on TCM/HBOMax)

Not sure how I managed to avoid this film but glad I finally sat down and watched this one with Cronenberg at his best doing the Writer/Director thing.

Michale Ironside is a force in this movie, plays the villain Revok superbly. The good Dr. Ruth played by Patrick McGoohan was excellent in give the audience the back-story on Scanners.

For being 45 yrs old, the movie holds up and so many twists and turns in a brisk 95 minute run time. Great SciFi with a bit of horror thrown in.

Really fun thriller. Paced well, good acting, Ewan McGregor was great. And the ending was a nice change of pace. Definitely recommended

i had my balls Dragged Across Concrete - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6491178/reference/

for those who do not know, this is sort of a high-class B-movie starring Mel Gibson, and then vomiting on it by also starring Vince Vaughn. It's directed by the guy who directed Bone Tomahawk, so it shouldn't be completely incompetent; and where Bone Tomahawk really overdid it on the violence, DAC overdoes it by SLOW. Jesus half the film is Gibson and Vaughn in a car, sitting and waiting.
Two police officers are suspended (without pay) following a slightly-too-rough drug bust that got caught on mobile and went viral. They find themselves out of money and decide to turn to crime, acting on a tip that there is going to be a serious robbery, they plan to kill the robbers and steal the loot.
On the other side is Thomas Kretchmann as Vogelman, an unusually cruel and violent criminal, strongly reminiscent of the "bank heist" Joker of The Dark Knight.

The film has a very high level of violence (not unusual for this director), but it also has HUGE amounts of slow scenes where nothing happens for 99% of the scene. Mel Gibson actually delivers a good performance throughout, Vaughn sucks as always. The supporting cast does a good job and the action tends towards realism over style. Photography was shit.

Overall, not the worst film i've seen. The quasi-documentary approach to realism doesn't really do the film many favours, and while it does have some strengths, i wouldn't really recommend it.
My vote: 5.5/10
