AMD buying Intel? It’s on the table

According to a new report, the U.S. government is encouraging Intel to consider a merger, potentially with rival AMD.

I had brought up this possibility a few months back, but it looks like the government is actually encouraging this now....

I wonder how this would affect people who bash one or the other, if they are combined?

And should the new company be called Intel AMD, AMD Intel, AMDtel, or ??

Does AMD get something they need from Intel? AMD could produce their chips at Intel but owning a fab ain't necessarily. That merge would probably destroy both of those companies.

Yeah, I'd rather see AMD swallow ARM or Qualcomm..... but evidently this is what is being pushed now.

I wonder if us.gov is concerned about Intel getting bought by foreign elements that don't align with US interests.

First Harambe, now Peanut the squirrel. This simulation is going to get increasingly whackier. Simulation - Intel and AMD become one fabless company. IFS goes to TSMC. TSMC moves headquarters to U.S. Taxpayer money fills any gaps in operational costs, pay and benefits differences. /simulation

I think that if 18A falls flat, this will become the case. If it just falls short, I am not sure.

How about "Advanced Intel Devices" AID?

I hadn't considered that. Yes, that is probably why they want it to be purchased by AMD. Can you imagine if some Chinese company swallowed Intel up?

If the fabs were up to it, this would give AMD a potential huge advantage over NVidia. I don't think that is the case though.

Having a fab nearly sunk AMD. Better to sell them off IMO. Besides -

Private equity firms own 49% of some of Intel's fabrication plants, including:

Fab 34 in Ireland
In June 2024, Intel sold a 49% stake in its Fab 34 chip manufacturing facility in Leixlip, Ireland to Apollo Global Management for $11 billion. Intel retains a 51% controlling interest and full operational control of the facility.

Ocotillo campus in Arizona
In 2022, Intel sold a 49% stake in its Ocotillo campus in Chandler, Arizona to Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LLC for about $15 billion. Intel retained majority ownership and operational control of the facilities.

Intel has used private equity to help fund the expansion of its chip foundry facilities. The cash infusion from these deals allows Intel to deploy capital elsewhere while continuing to build out the facilities.

According to the article, the merger would only be the design side which means that Intel would become an independent foundry only.

AMD should refuse any offer, that would be filling their still fragile boat with loads
of dead weight, they already have what is necessary to be competitive.

Best is to let Intel restructure themselves with some drastic downsizing that would put their revenue/employees ratio more in line with what is the norm elsewhere, wich would mean 70-80k employees for 55bn.

In that case AMD would likely only want to get the E-core team at best, if at all, and close/sell off everything else.

I'm really not sure what makes people think AMD would be a good fit for Intel's design side.

Going to need a citation on that one. The government forcing AMD to use Intel fabs seems slightly less likely than Lloyd getting with Mary in Dumb and Dumber.

True, but that was due to them falling behind too far. Having your own manufacturing capacity that is technologically competitive is a huge advantage. Would take years to switch and may never compete, but the dream is real.

If AMD-Intel deal exist, I believe the x86 license and some other patents related to PC/DC are what AMD wants though. But unfortunately neither combination nor acquisition between these two companies are likely happen cuz this would trigger monopoly investigation. IF, only if US goverment doing tricks, but this would be way off my imagination.
