Who has more to lose from immigration? Usually, lower income demographics. Yes, Trump is a POS and a racist, but the current administration hasn't done enough for them. Instead, people here are saying that "they just don't understand inflation" and "inflation is solved".

China makes a widget that costs $40. The USA can only make it for $80.
You put a tariff on the Chinese goods so they cost $80.
The US product is now competitive and you've propped up that domestic industry.
The downside is that the widget costs twice as much.
There's a place for tariffs in protecting domestic industries if those industries are important enough for the public to subsidize them, their purpose isn't to make things cheaper though.
It can help with manufacturing but you have to be really careful.
