It's all due to higher clocks. I'm not sure how you expected 65W with higher boost clocks. Can't say I am happy with the power draw. 65W would have been nicer.
The chips and cheese reviews are the ones I wait for the most. This is my replacement for tech heavy anandtech articles.Looks like the launch of the decade. So many reviews! https://videocardz.com/189651/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d-review-roundup
Even CnC got one on launch day!
AMD’s 9800X3D: 2nd Generation V-Cache
Following the first generation of V-Cache found in the Zen 3 and Zen 4 X3D SKUs, AMD is now following up with the second generation of V-Cache which is a major change for AMD in terms of packaging.…old.chipsandcheese.com
You can't have higher clocks without an increase in power. The lower clocks on the 7800X3D is why it sips power. If you could increase its clocks it would most likely have similar or higher power consumption than the 9800X3D.Can't say I am happy with the power draw. 65W would have been nicer.
Being 35% faster in games than 285K is surely going to cause some heartache.I don't think 8-10% is enough to cause a headache
9800X3D is rather about 15 percent faster than 7800X3D.I don't think 8-10% is enough to cause a headache
He said that was quick and dirty correct? More left in the tank...Der8auer delidded and did direct die cooling on his 9800X3D. He saw 52C at 5.225GHz all core in CB R23 at stock settings. 64C at 5.6GHz all core (165W)!
Unfortunately not. What I hope we will see is no reduction in frequencies compared to the non X3D part.So do these results really open up the possibility of v-cache on both CCDs of the 9950X3D?
The latency is more than compensated for by the increased cache. Note that the 9800X3D scored higher in SPEC 2017 than the 9950X despite a large clock difference of 500 mhz. Production workloads are seeing an improvement as well based on the reviews I've seen.Gotta say I'm surprised at the boost. That's a big jump, gives me high hopes for a 9950X3D. I expect it to be slower because of the latency and potential core parking, but it sure looks like the best of both worlds...
TPU's results seem a little low comparing to other outlets. Certain games like Hogwarts Legacy have no CPU dependance (and higher framerates) whereas other places show the L3 making a big difference. Interesting how the scene can change the outcome of a review.

I know they increased TDP from 65W->120W so they can increase clocks, but I question If It was really worth It.You can't have higher clocks without an increase in power. the 7800X3D has a 120W TDP.I know they increased TDP from 65W->120W so they can increase clocks, but I question If It was really worth It.
Both the 7800X3D and 9800X3D are 120W parts.I know they increased TDP from 65W->120W so they can increase clocks, but I question If It was really worth It.
Yeah just added 400MHz was all he did. So no real tinkering at all with it.He said that was quick and dirty correct? More left in the tank...
You will be agreeing with MLID soon.Arrow looks like Bulldozer by comparison.
Spot on!Anyone seen MS Flight Sim numbers yet? That should be ugly as well.
I like that chart. Really cool way of showing min (or 1% lows or whatever the lower bound is), the max (or 1% highs I guess) as well as the average and the area where the bulk of the frame rate is.Spot on!

Deliberately chose 4K
Hey, I think he is a good interviewer as I've written about before. His nontent as @Joe NYC dubs it, needs to go away. He needs to just have guests on and discuss the industry. I'd like, subscribe, and comment for the almighty algorithm if he changed to that format. You will be agreeing with MLID soon.
His take is that Meteor was Bulldozer and Arrow is Piledriver, better for sure but still miles away from the competition.

DF has the flight sim results and oh boy! - https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2024-amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d-review?page=3
LOL igor beat me this time.
