I'm a bit pissed miffed at this deal as just two weeks ago I bought the Ancestry + Health service for $179 (got $20 off regular price of $199). Would have saved $100!! If you buy through Amazon, currently same pricing, you can qualify for free shipping whereas 23andMe website has a shipping charge.

Ancestry (basic) Service - $69 (regular $99)
Ancestry + Health - $79 (regular $199)
Ancestry + Health Premium - $99 (regular $258)

There is another promo, you can get 2 Ancestry (basic) kits for $99 total (limit 4), if you input your email address when prompted to sign up (not actually register for account) for promotion mailings. This offer should pop up when you visit the website, or perhaps it is when you move to leave the website. Ends 11/25

They're all doing it man. One of them (Family Tree DNA), even furnishes data to any law enforcement request, no warrant or subpoena required, probably others who don't disclose it. I can opt to or request they delete everything they have including to destroy any material they have banked.

What could they possibly do with my DNA??? Clone it to create the perfect time wasting machine? Their loss!

Think about how much worse Google's ads would be if they targeted towards your genetic data.

My point, and it seems to be missed above, is that if this company goes bankrupt and someone buys their "assets," then you'll have less control over that data.

Nope. Not missed but I don't think most people would care, unless they had misdeeds they wanted to keep hidden, e.g.

offsprings from acts of incest, having genetic markers consistent with tiny penises, related to celebrities, being celebs themselves, having genetic markers that in future identify them as vampires or werewolves etc.

One consideration to have with genetic testing and health: many states do not protect against genetic discrimination for life, disability, and long-term care insurance, and federal law (GINA) only protects people for health insurance and employment. I would say if you are interested in genetic testing for health reasons that you speak first to a genetic counselor and consider potential financial implications.

They can screen for breast cancer now via genetic testing which is a good thing but like said above. That crap can be used against you.

I think the default mode for any reasonably sane person would be to protect your personal privacy/information as much as possible when you can. We certainly can't protect it all, or even a majority of it and it is certainly true that the trend for the past couple of hundred years is for increased collection of such data. It is also true that trend is rapidly increasing so protecting your identity is like swimming against the tide.

But once the info is released/disclosed you have no control over it anymore for the most part.

I can see getting such a test if you have real medical reasons to do so-there at least you have the protection of HIPA-but to give such info away is a bad decision. Take the hundred bucks and spend it on something frivolous instead.

They could sell it to an insurance company which might deny a claim because of a genetic marker for a disability or illness.
They don't even have to sell the data for it to be problematic for the insurance categories that are allowed to discriminate based on known genetic criteria. When you're applying, you're generally attesting that you don't have any known conditions. If they find out later that you did know via a pre-insurance test, you could face a retroactive insurance denial if you ever needed to use it.

Generally, if you do want to go down the genetic testing route, you'll want to secure your life, disability, and long-term care insurances prior to the testing. If the testing comes back negative, you can always cancel those products if you don't want to carry them beyond some base level.

I would agree, except the basic plans for multiple companies doesn't give you any of this information. The data an insurance company could buy has information that your 'basic' plan wouldn't tell you. One of the issues 23andme has is that they marked these features as premium and solve very few of the premium plans. Most people appear to have just wanted geniology in a pretty family tree format.

ie, 23andme could see the data to someone else for pennies on the dollar vs the premium you would have to pay (and probaby didn't pay) to get.

Yes, there are definitely tons of issues with data privacy and whatnot with these DTC testing platforms. Much more so than using a specific gene testing company ordered through a medical provider. (But even the latter are still recommended to undergo genetic counseling, unless the testing is doing something specific, like looking for a specific mutation if you have cancer).
