Hi all, I have been running a Ryzen 3600 in this mobo for several years with no issues and decided to update to a 5700x3d. I realized after installing the 7700x3d that the BIOS version was too old and I needed to reinstall the 3600 to update the BIOS.

So I reinstalled the BIOS and tried to upgrade from 1404 to 5020. However I stupidly didnt install the CPU cooler as I figured I can quickly update the BIOS and put the 5700x3d back in. During the update, the computer froze and/or crashed and now I cannot update any more.

When I try to turn on the computer without a USB Drive in the system, I get this error: WARNING: BIOS Recovery Mode has been detected Please put the file "TGX570PW.CAP" into HDD or a removable USB media device, And then reset your computer You can also insert ASUS Support CD to your CD-ROM and reset your computer, If you have done these, Please wait a moment and don't shutdown system System will be automatically rebooted

I also get a red light indicating CPU error.

When I put the USB drive into the system, nothing happens and I get a white light indicating Video card Issue.

I have no idea what to do now? is my 3600 and or mobo fried?

I have this board in one of my builds, it's been a tank and runs a 5800X3D now. But it does not have bios flashback, where you can update the board without the CPU, GPU, or ram installed. Leaving the cooler off was definitely bad juju. However, your system shutdown before completing the update to keep the CPU from frying. If it did fry the CPU or the board were bricked, it would not be giving you recovery directions.

Since you are getting this screen

Here are the directions from someone that successfully recovered the flash on reddit -

  1. Use Disk Management to create a 1GB FAT32 partiton on a USB key (unsure if limiting the size is needed; I'd just heard rumblings of some 2GB limit)
  2. *This part is my advice as the original was specific to their situation at the time* Use the original 1404 BIOS. Since your bios is ancient, try an intermediary like 3602 before flashing 5020. Trying to go from a 5yr old bios to the latest is asking a lot. Even if there had not been a thermal protection shutdown involved. @blckgrffn had a board brick that way recently.
  3. Run the BIOS Renamer program to rename the BIOS to the file name they gave you.
  4. Put the renamed BIOS file on your flash drive
  5. Plug the flash drive in.
  6. Turn on PC (if computer was already on, turn it off/on or reset it)
  7. Upon power on/reset, system starts reading USB key. Within 20 seconds (for me), the BIOS "Press Del" screen shows up. Hit Delete (may not need to), it'll take you into the EZ Flash screen where it restores the BIOS

Woah woah woah there, 77003D?

Thats a 57003d, right?

You are getting way further than I did in recovering a board.

I also second the incremental approach, if possible.

Also, when I have done something like this in the past, it could take like minutes in darkness for it to do the thing with the USB drive. Like the man said, fat partition, 1GB or smaller is likely safest and just the one file it’s asking for and patience.

Good luck!

I've always wondered what the purpose of this was!
I've always managed to flash the bios 'as is' without renaming anything.
And if it needs a specific name why don't they just name it that in the first place?
AND, can I not right click and rename it like any other file?

I think he only has to rename it for recovery purposes. With this board, every time I updated the bios, I unpacked the zip to the FAT32 USB drive, no partitioning, and ran the flash utility.

I have used so many AM4 boards, I keep thinking there were a few that need the renaming. For flashback maybe? It all blurs together after a while.

Just seems excessive to have an .exe just to rename a file when windows has been able to do that forever and if you aren't using windows then the .exe won't work anyway!

I agree with what was said earlier though. Sounds more like a bad flash than anything terminal!

You want to have a USB 2.0 flash drive for your bios updates. Those boot every time. USB 3.0 can be iffy. That board is still recoverable. You just need to wipe your flash drive and load only the bios file requested.

In his case, it ended up the equivalent of turning off the PC when the warning tells you do not turn off your PC during the update process. Good to know it can give you a shot at recovery after that dreaded scenario plays out.

The software stuff is over my pay grade. I do as instructed and follow all of the incantations precisely so I don't summon the wrong daemon. 👹

You have to have the right magic usb stick that you only use for bios flashing and is kept in a special box in your computer desk as well!

You laugh but I have a 1GB lexar from like 2004 my then gf and now wife paid like $120 for as a Christmas gift, back when USB2 was the new hotness, and it’s what I use for this stuff. It’s read and write is better and more consistent than many cheap USB3 drives I’ve used since. But anyway. It’s in a box that I keep for PC builds and troubleshooting

I mean I said it because I do have a special usb stick just for doing bios flashing and I keep it in a special drawer in my computer desk! 😆

Thanks!!!!!!!!!! this actually worked, flashed back to 1404 - after a dark screen for a minute or two. So happy
Currently flashing 2407 and then 3001, 4000 and then finally 5000. lol

3600 doesnt seem to be fried either so next up I will install the 5700x3d
