Please post about all things 9000X3D series performance related (once released) here. Benchmarks, availability, etc.

The 9800X3D is the first to hit the shelves. Let's bring that discussion from the speculation thread here to kick it off.

Some of the reviews I've seen or read with a decent mix of game genres between them -

Starting with HUB's new versus 7800X3D vid they just uploaded.

I was surprised by the 9800x3d's power usage being higher than the 7800x3d when other 9000 series CPUs seemed to use less power than their 7000 series counterparts.

That's because regular 9000 series is power capped hard at stock. AMD did allow 105W mode which is covered by warranty, but this needs to be manually enabled in the BIOS and is not regarded as "stock" setting.

It's the only one that pushed clock rates (base) much higher than its predecessor.

That's a pretty meaningless observation given that my 7800X3D just now was experiencing <1% CPU usage and yet one logical core was going at ~4.7GHz.

"caped"? I presumed you meant to type "capped" but that doesn't make much sense given my initial response.

Yeah, it was a typo. 9800X3D is also boosting higher so that explains the lower perf./watt versus 7800X3D. I don't really mind the increased power draw as the chip is a brutal performer.

Easier to keep cool too. One need only look at GN's gaming efficiency charts to see that 3D CPUs lead the way. Not interested in any guff about productivity either. This CPU is for enthusiast gamers, not users with a serious workflow. It does a great job at those for what it is, and is often a big boost over previous 3Ds for those tasks.

8% increase over 7800X3D when testing across 45 games, that's more inline with what I expected, not 11%. Still decent after how bad Zen 5 regular CPU were for gaming compared to Zen 4.

Aussie Steve himself narrows it down from 45 to the most representative titles that aren't GPU-capped and more likely to represent the future of CPU-demanding titles and the gap grows to +11%. I suspect a RTX 5090 or 5090 Ti will only show more difference, not less.

If you have a 7800X3D probably not enough to entice an upgrade, but for anything else it has some whopping margins over the competition, including AMD's own 5800X3D.

The problem is the 7800X3D has the easiest upgrade path, you can keep existing MB/memory. But that one makes the least sense to upgrade.

I will keep beating my drum; geomean can suck it. There are a good number of games with double digits up to 20% improvement. Some of these gaps will widen with the 5090. The most important thing it did for AMD, is it took games that performed best on Intel and erased the advantage. Spiderman and Starfield were fastest on raptor previously.

Elaborate please. Both use the same boards and ram, so where are you going with this? This IS the upgrade.

I mean the performance improvement is small enough to make you think twice if it's worth it. For older stuff it's a much bigger difference but you have to upgrade everything.

I assume that's because the 7800x3d would cook itself if you put the same amount of power through it as a 9800x3d. Why would you not let the 9800x3d use that power if it can? It's a desktop chip so battery life doesn't come into it and the chip seems to stay pretty cool.

This is true. But I feel I can't complain about the value and use I got out of my AM4 set up! Hell my brain is still telling me I don't actually need to!

Counterpoints:

Many of us can sell our 7800X3D right now for more than we paid for it. Making a profit off of a CPU you have used is not the norm. Some will leverage that to make the 9800X3D a downright bargain for final out of pocket, as they were effectively paid to use their present CPU.

The upgrade everything point is almost comical. For starters: Long time AM4 users say hi! Zen 3 3D is the best bang for buck upgrade for those on the platform. It isn't primarily AMD users that are eager to upgrade to this CPU, it's Intel users jumping ship because they got burned with raptor or are on an aging platform and arrow sucks. Which is why the comment made me chuckles; no one understands the necessity of upgrading everything more than Intel users.

You don't, but the resale on the 5800X3D is damned good at the moment. Every review has tons of comments and likes pointing out the 5800X3D is GOAT because of how well it does in the tests. Wait too long and the value will start to drop. I am keeping my 3 AM4 3D. But I may sell my 7800X3D as I can make a damned healthy profit to put towards the 9800X3D. Making it effectively $325 or so out of pocket.

If I do upgrade I'll end up giving the 5800x3d a nice retirement and my wife will get an office box with some serious gaming chops!

Perhaps the biggest factor in why retail can't keep up with demand on Zen 5 3D CPUs, with the 7800X3D having repeatedly gone OOS the last couple of months, is allocations not production. My guess is gaming focused S.I.s are ordering way more Ryzen 3D than ever. https://www.ibuypower.com/gaming-pcs/amd-desktops/ryzen-9000-series/ryzen7-9800x3d

OEMs outside of Dell seems logical based on AMD share capture. S.I.s that build game servers too. Intel brought nothing new, and raptor is cursed and bit far too many already. / guessing game

Good, then I won't feel alone anymore. My wife's daily driver is a 5800X3D and ARC A750. I have another one and a 5600X3D system, as backups already. At least it is getting used.

My solution is to skip the rat race this time.

I try to avoid platform upgrades not for the money but the effort it takes to set up everything. A straight CPU upgrade is much quicker and simpler to do. I spent $400 on mine and they seem to go for $300 or so, so $180 for the upgrade is decent. I'll get it at some point but it's more of a nice to have, not essential.

I am tempted to upgrade come January or so, I'll see how the higher core count 3D chips do. I can always sell my AM4 combo. Not sure if I would keep the 5900X or the 5800X3D. If I can get more for the 5900X, or even about the same, I would rather sell it and use the 5800X3D in the Quakecon/LAN party rig.

The 5800X3D kit should be easier to sell, but harder to replace. Keep that one.

I did not know Tom's has a YT channel now. Makes sense as printed reviews are for old people that can sit still and read for 10 minutes. Production values and camera are worse than a teen in their bedroom. We don't need homie's ugly mug that close up either.

He is another reviewer inexplicably (not really, most of us know why) still using a raptor test platform being forced to upgrade to AM5.

Jeff did a review using a 4070 tie super. And people complain about Intel and AMD naming schemes. Interesting
