Question Looking to build another gaming rig for my son, here's mine from last year - get same thing or better stuff now?

Hi All,

First off thanks to everyone for answering questions and helping me put together a gaming rig back in 2023, it runs like a champ! This is what I went with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hcwvBj

At the time I handed down my previous system to my son, but it's showing its age and struggling with some newer stuff. I'm looking to build about the same thing for him in terms of price and performance. This is primarily for 1440p gaming, have a 32" 165hz display so would like a framerate around that. Don't have to be ultra settings, but high definitely. We're mainly playing Satisfactory together, but he also wishlisted Starfield. Is the above system still the go-to a year later or are there better options? NVIDIA/Intel only.

Just need the box and I'm fine with just re-ordering the above parts, but wanted to see if anything changed in the past year or so. TIA!

QA:

Gaming
1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

2-2.5k 2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

USA 3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
We can't be expected to scour the internet on your behalf, chasing down deals in your specific country... Again, help us, help YOU.

Intel/NVIDIA 5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

Looking to build the box, have everything else 6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

No OC unless it's a 'freebie'. 7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

1440p 8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?

Order all parts by mid-Dec 9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.

Have all software 10. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?

The only thing I can suggest is AMD this go around. Microcenter has some price cuts ~20% on the latest 9000 series CPUs already.

I built my 7900X last year and the 9900X is $10 more than current pricing. $20 cheaper than last year even though the 7900X was already over a year old.

12/24 cores and slightly lower power on the 9900x. All P cores vs the Intel hybrid.

The other option is to wait longer as there's new Intel Battlemage GPU coming soon and AMD X3D versions coming but, it looks like the 9800x3d is out but trending at $700 which is absurd.

If you must buy high-end Intel, Alder Lake is believed to be reliable (unlike Raptor Lake i7/i9).

And a bit cheaper than your SKU too:

Best deals will be at the end of this month for Black Friday. For the PSU, ATX 3.1 is rolling out now and should match well with GeForce 4070+ power requirements.
Based on your last PCPartPicker build's estimated power draw, I'd size up the PSU.
For SSD, the newer 990 Pro is good (so is WD SN850x or Crucial T500).

Thanks, yes I'm posting this in advance of BF sales just so I'm ready when they drop. Guess I'll keep an eye out then.

So the recommendation is still the same system then?
Not from me. You could get a 13th gen CPU with the degradation issue (some batches were affected. Intel isn't recalling anything). So you could potentially face unexplained crashes and then waste time troubleshooting.

If you want to stick to Intel, my recommendation is Core Ultra 265K and ASROCK Z890 Livemixer. Regarding RAM, better to go with something above DDR5-7000 and 48GB kit would be better. Rest of the parts you can choose whatever.

Didn't Intel release a microcode update via the board's bios a few months back?

Well, if anyone wants to trust Intel despite their lies since Jan-2024 (denying RMAs even for customers with over a thousand CPUs and refusing to admit that there was a degradation issue until the problem ballooned into a mushroom cloud), sure, they can take their chances.

If cost is an issue, I would rather go with 12700K.
