"Alone In Berlin"

The movie -- "Alone In Berlin" -- is apparently based on Gestapo files reviewed by the film's creators or contributors. You can scroll to "Storyline", but it essentially chronicles the parents of a German soldier and war fatality. They begin handwriting 3x5 cards critical of Hitler's regime, and placing them in public locations to be picked up by other random citizens. They eventually get caught, get tortured and get executed by guillotine.

Here is a news item from the LA TIMES, about a high-school teacher in Moreno Valley, CA, who made a rant out of his classroom presentation to warn students about the Trump election-win. Some student took a cell-phone audio [corrected: not video] and either the student or his parents (likely) posted it on "X" -- not exactly under the radar.

The school district is currently protecting the teacher's identity. He apparently had the support of 1,200 signatories to a petition on Change.org.

This morning, I noted the morning news report that Trump is purging the Pentagon and the military of "woke" employees or officers. There's going to be a fight, but the panty-waist GOP in Congress and and the Senate aren't going to resist. They are taking this purge to the service academies. How can they dismiss cadets for having an opinion or voicing it?

I want to create a bumper sticker. It could say "RESIST" or it could say "RESIST and OVERTHROW". Next thing you know, vandals will work KristalNacht on my car, or I'll be stopped by some . . . federal police . . . . and waltzed off in handcuffs.

When is "enough" -- enough? I've offered friends the multitude of unopened 3x5 card packages left by my departed Moms from her years of STAPLES purchases. If you pursue the activity with the cards, best to keep businesses like grocery stores out of the equation. Litter the sidewalks or deposit in public spaces.

Of course, you'd go out of your way to say the same thing about parents who have had books banned out of their school curriculum and public libraries, or right wing political bosses requiring public schools to prominently display the 10 Commandments, or public school teachers sermonizing God's teachings from behind their desks, yes?

Knock yourself out. I've always been a big supporter of the 1st Amendment and free political speech. Who is it that wants to shut down speech they get to designate as "hate speech" again ? Oh yeah right, it's the leftists.

I'm surprised this thread continued like a ball of yarn rolling down a steep incline.

Actually, I have some misgivings about using the classroom in the way the teacher did. On the other hand, I remember when I was in a Catholic high-school, and the good Holy Ghost Fathers never went out of their way to support the Civil Rights movement. Then again, I remember the assassination of Archbishop Romero in El Salvador after he had preached against the transgressions of the fascists and criminals there -- more or less terrorizing the population.

I for one would like to see IRS get tough with churches of any sort, but more likely those evangelicals who seem most dismissive of the rules, in revoking their tax-free status for using the pulpit as a campaign tool. Those rules were put there for a reason. But those people are using their Sunday committees to organize politically. I don't approve.

And considering the remarks of imported_tajmahal, Free Speech is great in principle, but there are actual, tangible costs to the deliberate promulgation of Lies. I simply observe that is such.

Parents of some political hue are going to complain about the high-school teacher. His rant was not the way. What I might do is to schedule a discussion in the class, kick-started and fed by teacher questions.

What chills me just as much is the reactions I've had recently from local Trump supporters to conversations I've had -- not specifically intended for them, but for instance in a restaurant that looked empty, and I without my hearing aids still afflicted with my loud voice. They act as though you shouldn't say anything now that the election has been decided, and you shouldn't say anything they don't want to hear..

In other similar circumstances -- and I admit this seems paranoid -- I've suspected those people of taking down my vehicle license number, finding my address through a DMV query, and breaking windows of cars parked on either side of my building.

Whether it's the goose or the gander, this is the only forum in which I've been much able to sound off since 2016. All that time, I've had to listen to the narcissist and his rants for the 8 years when I turn on the news. But these supporters of his get upset when they hear you in a restaurant.

I'm fine with history teachers tying lessons of the past to modern events. In this case, there is strong correlation between the fascist movements of the 20th century and the modern Republican party.

I'm fine with a teacher pointing out issues with the Democratic party as they relate to past events in our own and other countries, just as I'm fine with it regarding the Republican party. If a teacher is going to point out support for a specific candidate, they better couch that real strong with 'this is my opinion and I feel like ranting, throw on some earbuds if you don't want to hear me talk for a few', no matter what candidate they talk about.

We're human, rants are expected sometimes, even in semi-professional environments. It needs to be reasonable, and again, couched with the information that puts it in context.
