Look at how expensive just Strix Point is.

Case in point - Golden Pig said like a week or two ago predicting that Blackwell gaming laptops are going to be basically Raptor Lake based... and maybe Phoenix/Hawk or perhaps even older. I see no reason to think he's wrong on that with the CPU price being an issue.

AMD is even rebranding Hawk into Ryzen 200 series:

AI Hype has given AMD an opening but it's tough to say how big of a market this is. I wouldn't expect to see much of Strix Halo being marketed for gaming. For AMD+AMD I would expect Hawk+RDNA4 if AMD can manage to get some deals this time.

ARL being sub-par at video games, MTL-H not being any better, which leaves RPL-H as their only real option on a "power doesn't matter" product. AMD might as well be an afterthought at the top end with their volumes.

With the gaming handhelds out there pushing the performance/power envelope, I would think that AMD would have some HWK thin-n-light and 2in1 design wins on shelves, or even binned STX in a few. It may look Poverty SKU level, but, it's well into 2050 territory with FSR et al.

Fire range would be the better option for the highest end. Something with vcache. Why can't they scale up production for the top end laptop orders. Just the 5090 ones?

Sooo ... Have we heard anything more about the rumored Zen5LP cores in strix halo (on the SOC die, not on the CCD). I'm kind of curious if they will increase battery life in light loads a lot compared to strix point.

I would think they would be more for idle power savings, but we'll see.

I have a request for anyone with a 9950X. Can you run CB R23 MT and report the frequency, power, and max temp shown in HWinfo during the run for stock settings? Also the score? Also the cooling you are using. Looking at building a rig and want to know what to expect.

MB stock settings all AUTO apart from memory which is on A-Die profile, but nothing crazy.
Watercooled with a Corsair XC7 block and 480mm + 360mm rads (makes no difference to CPU temps compared to standard AIO 240mm at these settings).

…or to a decent tower-type air cooler?

(I can't say myself for sure. While I do use air coolers on several CPUs with similar or even higher wattage, and with rather low fan speeds while temperatures are lower than these, my clock speeds are also lower than these, by quite a bit.)

I know this is Zen 5 thread, but Hardware Canucks did a nice comparison of a couple of Zen4 CPUs with different types of coolers shortly after Zen 4 was released. They found that there is a little but of a difference in temps and as a result, max frequency, but it's not quite as big as many suspected. There are time stamps in the description if you want to just skip to the charts.

I think so. I've used tower cooler on 5950X pushing 200W and swap to water helped on long duration tests, but quick Cinebench run is not able to heat soak decent air cooler.

Where my WC setup makes huge difference is with GPU temps and pushing CPU above 250W.

Fantastic! Thank you.

Finally an apples-to-apples comparison with my 14900K, also all auto except for XMP I for my DDR4 memory.
Okay here we go.
I assume you set power limit at 200W? That's what my 14900K is set at also we have the same power.

Looks like the 9950X is running 8 cores at 5GHz and 8 at 4.65GHz for an average clock of 4.825GHz. Do you know why the 9950X runs some cores higher and some lower? Seems like efficiency would be better if all cores were run at the same frequency, right?

Anyway, my 14900K runs CB R23 MT at 4.6GHz for the P's and 3.9GHz for the E's at 200W package power.

My temps on Assassin air is 83C max package. Yours with much better cooler is 72C.
What temp do you think my Assassin would do at 200W with the 9950X?

Scores, 35k for the 14900K and 42k for the 9950X, both at 200W.

So there you have it. At the same "real world" power number of 200W (around where I think most people run these parts) the 9950X is about 20% more performant than the 14900K. I write "about" because different samples (bins) will perform differently, but I think this is a good comparision we have here. Stock-for-stock at 200W.

I bet the 9950X would score 35k on 125-150W.

The 14900K only gets ridiculous with power when you push it over 5GHz on the P's.

It is normal to have that much frequency difference between CCD's?
My sample is scoring well, but it has large spread between CCDs.

Lower clocks on 2nd CCD are normal, all dual CCD Ryzen CPUs behave like this as one CCD is picked for max. freq. and the other for power efficiency.

Obviously, with Core Optimizer at -30 for CCD2 and PBO bumped to 220W 2nd CCD maintains 5GHz in Cinebench with ease.

As for cooling, this CPU runs cooler than my 7800X3D ran and definitely cooler than 5950X when set to 200W.

Thanks for the information and running the test. Great CPU, no doubt about.

Only in this one benchmark. Granted, it shouldn't be surprising that Granite Ridge is doing better at the same power level, given that it's a much newer core/uarch.

I decided to do a quick run at static 5GHz 1.1V setting, all else equal to my last run. This is by no means the lowest Vcore I can use, just one I picked up looking at auto PBO voltages.

Nice score increase in multicore and much lower load power at the same time, I like. ASUS allows me to set profiles with boost still active, might play with that later
