but soon desktops won't be a thing, the world has changed a lot. phones, laptops, handhelds, cloud, AI.

it's a natural course.
Don't think it's just desktops, but all PCs(mostly windows based). Many popular apps are only in full format on Smartphones already. Laptops are just as "useless" too.

The recent Intel news further cement this.

For me the AT main site really started degrading after Anand Lai Shimpi left. It wasn't same with Ryan Smith.

Some options not yet mentioned in no particular order:

overclockers.com - Used to be a premier enthusiast site but nearly died after the founder left and the tech world changed over time. Main site still limps along and the forum has a small but dedicated bunch maintaining it.
overclockers.co.uk - Very active forum, not the strictest moderation. Site is part of a computer parts store in the U.K. so I imagine it will be around as long as DiY computers are a thing.
linustechtips.com - Very active forum. Not exactly my type of crowd and I'll leave it at that.
realworldtech.com - Very technically heavy discussions. I don't visit too often just because the forum format is horrendous (IMO).
reddit.com - Uhhh, that's all.
There is Extreme Hardware

extremehw.net is where Enterprise went after OCN. XHW I think is the acronym.
There is also overclockers.com forums. OCF. They had 3 users purchase the site. Earthdog, ATMINSIDE and I.O.M.G still active.
Just to give more info.

I've been to other forums too, but Anandtech has the highest quality members. They just understand tech stuff more. Techpowerup and Tomshardware have people that are at least a level or less compared to here.

Too bad Anandtech, Beyond3D, Realworldtech and other real in-depth sites are fading into oblivion, and you have useless 50/50 rumor sites like MLID, Adored gaining massive traction. Not to mention the endless video sites.

Video is also a much slower and annoying way to convey information, because a page allows you to scroll to exactly where you want at the speed of your mouse, while video you have to watch at least few seconds for it. I know many people that are doing two demanding things on the background while they are "watching" videos. That's how society is going.

It is a sad day indeed. I was reading Anandtech and Toms Hardware from late 90's. My daily dose of tech news. Gone are the days whatever new things you purchase gets obsolete within 6 months. All good things comes to an end.
Early on my impression was that these tech sites are just enthusiast doing tech reviews. Profit is just a secondary thing. Charlie of SA was first to throw the towel, others followed one by one.

that thread has been the Eye of the Cyclone for lack of a specific term - when a specific space on the internet achieves some kind of critical mass and gains the attention of 'everyone'

big reason for that was leakers , then momentum / update frequency / drama

but in this case 'everyone' is insiders and editors from 50 other sites who distill the news into small articles, which then gain more attention as they are more easily discoverable on 2024 internet, unlike traditional forums

i.e. 4 mil views is nothing compared to a 50k subreddit where they get these numbers on the regular
you can imagine how many millions views a 500k subreddit gets, e.g. the AMD subreddit etc

100%, vast majority of remaining desktop enthusiasts are pc gamers, basically the main remaining use case for desktops
but even that part is already getting reduced to 4K+ gamers... I can play literally everything in 2K on my slim phoenix 4060 laptop
True, but desktops will still run cooler, can have more powerful hardware, and are repairable and upgradable. So I think there is still a place for them.

Oh man... The day I track down my lost Anand login, they shut down the place.

Thanks for all the overclocked DDR memories and X58 Forever bumperstickers!
My P6T Deluxe v2 is still running strong in my HTPC. Probably the best mobo I ever owned.

I had been posting every so often about the eventual demise of AT for close to 10 years by now. You could see it coming. Many did not want to believe it. I have my doubts that the forums will stay up that long. I would love for Future to prove me wrong.

I just saw this news and this is me

Joined up after Sharky Forums was closed.

MyDigitalLife forums do not seem bad, but they do not get the search engine hits like AT Forums does.

Hopefully Future keeps this around.
I've been thinking about this for a while. AT Forums is basically a text based module (with some occasional slides/pictures). The videos are mostly external links. This means the overall monthly traffic should be around a few terabytes only. 10? 20?

If thats the case, the monthly server charges shouldn't exceed a few hundred dollars (USD). And thats not a big amount. We users (whoever is willing) can share/pool the amount and pay the monthly bills, if the web hosting/server admin is willing.

This way, we can keep this forum alive for a very long time. Just a thought.

Since a bot just brought this thread back I have a question. Does anyone know how much longer this forum will be up?

If you saw the info @blckgrffn provided, probably until these forums stop producing far more income than they cost to run. Why kill a golden goose?

From what was said earlier (like renewed for 3 months), probably a month or so left. Maybe till the end of this year. Beyond that... :'(

Actually, it's kinda easy to renew the server hosting plan (it's cheap and even we users can do it), but only if the server admins are willing. Unfortunately, there isn't much communication from the top which is a very bad sign.
