I think the R1T is a good option for people who don't actually need to haul much on a regular basis. Which is most people buying trucks. Upside of the Ford is that unless you get close to it and know what to look for it just looks like a normal truck which is surely appealing to some.
Except that I've never heard anyone use the expression, "lovely as a pickup truck". It's sort of like "lovely as an airport." If one doesn't need a pickup, why not buy something that looks better?

The auto industry successfully sold people on ever larger and more expensive vehicles than they need. Americans now love trucks even if they have basically no actual use for one at all. For the kind of money people are spending one can get something really nice over at BMW and others instead.

The local Ford dealer is having its annual "Test drive any vehicle, get a free turkey" promotion. I screwed up and test drove an F150 Lightning Lariat. OMFG! I love that truck. Well appointed...nearly all the bells and whistles Ford offers on an F150, looks decent, Star white metallic tri-coat paint...nearly identical to my current 2019 F150 Lariat...but WOW! Instant acceleration...from a dead stop to 70 MPH in the blink of an eye...handles VERY well...better than my current truck, which handles like a large sports car. I choked at the nearly $85,000 price tag...but didn't say no. I'm thinking about it. They low-balled me a bit on the trade-in on my 2019...If I can get that up a ways...maybe. I dunno...it's a LOT of money.
I would not buy one without a promotion and rebates etc. don't get giddy search around a bit and see what you can find in a similar vehicle at a larger volume dealer and maybe ship it etc.

They offered me about $9000 in rebates/discounts…and 1.9% financing. Still, payment would be more than I’m comfortable with.

I looked around the Puget Sound region. Pricing is normal for what it is.

Big sells. Big with LCD screens, buzzers, whistles, and gadgets that have colored lights sell like coke at a whore house. The vast majority of "trucks" are SUV's with a little bed. It's what people want for reasons that I'll never understand. Even real work trucks have suffered. My came with car tires on it for a better ride. That didn't work out all that well with a lumber rack and tool boxes.
Yes, I'm ranting. Mostly because of all the grief I had trying to buy an actual work truck from a bunch of clowns that thought "work truck" meant rubber floor mats over the carpeting.

New auto depreciation sucks ass.

Cheaper used BEVs are coming in 2026.

As an aside, a MY2019 vehicle is about 6 years old. This is absolutely the worst possible time to get rid of it. For most people, it's been paid off (although auto loans are increasingly going to 84 months ROFL) so you own it free and clear. It's already experienced the worst part of its depreciation curve. I realize this is sunk cost, but if you bought it new, you've already lost some 50% of the purchase price. Sunk cost fallacy aside, this is still close to "lightly used" (what I would call your typical 3 year old off-lease vehicles), and with routine maintenance and some luck, these are the very best years to own the car or truck. You may have no repair costs, so it's just fuel, maintenance/tires, and modest depreciation (and insurance).

Trading it in for an $85k first-gen BEV sounds outrageously bad IMHO.

I'm one of those "financed for 84 months" dummies...but with 0% interest, it just lowers the payment and all of it goes to principal. I bought it brand-new in may 2020, so I've had it for ~54 months. I think it's about 60% paid off.

well yeah at 0% you can drag that out for however long you want and it doesn't matter. it's when people finance for 84 months to get a $150/mo payment buying a $5000 car or something like that, where the amount of interest greatly dwarfs the value of the car. (not including depreciation)

Or just people buying stupidly expensive cars at not 0% and constantly rolling debt over.

I'm one of those dummies that writes a check and is done with it. I could be making interest on that money during the time I own the new vehicle, but I hate monthly payments and having a lien. To be fair I already made interest of that money before I spent it. And I know that a new vehicle is a horrible investment, it's a want and not a necessity. As a percentage of my personal finances it's already over with, and I'm okay with that.

I've never seen a 0% 84 month loan offered, that's one hell of a deal. On my last car purchase I wandered in with an 800 credit score and 50% down, best I could was 2.5%. I ended up putting half on a credit card that offered 0% interest for the first year and paid that off before the year ran out.

Yeah, that’s the only reason I bought this truck…it’s like free money. Following the big pandemic shut down, Ford was hurting to start selling vehicles again. I saw a commercial on tv, went to the PC, submitted a credit application…was approved, bought the truck a couple of days later. (Had to make an appointment due to the pandemic shutdown)

I berate sales guys when they tell me payment amounts. I flat out tell them I don't care about the payment amounts, I care about the amount of the vehicle I'm looking at. Fuck off with selling me based on the payment amount.
