how to have headphones hooked up without muting my TV

I have a Roku TV that has a headphone jack on it. I was hoping that there was a software selection where I could choose weather to have audio going to TV speakers or headphones, but it automatically switches to headphones when they are plugged in.

They plug in in the back of the TV, so it is quite difficult to reach back then and slightly unplug them when I want to use the TV speakers, and then plug them in again when I would like to use the headphones.

Is there any easy way to solve this problem? There are a lot of times early in the morning, or late at night where I would like to use the headphones and to watch a show with decent volume, but don't want to wake others up. A simple software solution on/off in the Roku settings would have solved this for me, but I don't see it in any of the menus.

I'm not really sure how to get past this, and constantly plugging the headphones in/out (even if I could reach it in the back) would probably wear the jack out fairly quickly as well. I'm stuck - can't seem to come up with an easy solution!

Search "headphone switcher" on Amazon/Ebay. There are dozens of cheap switches.
When you switch to the un-used output, it should be the same as unplugging the headphones. I would think the mute button also disconnects the headphones.

Minijack extension cord
Wow, I hadn't considered something that simple - just bring the jack around where I can reach it easily. Hmm. But having it plugged in there mutes the regular speakers, so I'm not sure if that would solve the issue. How would I tell the TV to go back to using the speakers, when I wanted that?

Typically extension cords don't complete the circuit.

Post your exact make and model of TV. There might be some kind of "don't disconnect tv audio when using headphones." I know there is in my 2019 Samsung.

Or if your TV has an audio input, you could use the same switch linked above and have the audio go to the phones, or back to the TV. Gould even spend a little more and get one that has remote control.
