Almost all reviewers have noted that the webcam quality on Snapdragon laptops is generally better than Intel/AMD laptops.
Webcams always seem to have been cack on Windows for some reason.

It's literally easier to get a high quality image by streaming it from your phone through the wifi.

Either way image processing isn't magic - anything that you can do with an ISP you can probably do with a programmable GPU too.

So I'd say it's a software issue rather than a hardware one.

And yet Chrome released ARM native build days before X Elite was released if I am not mistaken, so great was Qualcomm success until this far
To be brutally fair Qualcomm don't have the full stack control like Apple do to force Mac devs to port their code bases to ARM.

Combine that with MS never going to switch away from x86 and the impetus for Windows devs to make WoA ports is less than stellar.

It's also a bit of a chicken and the egg scenario - without enough WoA market share the app devs aren't going to take the plunge to port, and without native app coverage a lot of professionals aren't going to settle for emulation.

Well, it was their choice to release all 8cx devices as premium devices for 5 years, without any sensible dev kits at the time. It was really hard to get any snapdragon Pi equivalent that wouldn't cost the same as actual laptop.

Not exactly great for partner relationships now is it?
Microsoft usually stabs their customers in the back.

Sega, Nokia, AMD (with their mandated Copilot+ specs ruining Ryzen HX AI line which could really have used an LLC instead of a stupid 50 TOPS NPU) etc.

The previous Azure consulting company we had, they couldn't figure out DB IOPS. They instead told us, if demand gets high, just increase the storage IOPS dynamically. The fine print said we would have to eat the cost of high IOPS for a minimum 12 hours and the cost for a single such instance of scaling up IOPS could get over $13000. We had to ditch them and go with another one who knew their stuff better. The first consulting company was recommended by Microsoft themselves, probably coz the Microsoft reps who made the recommendation were wined and dined by the lame consulting company which they also tried to do with us. Pity they didn't know that I can't be swayed by such tactics...

I don't even understand why they insist on releasing a souped up devkit. A cheaper SD Plus 16GB/512GB devkit would've served its purpose just fine.

Qualcomm repeatedly botched their launches over the last 7 years. I look forward to the Mediatek/Nvidia launch next year, it will have useable graphics to start with.

Qualcomm Gen3 won’t be on shelves till H12026 anyway even if they announce in Q4 2025.

Snapdragon X Elite Gen 2 is rumoured to have a 6+6 CPU, instead of the 4+4+4 CPU of X Elite Gen 1.

One workload that will benefit from the larger 6-core clusters will be gaming.

Most games have 4 to 8 threads, with the average being 6 threads. Being able to contain all 6 threads in a single cluster would be beneficial to performance.

Hopefully there are GPU and Prism improvements to make theoretical gains there materialize in real use.

Not really, but they played their hands really badly.

Qualcomm could hire the best design team in the world but it won't overcome all of their issues and deficiencies. They are too used to having all of the marketing "side effects" put the wind at their back so they can be terrible to deal with and their customers (who are OEMs not consumers) have no choice but to deal with them anyway. That's not the case when it comes to selling ARM SoCs to PC OEMs, let alone doing the work that interfaces directly with consumers like delivering drivers.

Its a helluva ride going from operating as a quasi monopoly who can tell their customers to go pound sand if they're unhappy to not only having to compete but having to compete from behind where the quasi monopoly is who you're competing against / trying to deal with!

Yeah, terminal premium handset brain there.
To think Intel carved out the Netbook niche with a pile of 130nm scraps, while Qualcomm had an ideal chip for them usecases, shilled The Modem™ and then proceeded to deliver exactly 0 $600 devices to move the MSS needle.
Please clap.

The sales figures are in;

720,000 devices sold on Q2/Q3.
0.8% of total PC sales in this time period.

It must be noted that these are almost all premium consumer laptops with X Elite/X Plus 10-core. OEMs have since released budget laptops with X Plus 8-core, and commercial laptops, but those are not included in the above figure.

I think that's a bit excessively harsh.
I don't think it is. They made big claims and failed to deliver on them but I do have high hopes for Gen3.

Edit: Microsoft is also to blame here with the failed copilot release for Snapdragon devices.

Thanks for correcting the maths. The article author writing the following (and putting the broken percentage in the headline to boost) kills me inside.

"This figure represents less than 0.008% of the total PCs shipped globally over the same period, equivalent to fewer than one out of every 125 devices."

I wish Gerard could tell us what was different at Qualcomm compared to Apple that prevented him from delivering something on par with M3. Is Apple using well researched productivity boosting tricks in their campus (maybe serving free brain enhancing concoctions to important engineers)?

700,000 premium laptops.

Not a roaring success, but not a flop either.
Not the story we were being served around launch time either. They were going to take the PC market by storm, remember? I argued it's not as simple as that, not with premium devices anyway. If you go for the premium market, you better have very few weak spots and most importantly premium software support. High ASP customers are often times professionals or follow trends set by them, and professionals surprisingly care about solid software support.

In their defense though, this year and probably the next will be tough for premium PCs with AI stickers on them. MS outdid themselves in terms of failing to deliver what consumers want, let alone what consumers need.
