8GB
Horizon Forbidden West 3060 is faster than the 2080 Super despite the former usually competing with the 2070. Also 3060 has a better 1% low than 4060 and 4060Ti 8GB.
Resident Evil Village 3060TI/3070 tanks at 4K and is slower than the 3060/6700XT when ray tracing:
Company Of Heroes 3060 has a higher minimum than the 3070TI:

10GB / 12GB

Reasons why still shipping 8GB since 2014 isn't NV's fault.
  1. It's the player's fault.
  2. It's the reviewer's fault.
  3. It's the developer's fault.
  4. It's AMD's fault.
  5. It's the game's fault.
  6. It's the driver's fault.
  7. It's a system configuration issue.
  8. Wrong settings were tested.
  9. Wrong area was tested.
  10. Wrong games were tested.
  11. 4K is irrelevant.
  12. Texture quality is irrelevant as long as it matches a console's.
  13. Detail levels are irrelevant as long as they match a console's.
  14. There's no reason a game should use more than 8GB, because a random forum user said so.
  15. It's completely acceptable for the more expensive 3070/3070TI/3080 to turn down settings while the cheaper 3060/6700XT has no issue.
  16. It's an anomaly.
  17. It's a console port.
  18. It's a conspiracy against NV.
  19. 8GB cards aren't meant for 4K / 1440p / 1080p / 720p gaming.
  20. It's completely acceptable to disable ray tracing on NV while AMD has no issue.
  21. Polls, hardware market share, and game title count are evidence 8GB is enough, but are totally ignored when they don't suit the ray tracing agenda.
According to some people here, 8GB is neeeevaaaaah NV's fault and objective evidence "doesn't count" because of reasons(tm). If you have others please let me know and I'll add them to the list. Cheers!

Frame generation is also turning into an important feature due to how badly games are optimized.

This was something I was concerned about several years ago and was it's sad to see my fears coming to pass.

Developers using the technology as a crutch because reviews don't focus on how the game runs without the bells and whistles is not something we should accept without protest.

Similarly, it gives the GPU makers another avenue for planned obsolescence as they can easily drop support for a laser generation cards that will not run newer games well due to needing the latest version of frame generation or super sampling technology for best results. What good is your 16 GB of VRAM if they have another way to make your card need an early replacement?

My gaming TV gets delivered tomorrow. Provided it doesn't need to be returned this is my last day of 1080/60.

I am playing Stalker 2 on my 7800X3D+7900XTX+32GB CL30 6000+2TB PCIe 4 nvme. 1080 epic FSR AA locked 60fps is buttery smooth with the exception of the couple of seconds when I hit the first town. It drops to 56-57 for a second or 3 sometimes where the CPU crunch is. Reminds me of when you look down into Diamond City from the steps in FO4. That was rough on most CPUs at the time. It dropped during the first cutscene in the bar as well, but it was smooth.

I don't know that I would call it a memory leak, it peaked at about 18GB of vram (I played for 5hrs straight) but I experienced none of the hiching, microstutter, or any of the other stuff besides the badly flickering textures on walls, at the big military base with the towers. I saw DF Alex (I like what the initials could be construed as meaning ) reported the same flickering using the 4090. Seems more like it is using the framebuffer to good effect.

This has always been an issue on PC. The difference is that average specs haven't completely obliterated everything on the consoles at all aspects. And yes VRAM is one of those.

Plus people without the highest end stuff were more willing to not run at max settings.

Stalker is a shitshow on 8GB GPUs

Even 10gb is suspect now !!!

Achieving 60 fps at 1080p requires at least a Radeon RX 7800 XT or RTX 3080. However, the previous generation 10GB GPU showed some struggles with 1% lows – not to an alarming degree, but there were noticeable dips. Speaking of dips, the 8GB models were completely unplayable, failing to meet acceptable performance standards.

Frame this diagram

An interesting observation is that the 16GB RTX 4060 Ti averaged 65 fps, making it 10% faster than the 8GB version. However, in terms of 1% lows, the 16GB model was 100% faster, delivering a much better experience. This aligns with findings at 1440p with upscaling.

The takeaway here is that 8GB graphics cards encounter performance issues even at 1080p with upscaling in this game. Whether future optimizations will address this remains uncertain, though some improvement is likely.

Once again I'm very happy with the 4070S perf here(I might be tiny bit biased ).

Whats up RDNA3 cards, they are performing poorly at 1440p? Hopefully AMD releases a driver update because they haven't released one. While Nvidia and Intel have done so already.

Enjoy Hub's take on 8GB for 5k series cards from Nvidia. "How much?" If it plays in your language that is. Youtube has decided some of us can only watch it in Spanish, Italian, Portugese or French. Though watching the two of them complain in espanol about nvidia could be fun.
