for any Dune product you will need to make your own decision because my attitude to Dune is hypercritical. but yes, they are related and i did not like it past the first 30 seconds.
to be clear, it has nothing to do with the "break canon". the only canon issue is that they have an introductory speech saying that the butlerian jihad was a "war" against the machines, a Terminator-style bombs and guns to the robots, while it wasn't that in the book, but i really don't care for the change because the end result "there are no more thinking machines" is the same. no, the acting and direction is bad, thats why i didnt like it.

btw, i did like Romulus. Not like OMG BBQ but it was nice.
I think I made it 5 to 10 minutes before falling asleep. I remember the banning of thinking machines. Then it goes blank.

I have to comment on this one. I was pharmaceutical meth for a while and I have to say, no bueno.

The feats of endurance and strength are probably pushing the plausibility envelope, but they're done with purpose and humor. One of my all time fave Statham movies.

I wouldn't have objected if they'd made a passing reference to those of us whom the drug puts to sleep, but seriously, who would believe that anyway.
What I dig most about the Cranked movies is someday they will be considered period pieces. 🤣

Local theater does $5 Tuesdays so went and checked Heretic out today. Definitely a strong 9/10. Thought the idea of a crazy religious scholar imprisoning two hot Mormon missionary girls looked like it would be a fun ride in the previews and it was; great acting all around and Hugh Grant was a fucking lunatic.

Started watching The last voyage of the Demeter, on lunch break so... really would probably be better on a 65 4k with a dark room, (the movie is dark) but it is very anticipatingly obvious. But I like Vampire movies, so 7ish/10 on the condition I have not finished it yet.

EDIT: I thought Alien Romulus was supposed to hit stream on the 19th, now I'm seeing the 21st. Ugh

Landman

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14186672/

New Paramount+ series from Taylor Sheridon (Yellowstone, 1883, 1923) starring Billy Bob Thorton and Demi Moore about the oil business. Thorton plays a guy who negotiates with land owners where they drill for oil in West, Texas. Probably a bit unrealistic at times, but Billy Bob makes almost anything worth watching for me. There was a funny part with his daughter, but overall kind of uneven so can't give it more than 7/10. Got to watch the first one for free on Prime.

Small Town Crime - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5751998/reference/

Fairly competent and easy cop film.

John Hawkes (True Detective, Peanut Butter Falcon, Three Billboards) plays Mike. Mike used to be a cop, and one night he was drunk out of his mind, which led to his partner getting killed and him accidentally killing a hostage. Kicked out of the police force, he can't find a direction in life.

One day after a drunken blackout, he finds a dying girl on the roadside. He starts the investigation pretending to be a private investigator, seeing this as a redeeming act that can bring him back to the light. Shootings and sleuthings ensue, to the classic shootout ending.

Well acted, story is meh, direction is fine but nothing exceptional, sountrack severely lacking, the real star of the show is the Chevy Nova that Mike drives. Excellent performance by bad guy Jeremy Ratchford and horribly shoehorned in Octavia Spencer in a minuscule role.

6.5/10 - probably not worthy of your time

OK finished Last voyage of the Demeter, being generous with 5/10. Half the movie was too dark lighting wise, but late 1800s at sea ok.

But then 2 examples of how to kill it are given WAY before being close to landfall. They even find it's sleeping quarters in the cargo hold. Why on earth would they not bring that out of the hold and put it on deck during daylight hours? HUGE FACEPALM.

EDIT: Also there's an inconsistency early on that doesn't jive later on. But 'some of the special effects were ok. Again too dark.

So wife was looking though Tubi, and came across a movie called "Meth Gator"

I assume it is to compete with "Cocaine Bear"
I just had to laugh because its the above but with "Florida man" in it as well. I can only assume it'd be a -1/10

The TV show EVIL, on paramount or CBS, is decent, if you like the heaven hell stuff. I play Diablo so.. I'm a sucker for that. 7/10.

Has that one guy from Lost in it. Plays a bad character in some other shows as well. Watched first 2 seasons on Netflix, then found there are 4 on Paramount+.

Mary Queen Of Scots (2018) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2328900/reference/

Solid historical recreation about the short and sad life of the titular Mary, with Saoirse Ronan as Mary, and Margot Robbie, almost unrecognizable, and practically only in 1 scene, as Elizabeth I.
Absolutely excellent from a production perspective, but it suffers from the same problem as Kagemusha - it cannot embellish the story, and the story is firmly meh. So come for the visual spectacle and excellent acting but expect nothing more.

7.5/10
oh yeah they also added a bit of comedy by throwing in a couple of ethnically-creative casting choices, but they are brief and all minor characters, so they don't spoil the film.

in preparation for The Day Of The Jackal, i watched

The Day Of The Jackal - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069947/reference/

the 1973 original.
Oh boy.
When i started watching, i thought "uhm, this film has some good pacing. Stuff happens at a fairly rapid rate and we've already set up a good backstory for the main plot".
The the plot keeps advancing, and then it keeps advancing, and, then i notice that i'm half an hour in of a 2h20m film.
Yeah because TDOTJ needs to tell you eeeevery bit of the story in detail.

Edward Fox (who's only had minor roles since) is The Jackal, a british (it's relevant) assassin at the pay of a group of french ultranationalists, who want Charles De Gaulle, the airport guy, assassinated for having granted independence to Algeria.
The Jackal takes on the mission and moves first to Rome, then around the world to gather his gear and set up a plan for the assassination. At the same time the secret service of half of europe is looking for him, but since he's just one guy, it's not exactly easy to find him, with 1960s technology.

I thought the film was ok; i loved seeing the french riviera, and rome, back before everything was neon and publicity posters, before traffic, and found the plot and acting to be interesting, but not two-and-a-half-hours interesting. I guess watching it with friends would probably alleviate a bit the pressure, but who's got friends nowadays, amirite?

Currently at a high 7.8/10 on IMDb, i wouldn't go higher than a 6.5/10. The intricacies of the plot is what made the book great (allegedly) so i'm not sure it could be cut in any sensible way. And frankly, the whole film is shot in a way that we're kinda rooting for the bad guy, when said bad guy gets killed just before he can complete his mission, it kinda sucks.

Does this have anything to do with the Bruce Willis "The Jackal"? Out of curiosity.

Also watched over the weekend "I care alot" Has Peter Dinklage in it, along with 2 other I think well known actresses that I don't feel like looking up.
The whole premise if this can be done is quite disturbing if the plot can be done in reality. Wouldn't surprise me in America though.

I think you do end up rooting for the obviously real bad guy, but can be torn from the bad women, and the Judge, just a face palm.
