estimated to cost each household $1200 per year, just on these tariffs.

Thanks, fucking Trump cvnts! I hope you all get sick and die early.
Sounds like something that the typical educated liberal can easily absorb in their budget without even noticing and that will cause pain to broke Trump voters. I’m for it.

A lot of liberals are making under 60k a year..

120k seems like the normal but it only seems that way and there are a ton of tech layoffs. And also lots of people in 40's and 50's who find it hard to get re-employed.

Most liberals while trying to find jobs are actually working jobs like amazon truck driver/ uber/ home health aide.. so there is no "absorbing" these tariffs.. and in populated areas.. it's most like double or triple that.

FFS just look at a mcdonalds quarter pounder burger.. it might cost $4 something in Indiana but it's $7 in NY. This will just have landlords push up rents even more.

More of them should have showed up to vote then. Sucks for those who did. The country as a whole needs to learn a hard lesson. Easy times weak men etc etc that idiots like to throw out there without realizing they are the weak men who voted for an authoritarian because of some weak economic complaints during one of the most prosperous times in the history of civilization.

Which does not even include the effects of inevitable Mexican retaliation. Some products cross the border multiple times before they are complete, I think this is especially true for auto parts iirc. This would really rack up the costs fast.

Assuming Trump actually goes through with these tariffs the silver lining will be watching the courts expose their hypocrisy. The costs of these tariffs is somewhere around $200 billion/year, making them far more expensive than multiple things SCOTUS decided were 'major questions'.

Trump’s signal here is also that he will use tariffs to address non-trade related complaints. Once other countries realize there will be no end to this negotiating with somebody who already can’t tell the truth even if it helps him will seem entirely futile. They might just walk and take whatever is coming.

This has always been Trump's problem - because he's a huge liar he can't make credible commitments.

If I had to guess they will pull a China where they agree to Trump's demands so that he can declare victory and then ignore them. Like remember the additional $200 billion in US exports China agreed to buy as part of their trade deal? Looks like the real number turned out to be $0.

We can always invade the egg producing nation of Wakanda and secure their fertile, bird flu free egg supply.

Not only did the Chinese not fulfill their end they went to Brazil and invested heavily in the ag sector there creating a major competitor for US farmers lol. Probability the US gets similarly hosed in future trade realignments is high.

It is mind boggling on the one hand but understandable on the other how ignorant Americans are a whole. They still have no clue what tariffs are and seem to have no concept that other countries can, you know, fucking retaliate! Never thought I would see republicans embrace tariffs which use to be antithetical to their “free trade” mantra. Fascism and ignorance has won.

It’s like all the Trump voters think tariffs will lower their COL and make them millionaires because they are so dumb as to believe tariffs on China means China pays more for their exports and not themselves as the consumers. Lord.

It is pretty amazing how little people understand a very basic tenet of economics, one that is almost universally accepted, that trade barriers are a lose/lose proposition. In some cases other considerations could override the economic ones, sure, but we should do that eyes open.

It's a very simple question - if tariffs don't raise prices for US consumers then what exactly are they accomplishing? Is the idea that if we put tariffs in place other countries will simply pay us tribute? It didn't work last time, why would it work this time?

I personally like all the farmers that depend on migrant labor who voted for Trump three times scratching their heads now with concern that he might do what he says and destroy their businesses. Not going to be sorry to see these people have to eat shit.

But libs have been owned, the browns and the trans have been put in their places.

So despite losing the farm it is still a win .

Sadly I think the more likely answer is special exemptions for groups that support Trump. Despite hearing it a lot I still think people drastically underestimate the amount of corruption we're looking at here. The basic authority at play is that the president can unilaterally raise or lower trade barriers on whoever and whatever he wants, he just has to say it's for national security.

Like, do people realize that after July's SCOTUS ruling Trump could host a press conference in the Oval Office, accept a cartoon bag with a dollar sign on the side labeled 'Trump bribe', and then announce to the world that he was removing tariffs for that person's business because they bribed him and this would be 100% legal?

To me this is a very clear attempt to recraft the US as a patronage state. The government will not operate by neutral principles, it will operate based on your loyalty to the leader.

Seen a lot of people pulling forward appliance purchases too.
*raises his hand*

Yep, we are finishing a kitchen remodel next year that includes a new microwave, range hood, oven, and cooking surface. I've already noticed the prices on my wife's preferred appliances have increased!

We're gonna go purchase these things now and leave em in my garage until we do the remodel. Sucks if there's an issue with the appliance when we finally get around to installing them and turning them on.

We were considering a new TV next year when we move to replace a 42" 1080p set that is 14 years old. Instead, we're just going to move with it and use it till it dies. We're not hurting for cash, and could certainly afford a future price hike, but with the likely hikes, we see this an opportunity to generate less waste, and put off an appliance purchase longer.

We just got a 77" LG OLED, a new worshing machine, and I'm ordering the matching dryer. Our propane tank was just filled, and we both have new vehicles, so hopefully we can not contribute the Trump's economy any more than we have to. Of course the first 3 years he will claim credit for anything good that Biden left him as his accomplishments, but oh well.

Farmers make up a tiny portion of the "rural" population but are also the most heavily subsidized population in the US. They won't get hurt.

The majority of rural folks are aren't farmers and are going to get bit by higher prices.

Farmers will have trouble finding workers willing to do the labor. I don't live in a farming town, but we have a stupid amount of Orange groves. Any person can walk off the street and instantly get a job picking oranges here. White people refuse to do this work, I know unemployed ones who I tell them "you can go pick oranges" they say "fuck that" It's 99% illegals, and they'll get deported if Trump has his way. Without the illegals I have no clue how these oranges will get picked. And I think to this day, Riverside's one of the biggest sources for Oranges in the entire US.

If the orange groves out here have to start paying white people $20 an hour to pick them, OJ will be out of most peoples price range.
