Wow really impressed with Proxmox, it's way better than the first time I tried to use it, which was like probably like 10 years ago. Super easy to setup and everything more or less works.

I have a temp setup right now running on ESXi, and I am having some issues getting VT-D to work, so I'm not getting good performance but that will be solved when I put this on bare metal hardware. This is not an ideal setup but even then it is working ok.

I even made a cluster to play around with as it's my first time experiencing ability to do live migrations in a non enterprise environment running expensive licensed software. This is all free. Tested a migration and it was flawless. Ping from my workstation to the VM being migrated:

The 3ms is when the migration started, there's also a 11ms blip. That's it. Nothing in dmesg or anything like that either, the guest OS pretty much did not see a thing.

Now I'm itching to buy hardware but I really don't have the budget yet. I have about 3k in my savings but that's for my power upgrades, need to finish that first, then start saving up for hardware. As much as I'd like to go with some rackmount servers I can't justify the cost anymore due to less disposable income now days so will go with off lease SFF workstations. They are super cheap on ebay, like $300 shipped for a decent i7 one. Goal is to get like 5+ of them. I might start with 2 and add more later. I'll keep the old ESXi box around but slowly migrate stuff off it over time.

Playing with proxmox in a VM really has me itching to buy hardware to build a proper cluster now. Looking at SFF boxes on Ebay, I might pull the trigger on 2 of them. Start with a 2 node cluster, then upgrade the existing VM server to Proxmox once I migrate everything over. Consider it an early Christmas present to myself, brought to you by Mastercard.

Got preoccupied with doing random stuff around the house that I only realized now that I didn't even eat anything yet. Probably should do that.

Used the snow blower for first time and snow blowed a path to the back yard so I can get some firewood. Ended up bringing some in just now and putting fans on it since it's full of snow. Hopefully it will sublimate rather than leak all over, but one of the fans is pointed at the ground so it will take care of whatever does end up on the ground. Should probably have put plastic down before storing wood there. It's just a sub floor though so not a huge deal, will eventually put vinyl flooring or something.

I was feeling pretty special. Mastercard invited me to join the elite few Mastercard Black cardholders. The higher cash back and travel perks sound like things someone of my high social standing would be entitled to. The card is made of stainless steel which oozes luxury and sophistication. Then I got to the annual fee, $495. Plus another $195 for my wife to have a card. I didn't see hookers and blow among the perks so into the recycling bin it goes with the lesser card offers.

I can't imagine paying that much for the privilege of borrowing money lol. Although there are people who know all the tricks to fully take advantage of these things as they often come with various perks too. Read a story of a guy who has a special airline unlimited flight ticket that costs 100's of thousands, but he got his full money worth out of it. He doesn't have a job or house or anything and no bills. He just travels non stop for free. Instead of a hotel he just books a flight to sleep on the plane and also gets free food out of the flights and airport lounges. Genius.

I put in vents on the basement door, was undecided between putting 4 3" round vents at the bottom and 4 on top or just put two regular registers, had to be narrow enough and I found some that fit. Went with the registers but without an easy way to mount them I decided to just pull two registers together on both sides using zip ties. It doesn't look half bad, I will need to buy 2 more vents to do the top as I did not anticipate adding vents on both sides but it makes for a cleaner finish and it's how they stay in place.

These will act as a return for the air I will pump into the main floor but will also work naturally to bring heat up via convection. Cold air from the main floor will naturally flow down the bottom and hot air from the basement will flow out the top one. I noticed this phenomenon any time I open the door. I can actually feel the cold air rushing down to the basement, and if I put my hand up I can feel the hot air rushing out.

I installed and used Python for the first time this evening. Pretty nice language, not terribly different from perl. I wanted to use an import script for Quicken data and it actually worked. It's going to save me a lot of typing.

I've played a bit with Python but have not done anything too extensive with it, I'd have to play with it more. I took a 30+ hour course on it at work for fun but I wouldn't consider myself remotely knowledgeable in it without actually using it to build something with it.

I'm looking at my tie wrap job for securing the vents and I might actually just keep it this way, I just need to find white ones so it blends in more. Nobody will even know unless they look close. I went a little high on the top one though, the edge of the vent will interfere with the molding on the other side. I'll just chisel that out. Going to buy the 2 other vents tomorrow.

Talk about a handyman job but it does the trick.
