If that was your business.. what would you do?
I have to be absolutely honest.. I'd shoot him!
That's an Apple store. All those phones are absolutely worthless after he left with them and Apple isn't exactly short of money.

If it's your livelihood I get it, its bread on the table and a message to the local community that your place is a finding out area. That being said how much different is this from a bank robbery? You would have to assume he is carrying a gun right? Even if I was carrying myself and I had 99.9% odds I am not getting in on that action.I wasn't talking about Apple.. I was talking if it was your mom and pop store. Lets be honest people steal from them too..
being a guy who used to manager wireless stores.
DONT PUT LIVE DEVICES OUT IF YOU DONT WANT THEM STOLEN.
Unless consumer habits have changed substantially in the last 10 years, there is little point to leaving so many live devices out. They don’t get used and on that rare occasion they are used it’s for prank calls or surfing porn.
The only reason why so many are out is because someone in Marketing thinks they look nice and have a undefined but per their words “a positive effect” on the customer experience or some sales manager is doing it just because they were told to do it.
I realize that’s an Apple Store and I realize that doesn’t hit their margins.
Every Apple Store I have ever visited are filled with people who just mill about looking at crap.

You are doing the quality vs quantity fallacy again. You cant point to a single burglary and scream the sky is falling. What does the statistics say. Crime going up or down?
Oh I know, I have requested many live replacement devices in my time.I'm not sure if I told this story here.. but I bought my second last phone with my wife at a store that was then robbed but the cops were outside.. so they went into confront the robber but he had a fake gun.. they ran out and were shot at by other police thinking they were the thieves and the detective passed away.
True story.. but my point was these robberies do happen to non Apple stores!

i'm in tears that someone actually 'cared' , if they cared so much why didn't they themselves intervene?

Nothing, because I don't own an apple store and if I did I wouldn't give a shit about a dozen worthless display phones that I could brick remotely and tell an underling to submit an insurance claim for. Hell I wouldn't even press charges, not like you can squeeze blood from a stone and that poor bastard clearly needs the scratch.

about all that idiot can do with those devices is to sell the parts i'd think?
The options basically are 1) sell them overseas to people with sufficient expertise to unbrick them 2) sell them for parts 3) sell them to morons who do not know they are bricked.
Apple netted almost 100B in profit in 2023. They do not give a fuck about this.
Primarily why I don't put my bank info in my phone.. computer at home yes but a phone no.
Yep, Apple has already taken steps to make these functionally useless, except for organized crime. The people doing the grabs are just the patsies. The options basically are 1) sell them overseas to people with sufficient expertise to unbrick them 2) sell them for parts 3) sell them to morons who do not know they are bricked.

Allegedly, this describes some of the display phone features (granted, it's 4 years old): https://medium.com/macoclock/stolen-iphones-are-disabled-and-tracked-332b68715bbfBut do they attempt to track them with find my iPhone?
Honestly, my immediate instinct when someone is stealing food is to have sympathy with the person who needs to steal food.FFS I saw some women stealing fruit out of a grocery shop yesterday!
