I just built a new PC. See my signature. I have a ton of new games I want to play. I currently have a Corsair XENEON 315QHD165 and I like it well enough but I have been thinking about taking the 4K OLED plunge. My question is mainly to those of you who may already have the monitor mentioned in the subject or other OLED monitors. Is it really worth it to upgrade from IPS and 1440p? Is the video quality in games so much better? I know this can be a subjective question, I'm just asking for opinions. Talk me into it or out of it. Thank you.

4k is objectively better than 2k and OLED is objectively better than IPS.

Drawback are:

OLED has traditionally been dimmer but this is changing.

4k is harder on your GPU.

With OLED you risk long term degradation and burn in.

Added cost.

Basically OLED is better in most every way if you can afford the drawbacks.

If you can't afford the drawbacks better to stick with IPS.

Another way to go is a better LCD panel with MicroLED/local dimming and QLED/quantum dots.

My buddy was afraid of burn in so he went the MicroLED/quantum route and he is happy.

I have one. It's overrated and not worth it in my opinion. I prefer my old 4K 160Hz IPS monitor for daily, mixed use. The OLED looks better in games that don't display flickering gray but it has so many drawbacks in regular use that I cannot recommend it.

So the monitor I mentioned in my subject is an OLED but it is also a

MSI MPG 321URX QD-OLED, 32" 4K UHD Quantum Dot OLED Gaming Monitor

So would that be the best of both worlds?

So you have the one mentioned in my subject? And you say that for regular day to day use it has a lot of drawbacks?

I play a lot of games, but I am also a Web Developer so I will be using it for productivity.

Yes indeed and the work load is mixed. If you prioritize gaming over work then it might be worth it. But I'm the opposite now days - more work, less games.

Yes, except the burn in issues.

MicroLED (not mini) is perhaps the very best technology but it hasn't shrunk down to monitor size just yet.

Saw a big one worth tens of thousands of dollars in a company meeting room. It was fantastic! It had contrast like an OLED but the pixels are more durable. I could tell right away that it wasn't an LCD or projector, did some research and learned about MicroLED. I think the smallest one they make is 38 inches.

Apple quit on MicroLED, because it was so pricey to produce. Samsung was selling a 89 inch model for 110k. Not sure if Samsung is still making it, but I'm pretty sure it's out of the OP's price range.

I picked up a 32 inch QD-OLED monitor a week before Black Friday, and have been spending more time with it than I've been spending with my wife. I also have an LG C1 OLED that I was using as a monitor. I got it in 2021, and it's picture still looks new. My baby though, is my Sony A95L QD-OLED. It is by far the best TV I've ever seen {I have yet to see a MicroLED set yet} All three have burn in prevention tools, that have worked great so far. If you want peace of mind, buy a warranty that covers burn in. Best Buy offers one, I have it on all three of my sets.

Which 32in QD-OLED monitor did you get that you like so much if you don't mind me asking?

The only knock that I have with it, is that it's made by Asus. Asus is said to have crap customer service now, but they have always done right by me. I did get a warranty for it though.

That's interesting because I am looking closely at the PG32UCDP which I guess is a close cousin. I will have to look close at them to see the differences in them. But they look close.

Edit: Weird....when I look at the two of them on Amazon they are listed as two different monitors, but when I add them to my cart they are the same monitor.

Edit: Just compared them on Asus site. The P model is WOLED and the M model is QD-OLED

Yes, that's the difference between the two. The P can also do 480Hz.

So, based on your recommendation I am really leaning toward getting the M model. I have put it off because I was worried about the hassles I've read about OLED and having to switch HDR on and off when going from a gaming environment to a office environment. Is that something that you have experienced? Is it possible to just leave HDR on? or do you only use it for gaming?

You can just leave it on, but I turn it off when I'm not watching or playing something.

You can hit win+alt+b to quickly switch between HDR being on and off. It's not an issue. I switched to an OLED panel recently and it was the biggest upgrade I've made in years. I don't notice any drawbacks besides burn-in anxiety, which I find I care about less and less as time goes by.

The Burn-In has kept me from OLED.

It is not something that may happen, but WILL happen.

I cannot justify purchasing a monitor for just a 3 year or so time period.

Just saw my buddy's OLED for the first time since the burn in and it breaks my heart. Before the burn in it looked marvelous, now I'm happy we have a cheap LCD with no burn in.

I mean a modern OLED just destroys our cheap LCD, until it gets burn in...

The reason I bought this one is because the price dropped from $1100 to $650, and it's still that price today. I wouldn't pay much more for an OLED because of burn in. As nice as it is, these really are disposable products. Better to get them for cheap and enjoy them while they last, like an ice cream cone.

EDIT: Don't get it confused though. This monitor has transformed my PC using experience, especially gaming, in a massive way that I did not expect. Playing Doom Eternal in HDR is absolutely ridiculous and nothing like using a regular monitor. I'd rather buy a new OLED monitor every few years than go back to IPS. It's that good.
Regular monitors have no brightness control at all. They just use the same brightness for everything. The OLED has brightness control, so dark areas are dark but then those bright, colorful lights are actually bright like they should be. It's crazy if you haven't seen it before. IPS just has one big light behind the screen and it shines the same all the time. Really stupid.

Yeah. That's called local dimming. Mini-LED monitors come a bit close especially if they have over 1000 dimming zones but an OLED has millions of zones (individual pixels) that can turn on or off.

I had taken advantage of the Dell Alienware 34inch OLED before returning it a week later.

I had an issue with running it as a Second monitor (and it never seemed to do the pixel refresh properly).

But, OMFG did WoW look AMAZING!

Unfortunately, the realist side of me kicked in, and began to recognize that this was going to need to be replaced no matter HOW much I performed the refresh and best practices.

So, I plugged back in my Ghetto 27inch IPS and try to forget my week long fling with the Goddess.

A mix of gaming and media consumption (I always try to stretch the video by changing aspect ratio to get rid of black bars) should avoid serious issues.

But seems miniLED monitor prices have crashed?

Any of those with more than 1000 dimming zones should give great picture quality/HDR as well as peace of mind.
