Apparently they don't want controversial social issues on their site. I get that. Someone will come along and start a political Facebook or Instagram clone and everything will be fine.

Good, if true... But, once they find that there's less traffic on their apps (and less moola), they'll be back in on it. I am calling it

This is bad news?
Sounds like a good thing to me

Social media (other than unmoderated forums) is a blight. Society is addled with conspiracy theory sickness (remember the quaint Flat Earthers, how tame are they now) and it's spread through FB and Youtube and others. FB has been used by governments to spread propaganda against political rivals, Malaysia iirc was one example from years ago. This can only improve things, if they are actually serious about it. Which I doubt, since more agitated eyeballs mean more $$$$ for Zuck. After the 2016 election I realized being on Facebook was just adding to my stress levels and ditched it. I'll still look for certain informative things on Youtube but the assholes continue to throw up clickbait garbage in the suggested list.

Saw an interesting study that found that on average people were whipping out their devices to 'check in' on Facebook and other sites every five minutes. They determined this was an anxiety behavior related to a fear of missing out on something important. Hint: you aren't.

Wouldn’t all those be included?

I strongly disagree with your use of the present tense. This seems entirely on brand for Meta.

Yeah, Facebook has been doing shit like this for over a decade. They actively helped enable genocide by working with groups literally coordinating attacks and other to keep their stuff on there (taught them how to adjust their posts to keep it from being banned/removed) while they helped ban groups fighting against it and documenting the genocide.

But, good luck running a social media platform where you try to block people talking about social and political (inherently social) content. This is like OnlyFans trying to remove adult content, only dumber.

I understand this, though I have mixed feelings. I am in a gaming community where we don't talk about politics and such, as it often causes disagreements and drama/fights online, and we don't want to deal with this. We are here to be a gaming community, and have fun together.

Now Facebook is much larger, so this is a bit different, and they are not just for gaming. My understanding is there are many communities within Facebook, with different focuses. That said, they do have a right to moderate their own site, at least to my knowledge. This probably makes moderation tasks much easier.

Perhaps a compromise would be to create a political section where politics are allowed, but not allow them elsewhere on the site?

Anyway, this doesn't really affect me, I don't like social media.

This would h
Maybe we need a platform that is ONLY political/civic related content. Maybe keeping family/friend platform separate from a political one isn't a bad thing.
this would have 0 traffic. Logic and Facts are woke garbage. Biden eats white Christian heterosexual couple babies to help promote the communist agenda is far more believable to the deplorables. Because if you know you know

The money that Packman and others receive is only a percentage of what Meta collects. This has a very Musk'y smell to it. He must have stumbled over a political based user that didn't have kind words for him.

I've been on threads since day one and it's been pretty good and not a shit show. I have no issue with a site allowing you to opt in or opt out of political posts, the question is, how are they going to define what a political post is? As we know, FB amplifies right wing drivel. Christ, the majority of my suggested posts on FB are right-leaning to fucking nutso right-wing. And I have unfriended any MAGA person from my friends list so I simply don't interact with that stuff, why would I want it in my feed? So really, it depends what FB is going to filter out, because they don't have a good track record on what content they suppress vs promote.

Threads so far is fine except there was 2-3 weeks when the Israeli ethnic cleansing of Gaza started, there was a nonstop suggestion of all these new super pro zionist posts, by tons of new users, tons looked like hacidic jews or rabbis in their photos, and was likely a big bot surge. I mean I couldn't scroll a couple minutes in my feed without seeing like five or more of those short posts. Other than that, it's pretty chill over there.

Elon will make sure Twitter will pick up the slack and intentionally push pro Nazi content into everyone's feed. Wait, guess Elon already does that.
We know that is true. Musk has already retweeted antisemitic content.

I agree with you in general, but it gets murkier than that. If you allow everything but politics, there will be large amounts of grey-area content where politics and everyday reality collide. For example:

"I live in <insert gay hating region here>. Any suggestions for after-school clubs I can safely send my gay kid to?"
"I am an anti-vaxxer, my kid is unvaxxed in the middle of a measles epidemic. What am I to do?"

And there will of course be people who will abuse those grey areas where moderation needs to be intelligently applied but often isn't, who start groups/conversations along the lines of "I am a concerned citizen regarding <their brand of bigotry>, and here is my totally factual story".

I think it's a lot easier to moderate if the forum is about a specific topic, then the mods can simply say that the user content has to be directly related to that specific topic. Unless the topic is something largely based on feelings, such as most forms of bigotry.

Having said that, most "specific topic" forums have "general discussion" subforums because it allows like-minded people to socialise and thereby fuel further use of the site (and then the users find out that they're not as like-minded as they thought).

Social media exists because it gives people who feel but don’t know they feel worthless a chance to feel important. What makes people who feel worthless feel worth something is if they get shit on. At least it is attention they couldn’t get otherwise. And if you cater to people who feel worthless, you have the biggest customer base in the world. It’s sucker city.

~On the same day as White's appointment, Meta announced the elimination of its third-party fact-checking program, shifting towards a "Community Notes" model similar to that of X (formerly Twitter).

~In an accompanying video, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the company’s current rules in these areas as “just out of touch with mainstream discourse.”

One outstanding quality of people who are full of self hate and unaware of it is their capacity to manifest a 'rainbowed' cornucopia of sick behaviors. Imagine if you were to add to that the notion that if you having money is proof of greatness. What a lovely combination that would be, the means by which to do a deep dive and amplify your mental illness. If only I could be like that. I think I envy that Fuckerberg.

That reminds me, I need to buy an Island just for me.
