I'm looking to buy a *RELIABLE* NVME-USB external adapter, that doesn't disconnect randomly, can keep up the close to 1GB/s speed.
So far all adapter's reviews contain frighteningly high % of reports of malfunction, random disconnects, sub-par speeds, falling to even under USB 2.0 speeds, etc.
There are 3 main chipsets in the market: JMicron JMS583, Asmedia ASM2362, and Realtek RTL9210 (no product has surfaced with the latter yet, so no REAL reviews, experiences yet UPDATE: it is on the market already).
Also ASUS has a new product, ROG Strix Arion, but there isn't enough feedback about it yet, and I mean real life feedback not just being able to run a few benchmarks, but real stress test to see if the device (adapter) can keep it up, without disconnecting or slowing down hard.
I would really appreciate any feedback from those who have GOOD experiences during stress-tests, like tons of random 4k writes with a stable speed, cloning 100's of GB-s at a stable high speed close to 1GB/s.
I know SSD's very well, so please stick to the point and don't start to educate me on how their speed falls after some writes, etc. I'm aware and this is NOT the point.
You can help if you can point me to a STABLE and RELIABLE NVMe-USB-C adapter that WORKS as expected.
Thank you in advance!

Hello!
I was testing with diff. firmwares - everytime was the same effect. My guess is that there is not enough power. :/ Maybe I need to use Y-cable?
Have you ever used 4TB NVMe in enclosures? Which models was working good?
I am using a 4 TB Samsung 990 Pro with a USB 4 enclosure with ASD2464PD. It’s 100% stable, used with my M4 Mac mini.

The drive+enclosure draws 7.5-8 Watts under load (and 5-5.5 Watts idle). Luckily my Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 ports provide 15 Watts.

The enclosure I am using is the Qwiizlab ES40UR, which I believe is manufactured by Colorii.

Thank you Eug for answer!
Qwiizlab ES40UR / Hagibis MC40 or OWC Express 1M2 are great and believe atm top enclosures...
Hoped ORICO-M223C3-G4 will be also good enough for 4TB Kingston Fury Renegade M.2 Pci-e 4.0 NVMe.
Maybe need to measure Watts in my ports... :/

USB-C ports only need to provide 7.5 Watts. That may be borderline for some enclosure+SSD combinations, although AFAIK, typically USB 3.2 enclosures require less power than USB 4 enclosures.

Bad enclosure. Plastic does not dissipate heat from RTL9210 during operation.

With RTL9210 (and JMS583) there are two main rules:
1. The adapter body must be made entirely of metal.
2. Always use the latest firmware version. Now it's 1.33.44
FWIW, the lid of that one is aluminum. (I have one.) I agree it's not a good enclosure, but it does at least have some metal, which is thermally connected to the SSD through a thermal pad.

We always suspected heat dissipitation but we only have problem with one recording mode which is 100fps recording. One of the community members put his JMS583 PCB inside the Orico enclosure and had no problem with the recording mode.

I should note that the reason the Orico enclosure is used is because that there is an accessory for our camera that mounts on the bottom and let’s us slide the Orico neatly inside to create a small footprint. In hindsight the creator of the accessory should’ve used a full metal enclosure, but we only have problem with the RTL9210. I will try and see if I can do something for the heat dissipitation for the RTL9210 chip and do some more testing.

Oh and there is an Electronic Viewfinder for the camera that mounts on the USB-C port of the camera and itself has an USB-C port for continuously connection with a ssd. So it extends the connection from the camera body in a way. I discovered yesterday when I use this accessory I have no problem recording 100fps with the RTL9210 inside the Orico enclosure.

ASM2362 and ASM2364 firmware will most prob be cross flashable
the 10gbps lockout is usually done at the factory

I run ASM235CM firmware on ASM225CM just fine (locked at 5gbps though ofc)
as they are the same chip one is just locked at 5gbps one is 10gbps

also usbdev dot ru list

Asmedia ASMT-2360 Firmware (ASM2360, ASM2362, ASM2364)

i would say there's a 99% chance it will work fine

if your feeling brave you can try flashing it
I posted them here

AS_PCIE_210901_91_00_00.bin
AS_PCIE_230927_91_00_00.bin
That was the first thing i did when i did get all firmwares from usbdev. I did try to crossflash but it is not accepted. ASM2362 and ASM2364 can't be crossflashed. I did try with older upgraders and also latest version and with all the result it is the same - FAIL

To be more exact there are 2 types of RTL9210 (10Gbps)
1. NVME ONLY MODEL RTL9210A witch has latest firmware available today 1.29.12 from 2022.01.11
2. NVME AND SATA MODEL RTL9210B with has today latest firmware available 1.33.44 from 2024.01.18

They cross flashable. I have updated successfully ASM2362 to AS_PCIE_230927_91_00_00.bin
1. NVME ONLY MODEL RTL9210A witch has latest firmware available today 1.29.12 from 2022.01.11
2. NVME AND SATA MODEL RTL9210B with has today latest firmware available 1.33.44 from 2024.01.18
1. NVMe only model RTL9210B (in older flasher RTL9210_VB)
2. NVMe and SATA model RTL9210B-CG
And are also updated successfully to latest firmware 1.33.98

No mate, you are wrong again. As i said before , RTL9210A - NVME ONLY, RTL9210B- SATA+NVME. All of them come in different packageings hence the -something.
And to finish this once and for all below pictures of 2 of my enclosures NVME ONLY- RTL9210.

As i told you before, variations of the chipset are A and B and in your case on B variation they did not enable sata for some models witch is normal.
I wanted to show you that i do have also older ones and not just B models and for those firmware stops at 1.29.12
B variant and it's variations are the only ones that got fw upgrades lately.

As i had at had 3 of my cases with B model , all are marked on chips with B letter at the end of the model as you can see in the next pictures and all of them are detected as B by the flasher.

Like this you can see the clear difference between A and B chips from RTL9210 and these 2 generations can't be crossflashed.

And to return at our previous discussion, NO, you can't crossflash ASM2364 firmware into ASM2362 because the downloader application will not let you, no matter the version.... and i did try all 3 of them available public. If someone did make this crossflash i am also curious what other means were used to do it.

For now this is the last public version for ASM2362, - 210527_81_00_00, but out there it is known to be another firmware, newer, 220906_81_45_00 should be the firmware customized by Micron for ASM2362

in that case its a lockout from flashing from xxxxxx_81_00_00 to xxxxxx_91_00_00 in the updater then
the actual firmware is fine try another flasher version older/newer

Nope, it is not working as i said before. tested with all 4 versions of flashers and with multiple versions of firmware including the custom ones 8D_XX_XX so none of the firmwares from ASM2362 do not accept the firmware from ASM2364

Hello, does anyone have the original dump file of the m2pv-c3 box? For some reason, while copying, it slows down every 3 seconds, waits for 1 second and continues. I bought it before flashing the firmware, but I noticed later that the file was deleted, now I can't go back to the original version because I can't find the dump file and which version it came with? Does anyone have this box and have the same problem? I'll have to send it to the warranty

Tested Firmware;
1.32
1.33
1.33.98
1.23

The correct firmware on that box is 1.32.49

Don't chase higher numbers if things work fine.

Thank you Do you have the dump file? Also, the dump file that came out of the stock box?

Not that I can remember because the flashes have always worked for me, half a dozen times already since this unit is always on sale.

I can tell you the original firmware was 1.23.15 from 2020.11.16, Orico never changes their old firmware. I took note because no matter when I bought it, through different packaging changes the factory firmware never changed.
