If done correctly, it'll work quite well. Just require 2fa from the same 2fa provider for each login, and used in conjunction with your ID to verify identity.Have there been any downsides or backfires to this? Does Demark age-gate certain websites with it? What do they do with the data that is collected? Or is it a "blind" 2FA that just exchanges tokens? I could see something like that becoming blackmail fodder quickly if used by the wrong people.

I'm not even sure how that's supposed to happen. The US/Florida doesn't do any kind of content control on ISPs so I don't know in what form the enforcement is supposed to take.So, uh... what about all the other porn sites on the internet?
Buy the token from whom? Whoever sells the token has your private information. I suppose the state could set up some sort of official agency to distribute the tokens and keep the private information secret. At least until they get hacked. But even then, what would keep a person under 18 from using the token number of someone who is over 18? You could make it illegal, but the only way to prosecute it would be to get the token ID from the internet provider, then go to the the IP of where it was used from and make sure the legitimate ID holder was in fact there when they supposedly logged on.Need another option. I think real age gating on the internet is needed. There also needs to be a secure system to do this without tracking, which is obviously not requiring you to submit a government ID.
I could see basically buying a secure token that the website can ping that says "Is this person over X" and the website gets a "yes/no" answer. Could also be used to enforce age-gating of social media and other online data collecting of children.
