Hmm, seems to be back up for me... Was getting the banned banner this morning... (website, don't use the app)
/shrug

Either they moved the webserver or they are ignoring the ban now?

well I mean TikTok now is one of the biggest current political topics going on. It is what it is.
Then it doesn't belong in the OT, Otay?

Leave the moderating up to the moderators, Otay?

I never used tiktok, but can't someone just go there in a browser? Is the whole site banned or just the app?
Looks like only the apps were pulled.
Google Play - "We're sorry, the requested URL was not found on this server."

I have no problem landing a browser on TT, though I only accidentally end up there once in a while in a desktop browser and never had their app on my phone, so can't tell what the *normal* user experience is.

The thing that puzzles me is why couldn't (didn't, already) TT just whip up a US version of the app that avoids the security concerns?

Maybe the security concerns are the main point of the service and the other bits are just bait?

^ I'm thinking they know that they reached critical mass and weren't really going to be effectively banned (even on a phone, you can probably still get there using the phone browser, unless all ISP's get onboard the ban-train, out of fear of fines, then the kewl kids will just find some VPN to get the job done), so why leave anything on the table if they can continue mining user info?

They might even have developed an alternate app already, if it came down to needing it.

TikTok is already hosted on Oracle's cloud, so most of the user data is easily within continental access to both the creators and consumers. Yes, ByteDance controls the algos and development back in China; but there's no reason to constantly move terabytes of data back and forth just for normal consumption.

During Trump 1.0, TikTok was willing to ensure all user content stayed within the U.S., but they never completely finalized that agreement with the feds/Oracle. But that's before the specific law banning them was passed last year. It will be incredibly hard for Congress to pass legislation reversing the previous bill; literally dozens of lawmakers would have to change their votes.* It's somewhat more likely that DJT will just wave his hands and either claim he won't enforce that law (this has huge legal problems for the Internet infrastructure companies), or he could broker some kind of truce where TikTok seemingly makes some key changes and he declares them in compliance. Obviously if Leon bought all of TikTok, that would suffice but in theory there could be middle ground too.

Note that 60% of ByteDance is actually owned by a lot of western VC firms:

* I suppose it's not that difficult for the GOP to do whatever Trump tells them to do.

wow, bytedance owns tiktok so the ban also applies to the games they own. Marvel Snap digital card game which is a US company but owned by bytedance was included. says unavailable in your region. this literally kills the careers of some streamers and yt channels.

they playin hardball now.

The short version is:

1. Nearly 50% of Americans actively use Tiktok
2. Anyone can hit record with no special IT or video editing skills, which means you can build up a niche following in the millions
3. Brands will provide sponsorships, i.e. pay you to feature their product or service

Sample pay rates:

Payments by follower count:

* Nano Influencers: (1,000 – 10,000 followers) A nano influencer specializing in local gourmet food reviews may earn $150 per video to feature a new restaurant.
* Micro Influencers: (10,000 – 100,000 followers) A micro influencer known for her DIY home decor tips might charge $500 per video to promote a new line of eco-friendly paint.
* Macro Influencers: (100,000 – 1 million followers) A macro influencer who focuses on fitness and wellness could earn $3,000 per video to participate in a fitness challenge sponsored by a sports brand.
* Celebrity Influencers: (1 million+ followers) A celebrity influencer famous for comedic content might command $20,000 to integrate a brand into one of their skits.

That means that if you do ONE brand deal a day as a Macro Influencer, you can make a pretty good living! Imaging placing a billboard for protein shakes on the highway vs. outside the entrance to a gym: you're getting highly-targeted ads, but with Tiktok, it's nationwide & even worldwide, through organic marketing to the exact audience you want. There is:

1. Brand deals & sponsorships
2. Tiktok Creator fund
3. Live sessions where user gifts are monetized
4. Tiktok Shop commission

Going viral & getting even 100k followers means you can make a decent amount, depending on your content & work ethic:

Plenty of people are out there making a living with short-form content! It's a top funnel for discovery due to the great algorithm:

I mean it when I say that I think that Tiktok is the greatest educational platform in the world:

School should be taught Tiktok-style

It's kind of mind boggling how much money that thing makes. I really would not have guessed it was that big. Would have figured that ad blockers would have killed that business model a long time ago.

Worldwide, 1.69 billion monthly active users, with an average of 58 minutes a day spent in the app. Brand partnerships means most of the ads ARE the videos themselves.

^ They are still nerdy losers, just never had a chance to develop their lizard brains enough to realize it because always being fed with BS.

Difference is, back in the day, nerdy losers at least had some scholastic abilities, but today, what are they going to do when the internet bubble bursts and there are too many content sources for any to take as large a slice of the pie? Being cute and amusing usually has an age-related shelf life.

More importantly, fsck Tik Tok, DSLReports just ceased to exist.

I can kinda see how it's addicting, I sometimes fall into the trap on Youtube and Facebook since they have short videos too. I get so annoyed at the construction ones though because they do so many things wrong. Pretty sure it's on purpose so they can get engagement in the comments. My favourite recent one was someone using a framing nailer to install a door. Door strike, hinges, everything. Framing nailer. Good luck adjusting anything in the future.

The trend I absolutely hate though is the click baity ones where they lead you to think something is going to happen, and then they don't even show what happens. Like what's even the point? That's when I get annoyed and turn it off and do something else.

So uh, Tiktok got a lobotomy. No livestreams, which I'm guessing they're saving for the inauguration tomorrow. Rumors are that they switched to Meta servers during the shutdown. May be a good time to invest in Facebook lol.

YouTube is a minefield, but I've found enough good creators that I always have a lot to watch. It's been huge in getting me into chemistry and woodworking. Unfortunately chemistry creators take about 6 months to make a video and my backlog is running out.

I still find this stat incredibly dubious.

This is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. Maybe for specific people with your brand of neurodivergence, but certainly not for the broader mass of kids.

Kill the 'tube too.
You're like a Vogon, "I'm miserable so I don't see why anyone else should have a good time either".
