Got the news today that I'll be joining the IT Leadership team as its newest (and youngest) Director. And we're a big org so we don't just hand out those titles like some places - you need to have a good amount of staff, budget, and experience dealing with complex situations and technology.

More than a little uncertainty with tariffs, the pause in federal funding, and a tiny little question of 'what now for my career because I'm pretty sure I don't want to be a CIO' but those are all questions for tomorrow. Today was a good day

Good day? You didn't even have to use your AK?

Congrats

I'm at the top of my pay grade and don't want a promotion, and before I say something controversial in meetings, I mention that. It's very freeing and it's okay to get the job you want and be happy with it. If you like being a Director, there's nothing wrong with staying there.

Congrats...I guess. I quit two otherwise good jobs when they tried to force me to become a foreman. The extra money was NOT worth the extra headaches.

Congrats!

Some folks excel at people mgmt, budgeting, leadership, training and all the other BS that comes with a leadership role.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the congrats everyone!

Congratulations! And let's give a warm welcome to our new CIO who will have new requirements and no budget!

Yeah I left printers behind long ago never to return. I did enough printer support to still hold a grudge over a decade later

Totally get that but I'll need to adjust personally. Its been a relatively quick rise for this organization and there was always a little bit of a goal/drive towards this in the background. To not want to go further is a change for me that I'll have to adjust to as it feels weird

There are certainly days when I rethink my decision to go into a supervisory role - usually when someone completely fails at being an adult at work and also doesn't recognize that failure.

Congrats!

I have gotten to do a lot of setting the direction for my teams and the work that we do. I enjoy the chances to survey the landscape and decide "We should do in that direction" and I should be able to do even more of that now

Congrats and good luck on your new position! Curious, how many staff are you responsible currently vs. what you'll be in your new position?

Congrats! You've got about 12 months before you start losing your ability to do actual IT work, and within 24 months you'll be submitting tickets just like all the other gits you used to support.

Navigating the Politics of "setting direction" is a tough one - you think X, Mgmt thinks Y - you do Y. You then have to sell your team on Y while not looking like a pussy ass bitch.

Ask me how I know...

When I was coding, a lot of us dreaded getting promoted to a management position. F### you, I ain't no SUIT!. It's just so hard to say no to the pay bump though - unless you start consulting. You get paid well but that could turn on a dime.

My wife worked with a guy who would answer the question, what do you do? He would say “Nothing, I don’t do anything, I am a manager.”

Congrats Ext. Hopefully there are stock bonuses commensurate with your new position.

I always said, "I'm a crane operator. I don't work.. I sit on my ass and watch other people work."

i am hoping to move to a new job (same company) that is more whole-system troubleshooting more than "this specific part broke" troubleshooting.

congrats!!
