The r/hardware mods have locked the subreddit for new posts (although that'll be over by the time I post this). They created a Blackwell Launch mega thread with "contest mode" enabled (comment order is randomized). And they're giving away steam gift cards to randomly selected users who post a comment saying why they want Blackwell.

This is basically astroturfing IMHO. Nvidia is paying users to say nice things about them.

NVIDIA is launching its RTX 5090 and 5080 officially today, and this thread will serve as a disucssion thread for the launch.
In preparation for the inevitable traffic, We'll lock the subreddit down for 2 hours and during that period, please utilize this thread for any of the discussion in regards to the launch.

Lockdown time: 08:00 am EST / 06:00 am PST and lasts 2 hours.

The subreddit will be on lockdown mode so you will not be able to post. You are of course entirely free to discuss everything about the launch in this thread - including but not limited to: Avalibility, Blackwell Architecture, Pricing, Performance and beyond.
Everything will return to normal from then and you're free to post 3rd party content from then-on.
In celebration of the launch, NVIDIA Community team were kind enough to provide us with a bunch of Steam Gift Cards in celebration of their launch - Winners will be drawn at random from qualified participants at the latest on Feburary 5th - we'll contact you then.
Just to be clear, We (i.e. the moderation team) are not getting anything in return and this is purely a token of gesture from NVIDIA, so please enjoy it
They also left the below message to the subreddit and how you win:

The availability day for the GeForce RTX 5090 and GeForce RTX 5080 has arrived!
To help celebrate, we’ve given the mods STEAM Gift Cards to distribute.
From 1/30-2/4, just comment on this thread with any of the following and you could find yourself with a DM from the mods delivering a code.
  • Reply with which new RTX technology you’re looking forward to, or which game / application you plans to use on the RTX 50 Series!

Reference Info:
GeForce RTX 5090 & GeForce RTX 5080 Out Now, Featuring Game-Changing AI and Neural Rendering Capabilities, and DLSS 4 With Multi Frame Generation

I don’t know, I said Turing wasn’t too great at ray tracing and made the comparison to how you probably shouldn’t buy the new series for “neural rendering” unless you already wanted to upgrade as by the time it’s standard in games you’ll be looking to upgrade anyway. I hard to turn notifications off because I was mobbed with endless arguments not really addressing my point. Maybe the general communities there just don’t have any nuance, but it’s obnoxious.

Yeah Reddit is a publicly owned page and they're always gonna be in it for the money.

If ATF had NV show up and say "hey we need you guys to slob NV's knob in one thread topic and we'll throw enough cash at ya to run the forums for the next 50 years" you'd bet your ass AT Forums would take the deal too.

We're just the smallest fish in the pond.

LMAO happened here over 20 years ago, before you registered. Nvidia leaned on Anand to make one of the shills from the Nvidia focus group a moderator. And got Rollo reinstated for a period of time. It was a 💩show and cost Anand and his team a lot of street cred. Nvidia has always played dirty pool. Nvidia compensating viral marketers is turn of the century stuff. I get a good laugh every time someone claims they don't pay for it anymore.

- Might have been lurking at the time, I remember the NV shilling and the Rollos/Happy Mediums etc...

Some folks even had to disclose they were on the take from NV in their signatures if I recall correctly.

Legends abound that Happy Medium is still out there somewhere, searching for the correct settings for his 2GB 960.

Oh of course not, it is a mutually beneficial relationship, see.
It is supposed to be an unbiased place, but the biases of some mods are crystal clear.
Shareholders, unquestionably. Not nearly as bad as the vendor specific place either, their supreme moderator is a true piece of work.
When the 5080 embargo lifted, they posted every review except HU.
Rent. Free.
No, it's just an NV shill central.
But it ain't as bad as B3D forums, where blackwell cope got so bad the Man Himself had to come in and a drop a mcnuke.

Truly midwit central, remember mediocrity is okay when NV does it!
They are entering their peak Intel phase, they just don't know it yet.

Oh, and don't get me started on the whole PCMR movement coinciding with Maxwell, and the fact all consoles were now all AMD.
Totally not a coincidence. Surely NV, the company that is legendary for hit pieces, refusing to take blame for engineering failures to their OEMs, creating useless SDKs just to make AMD perform worse in sponsored titles, GPP...
That is the tip of the iceberg.

Yup, part of the "agreement" was they had to put "Nvidia Focus Group Member" in their sig. Nvidia was strong arming reviewers decades before the "editorial direction" drama.

In response to the OP: As the expression has it - The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Another sign that the big green marketing machine is redlining the rpms, is when they are sampling channels with 75K subs. I guess we should be flattered they are even thinking about us.

Does the comment need to be positive or could I post something like "I want Blackwell . . . to have better performance, greater launch availability, lower prices, and more VRAM before I'd try to buy one myself, but I won't turn down a free card."?

Welp, my reddit account was shadow banned from r/hardware after I made a post there criticizing the Blackwell Launch thread.

The Pro-NV mods there should make like JHH and get a leather jacket, because it seems as though they have awfully thin skin.

It doesn't outright say that it needs to be positive. Though I can't think of a negative comment that fulfills the criteria. With paid user reviews, it's illegal to even imply that the review has to be positive to get the kickback. There aren't any laws like that against viral marketing, but it's still scummy imo.

I don't blame the mods too much for removing my post. It was a bit inflammatory, and they are just unpaid volunteers. I'm more frustrated over the original megathread. They are silencing criticism for the Blackwell product launch and there's no way to voice my concerns over that. I don't care to participate in any forum run like that.

And the shadow ban is ridiculous. I left a comment on an unrelated r/hardware post and it appeared to work, but then when I logout the comment isn't visible. If I open the permalink to the comment it says "removed by moderator".
