Fantastic Mr Fox - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432283/reference/

George Clooney stars as the voice of the animated Mr Fox, a former wild fox who has changed his ways since getting married, but still feels the call of the wild.

The protagonist, Mr Fox, is a douche.

this film: 7/10
Isle of Dogs: 7.5/10

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a work of genius! The casting was perfection and I absolutely loved the writing.

Solid 9 for me and one of Wes Anderson's best. Royal Tenenbaums & Rushmore are my other faves of his.

I need to see Isle of Dogs.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever - 7.5/10 (Now streaming on AppleTV+)

I love war movies, yeah, war movies and horror are my favorite genres so I was pleasantly surprised to stumble on this not well known film that came out in 2022.

Zac Efron stars and does a really good job of being the proud, lovable goofball friend to the end. He learns a lot, he gets humbled, and meets some interesting characters in this "road trip" movie. Russel Crowe appears for more than a few scenes and even Bill Murray shows up for 30-seoncds.

Peter Farrelly Directed and co-wrote this and the cinematography was excellent- Great scenery used in the Vietnam countryside, the flight scenes were solid and of course the Saigon scenes. Editing was pvery good to tell the full 360 story - its a lot to get into 130-minutes, only dragged in a few places.

Solid soundtrack as well. This was an early Vietname War movie so we didn't get the 70's "Fortunate Son" tracks, we got 60's music!

The Paragon - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27867099/reference/

Weird, quirky New Zealand movie paying homage to the surreal horrors of the 70s, it tells the story of average douch Dutch, who gets accosted by a mysterious woman in black who teaches him psychic powers, to seek out a mysterious crystal with powers to change the past.
There's more to it than it seems, and it's mostly a muted comedy, but not without some depth. It can be a bit hit or miss here and there, and maybe a touch too long, but it's ok overall, and certainly different than your typical hollywood fare.

Gladiator - 10/10

I hadn't seen this movie in a very long time so forgot some of the details. It is just a masterpiece. The music is also incredible. Watching this and refreshing myself on the story made Gladiator 2 even worse than I initially thought. I'd change my 5/10 rating of Gladiator 2 to like a 3/10 after watching this. It made stuff in part 2 make absolutely no sense. I also can't believe that the special effects in the first one are better than the second.

@purbeast0 - yes, loved Gladiator. I've started re-watching movies - something that I've never really done and unless you find every scene looking too familiar, it is well worth doing.

I think Gladiator hit cable around here and it's in the recorded stack. Might have to prioritize that one.

Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0861739/reference/

2007 Portuguese-language film about the exploits of BOPE (Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais, special operations police battalion), a "death squad" within Rio De Janeiro's police force, tasked primarily with the elimination, at all costs, of drug trafficking in the favelas.
Although it is based on real life, the plot is fictional.

Pretty fucking str0nk film about bad people killing other bad people. While BOPE are generally the good guys, the insanity of their life takes a toll, leaving a very fine line between justice and crime.
Late 90s Brasil was going through a severe push to move forward as a nation, and police and politicians cared very little how they did it, as long as they did. Adding in the ubiquitous corruption to the mix, even the police needs to steal, even just to be able to fund their own equipment.

Worth it if you want to watch a cops vs robbers film that isn't done in hollywood style; and, be warned, the violence is fucking brutal.

Would recommend. 7.5/10

I also watched the second film - Elite Squad 2 - The Enemy Within, with some of the same actors, focuses more on the political side of the game. It's allegedly the single highest grossing film of all time in Brasil, even over Avatar, but i didn't find it as entertaining. 6.5/10

I'm sure I'm not the only person that has said it but it is basically A Quiet Place without the sound gimmick with a nod to Critters 2. Stars Nicolas Cage who spends most of the movie unconscious.

i zipped through FROM. This is exactly the kind of nonsense i'm not willing to spend time on, there is no message, there is no discernible primary plot, there's just a nonstop stream of disposable characters to sacrifice to the weekly brainrot of entertainment.
After zipping through S01 i just read the spoiler for S02/03 on wikipedia and called it a day.

.. i already suspected it was bad from the near-incessant "the greatest show nobody's watching" articles that were popping up everywhere.

Don't watch it unless you want to see Kidman doing embarrassing stuff (embarrassing for her at her age).

Totally contrived story.

But hey, Kidman works her body the hell out! That was the only thing that made the movie tolerable.

4.5/10 (yeah watch it and prevent yourself from going, "yeah. no way that would happen in any universe").

Had to look this up. This is the 2nd movie she's been in recently where she's hooking up with a much younger dude. Can't remember the 1st one's name, but it had Zach Efron and was a romcom. Keith Urban must be getting old on her or something!

Romcoms are much easier to digest. This babygirl. Oof.

The Falcon and the Snowman 9/10 - (1985 - Now streaming on Tubi/Pluto/MGM+)

1985 film that tells the real-life story about two young guys in the mid 1970's who supply the Soviet's with intel. Adapted from a 1979 book of the same name.

Starring Timothy Hutton & Sean Penn who give excellent performances. The movie turns darker and darker as it descends into the absolute madness of anxiety as they continue to supply information to the Soviets for money.

Director John Schlesinger does a magnificent job in giving the viewer a look into the anxiety, despair, and paranoia that sets in. Music score was Bowie & Pat Methaney.

I watched Number 24 on Netflix last night. A story about the most decorated Norwegian in their history - a Nazi resistance fighter named Gunnar. Enjoyed it. Nothing mind blowing from the cinema side of things but a good movie and a really damn good yarn.

It was a few years ago, but Kidman looked incredible in HBO's Big Little Lies.

Borderlands 4/10 - Now streaming on Starz

Eli Roth wrote and directed this video game adaptation for the big screen. I never played the game so I went into this blind.

Stunning visuals, special effects were on point, great costumes, rich colors, and solid set design. Sound was pretty solid, over the top non-stop action noises.

Dialogue was atrocious, script was trash, editing was horrible, story did not flow well.

And the Claptrap character was beyond annoying. I've never been a Jack Black fan, OK he was solid in Jackal & Enemy of the State, but the voice work and script for this character was atrocious. Zero self-awareness by Eli Roth & Jack Black to turn this character into something serviceable.

Trash ass movie!

As I wrote, it wasn't what I expected, but I enjoyed it. The girl turned out to be a better plot twist than anything Shamalamadingdong has done since - I see dead people.

Watched Pitch Black for the first time in 15yrs? Man this movie aged well. 8.5/10 No wonder we got a kickass video game, and a good sequel. If you didn't like Chronicles 🖕

I did not just watch them, but will again highly recommend Locke and The Rover.
