Inflation coming in hot..reminds me of the 1983 song;

They talk about the US Inflation. I understand just a little, no comprende, it's a riddle.

I'm on a Mexican radio 📻

So far I haven't seen much in the way recent additional food price increases, but I will be for sure looking out.

I checked far out NET puts and was really quite surprised that the May 140s were fetching a decent price (like $600 a pop when I checked).

So I piled back in. NET I can't quit you baby.

This site tracks 18 food item prices (see top graph and use the dropdown selection tool to select different foods). Mostly in 2025 it is coffee, eggs, and ice cream going up. But, 2025 has just started and anything tariff related hasn't had a chance to work its way through the system yet. https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/08/business/tracking-us-food-prices-eggs-dg/index.html

Inflation coming in hot..

You know I'm not sure how to see this.. but then again I'm not an economist.

Everyone says we have a bubble and values are inflated..

But on the other hand we have crazy inflation?

Doesn't that balance out?

I have no clue, all I know is prices keep going up like insurance for homes and cars. Unstoppable semi-annual 20%+ increases (40%yr). My car insurance went from 1200yr to 2200yr in 30 months ..and that's actually the cheapest available. The big names want 2800yr.

Yeah I'm quite pissed off with that.

Got quite a shock last year.

My car insurance is $1200/yr with a normal company, and I have full coverage with a $1k deductible. There might have been a modest uptick - like $40/yr, but largely haven't seen anything. The biggest increase occured when we got a new car to replace a 10 year old vehicle. My renters insurance has remained the same price for 7 years.

What and how are you driving? And have you opted out of your car spying on you and reporting it to insurers?

Not all regions are the same. CA and FL home and car ins is unaffordable to the point even Powell mentioned it in a speech recently that people might not be able to even get a mortgage. TX is also being sucked up in the massive increase vortex. Reinsurers (like Lloyd's of London) are demanding it.

And yes I dropped the car tracking last year to no avail.

No accidents since 2005 and one ticket in 2020.

I currently have liability only since my 22 Tucson is worth only about 19k wholesale. That was only 880yr.

I may get full coverage again through Hartford but it's not pressing at the moment.

Some markets have added caps to increases, so insurers are increasing prices in other areas to cover their losses due to climate-driven events. So some people are just going to get hosed because some governments want to stick their heads in the ground and pretend everything is fine climate-wise, and no tradeoffs exist.

Mine was up $250 last year.. liability only.

But I live in NYC and barely drive 100 miles a month so it's the lowest around.

A penny stock I had completely written off (I own 3000 shares) is SENS.

I was sure it was headed for oblivion and bottomed out at .25 but it's now back over a dollar. I think I read somewhere that it has an average price target of over $2.

Oh forgot about the eggs. I don't mind eggs but that's something I just don't eat. At least it doesn't seem to be affecting Chicken.

I don't think anyone gave SENS a chance to come back.

My account popped big time the past few months but it was mostly because of NET and I didn't take the time to sort through the debris of crap I still have in there. I figured for years SENS was headed for tax write-off territory.

When I first saw it I was sure it was due to a reverse split but I was wrong lol.

Never give up Never give up (can anyone name that movie?).

It is "Never give up, never surrender". My bad.
Great movie btw.

However - the sentiment remains the same.

^Welp, all I can say is, money quickly made is usually money quickly lost.

I got a good ass kicking so far this year myself. My high speculation trades have me down about 89%. 😱

<- Quickly checks S&P500 index recommended by just about any financial advisor. Yep, up 4.09% so far this year.

Get rich slowly, virtually guaranteed. Slowly gained riches are not exciting. They do not scratch any of those gambling itches, or desires to beat the system, or whatever. But they work, over and over and over again.

Sorry to hear about your loss though.

I've been staying out of individual stocks now and just doing VUN.TO index fund. I'm at almost 3k now in there after around 1 year. Showing about 11% return.

Got out of the company ESP too, even though that has traditionally been my best investment and it's actually what enabled me to buy my land. With cost of living increasing year by year, I can't afford to contribute to it anymore. The stock is also not doing all that great, all the telcos are struggling right now due to the economy. I have money in it so I'm hoping it goes up so I can take it out. In the meantime I'm still getting dividends.

I have around 2 years left on the mortgage so once that's paid off that will give me more breathing room and I'll invest more at that point.

SMCI is looking tempting. I currently have no position. Still has the delisting risk :

If they dont file the missing report by month end it could go back under $20.

Yep I do firmly believe in the index fund strategy but like some of you do 70/20/10 strategy.. I don't believe in emerging markets/ world stock market.

So I shifted that 10 to some stocks that I thought would grow long term. Besides that 10% would more than scratch my itch and not lead me to financial ruin.

I'm up 4.45% (if I had just invested 3 days later - I invested the friday before deep seek.. I'd be better off).

So timing the market does work or suck depending on how you look at it!

ESP programs are rarely "good" long-term investments. Most recommendations I've ever seen is to take the discount and immediately sell to get a nice little return, even if it is taxed at ordinary rates. Long-term, they're bad because you have both your savings and salary in a single company, and you miss out on the opportunity to more broadly invest. While your company stock has suffered, the markets as a whole have been in a tear.
