Amazon is removing the ability to download Kindle books to your PC. If you want to archive you books to you PC you need to do it before the 26th. Going forward I won't be purchasing Kindle books or ereaders.

Starting February 26, 2025, the “Download & Transfer via USB” option will no longer be available. You can still send Kindle books to your Wi-Fi enabled devices by selecting the “Deliver or Remove from Device” option. Learn more about managing downloads

I'd never own a kindle book. I fucked up and bought an audible book once. Dunno why my brain shut down for that purchase. Took me awhile to hunt down cracking it. It was a multi step process, and my very last audible book. DRM can go to hell.

Great post! I put this in a thread on P&N yesterday but this is much better.

The easiest way is to download the PC or MAC app and then download from there. You can do one book at a time but it's super fast. I did that to 150 books yesterday - as I want to rid my life of Amazon altogether and that's my last connection to that fucking company. Hopefully get a Kobo for Christmas! FUCK BEZOS!

although I will have to get Amazon Prime to binge the Boys Season 5 and another show. but whatever, can't be perfect.

Sorry, I did not see that topic in P&N. I still have yet to figure out how to download in bulk. I think you may be able to make a collection and download 25 at a time. I also want to strip away the drm. The problem I have is I grabbed a ton of free books so I have nearly 8000 books. I wish I could sort them by the ones I paid for.

Oh no I didn't make a topic. I just posted the info in an already existing thread.. That's why your way is better!

Seems like Amazon offers me a 30-day free Prime trial about twice a year. If you don't need instant viewing gratification, you could binge for free.

My wife finally agreed to cancel Prime because she realized Bozos sucks. Then I looked at my 5% Chase prime card and saw $800 cash back for the past 12 months, mostly from Whole Foods bills. She definitely won’t give that place up.

Anyway, real books from local book stores are the way to go

$308/week doesn't seem too outrageous. I'm a bit over $100/week, and I shop discount places mostly, and don't really buy meat. It's also just me and the cats.

Didn’t seem like that much to me either. We could save maybe 30% by going to Market Basket but I’d pay a lot more than 30% extra to not set foot in there. We don’t hesitate to buy nice ingredients — if I’m bothering to cook it’s going to turn out good.

Plus once you go $13/gallon grass milk you can’t go back

Yeah I can't quit Whole Foods either - so that is my one Bezos tie. We have no good large natural focused grocery chains around here besides them. It sucks. Wegman's might have at least some of the options but it's still more of a piecemeal solution - and the nearest one is 45 min away with no traffic. Would love a Sprove market to open up around here. The regular grocery stores around here like Shop-Rite suck for most things all-natural and healthy

Yeah I can't imagine actually having 16k of spending money. Must be nice. I have maybe a few k per year left over once I factor in all the bills and costs of living. Mortgage alone is about 15k in my case (600 biweekly). Any big ticket item I buy that's in the 1k range I had to save up for a year or more.

You know Whole Foods is a supermarket right? Upper end one, sure, but supermarket nonetheless.

I guess I misunderstood the context, thought we were talking about spending that on amazon prime purchases. That's what I get for skimming the thread real quick. Carry on.

Thankfully I don't support the Kindle ecosystem, although they have occasional great deals on books.
Tried to manually download the few titles in my account, but Amazon wouldn't allow it.

You do not have any compatible devices registered for this content. Buy a Kindle or get the free Kindle reading app.

I don't think I care enough to install the Kindle app onto my phone or tablet just to download a dozen ebooks.

Can I download all my Kindle content en-masse? I have quite a few items. Or do I need to do it one at a time?

Any hints on the process?

Also, what are the reasons to download them?

Also, why are they doing this? To prevent people from sharing titles?

I have some things on my Kindle that I didn't purchase from Amazon, mainly (or entirely) PDFs of one form or another. I download them to my PC from whereever and connect my Kindle via USB to PC and copy/paste into the Kindle Documents folder. They are accessible like any other content on my Kindle Paperwhite Version 2, bought in Nov. 2014. They don't support the dictionary functionality, i.e. highlighting a word in a Kindle purchase brings up a definition, but not in a PDF.

I'm pissed at Bezos too, in particular for his refusing to endorse Kamala at WAPO. I also have a big grudge with Amazon for obliterating the customer comments to others' reviews of products a few years ago. That was infuriating!

I keep getting offers from Amazon for a free month trial of Prime and I refuse every time. I still do a lot of business there but only when it appears to be the best option for me financially. I don't assume Amazon has the best price, they very very often don't even come close.
