Question Disabling resources - freeing up interrupts possibly MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI

Hello,

I have an MSI motherboard that was working until I updated the firmware. It has a RAID card in it that worked until the firmware update. After the update, I can't get into the bios or windows - just and endless loop until I remove the card. In the website about the motherboard it mentions disabling the nvme and other thing but in the bios in advanced it doesn't seem to be an option, just auto or type - no disable. I could be looking in the wrong place. I can contact MSI but I figure I'll get a faster answer here as I'd love to finish this tonight

What RAID card is this? It is possible that you might have to mask one of the PCIe pins. I had to do that for a SAS card for it to let my X99 board post.

Thanks.. I have an 3154-16i and a h755 - both worked before I upgraded the firmware. I was able to control them from within the motherboad bios. I wasn't doing any masking or anything fancy before the bios upgrade on the motheboard. Both already had the latest firmware.

What was the reason for updating the BIOS? Was something else not working correctly? Why not go back to the previous BIOS version? I'm not a fan of updating things just for the sake of updating. If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Have you checked the UEFI / Legacy options? I know before I bit the bullet on converting from MBR >> GPT every update meant toggling back to CSM mode to boot.

For some reason that motherboard takes a long time to post - I thought maybe that would fix it. There are some systems that don't like being "downgraded" so I'm waiting for MSI to talk to me before I do anything like revert.

The windows boot disk is gpt. I tried CSM - a lot of things didn't work.

Define "long". How much RAM do you have?

About 40 seconds before you'd see the MSI logo. 64GB. Maybe more - hard to say - once it got to the logo it only took a few seconds to starting Windows and windows would load in about 4 or 5 seconds. My older motherboards only take a few seconds to get to the logo and load windows so i'm surprised a newer motherboard took this long. Since the bios update it is down to about 20 seconds which is still a long time IMHO

That's normal now. DDR5 takes longer to boot because the system is checking the RAM timings and configuration. The more RAM you have, the longer it takes.

Hmm, if it was working before on the same board, sounds like something in the update or a change in settings is causing trouble. Hopefully MSI can help with information on how to fix it.

What bios version did you flash to, do you know the AGESA version? On ASUS, I know the latest BIOS isn’t exactly stable. I have seen this on 2 different boards. One black screens on a reboot until CMOS is cleared. The other just randomly throws a code and stops POSTing.

I would start by downgrading the BIOS.

I had whatever version was august 2024 when I started. There are some systems that don't like being "downgraded" so I'm waiting for MSI to talk to me before I do anything older bios.

Even if the board didn't "like" downgrading the BIOS version, it has a BIOS Flashback button, so you could always reflash to the latest one.

I have tried manually setting the PCI version for that slot - same issue. I have discovered that using either raid card which worked with the old bios and work on other computers the onboard video will not work in ANY slot (video card removed). It will work without the card. I have also tried with a cheap no power 1gb video card and the on board video disabled as far as I can tell and it still won't boot.

I spent a LOT of hours trying out every CMOS config and bios version I could find. After nearly 16 hours of different options, I got an email from MSI - they said they haven't heard anything about issues so the problem is on my end. I switched the motherboard with one from another manufacturer and the albatross of MSI is gone - never ever ever ever ever again. Even if by chance I got a defective motherboard their concern and effort and quick reply after 2 weeks was enough to convince me of where the issue is.
