That's it... keep prolonging the instability. Businesses and the market just LOVE that kind of thing.Trump now says that Mexico/Canada tariffs are getting moved to April 2.

Infrastructure Week, Electric Boogaloo
Catch up quick: Trump told reporters on Wednesday that the 25% tariff on imports from North American allies would take effect on April 2.
Context: April 2 is the deadline for reciprocal tariffs that Trump previously announced, a senior White House official clarified to Axios.
- Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick quickly added that the "big transaction" would be April 2, but the "fentanyl-related" tariffs would be re-evaluated at the end of the 30-day pause on March 4.
- That official added that the 25% tariffs specific to Canada and Mexico were still on pause until next week, as originally thought. The administration has not made a decision whether to extend that pause or not.
- Lutnick told reporters that the Canadian and Mexican officials had to "prove to the president" that they had made progress on tighter border controls.
The copper gets processed in China on the way to the US. The US has sufficient domestic production but sends copper concentrate to China for smelting. The US has unused smelting capacity but it’s cheaper to ship US concentrate to China and ship back the copper. There is a fully permitted major copper smelter idled in Arizona since 2018. The Mexican company that owns the smelter shut it down to break the union. He announced ones coming on copper soon which we mostly import from Peru and Canada. No idea what his hard on for metals is about.

The stranglehold China has on multiple metal supplies is a cause for concern. The Biden administration took many actions to encourage domestic production. Trump is doing his typical surgery by hand grenade.

My gripe with current US policy is that we give our copper from public lands to foreign mining companies for free, no royalties. A royalty scheme that provided high royalties for shipped concentrate and reduced royalties for processing copper in the US would go a long way to breaking China’s grip. As things stand, foreign mining companies mine US minerals, ship them abroad for processing, send the profits home, and leave the US to deal with the mess.Is Trump even aware of this? I suspect not.
He's probably just seeing that we import X amount of copper.
I do like how he's cracking down on the fentanyl cartels though.
That needed to be done
That sounds all great for indonesia, but everyone is ignoring a huge factor with copper, or rather any raw metal ore processing, smelting etc, and that is the severe hazardous impact to the envirement, specially the contamination to the land. A good example that I have watched first hand, is the Kaiser Mead Aluminum Smelter in Spokane Wa. It closed in 2000, as part of their restructering after Bankruptcy, as the cost to run and maintain was not sustainable. 25 years, and three different owners of the land later, the land is still unusable because of the contamination cleanup, that is so extreme and to costly to complete. It's been stripped of salvagable material, with the rest of the structures just decaying and falling apart. I don't know if, or when it will every be usable again for anything meaningful. My gripe with current US policy is that we give our copper from public lands to foreign mining companies for free, no royalties. Note: Indonesia, home to one of the largest copper mines on Earth, requires ore to be processed in country, no ore or concentrate exports. It keeps the high value activity in country.
Unfortunately, many of those Japanese, Korean, and European cars are made in the USA, and exported to Canada and Mexico. Could the supply chain be changed to having them brought directly from Japan, Korea, and Europe? Sure...but it would take a lot of time.In Europe people are already boycotting Tesla cars: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/general/ar-AA1zIQX9
Same thing will happen with US automobiles like Ford, GM, Chevrolet, Dodge....etc in Canada and Mexico if Trump follows through on the tariffs. People will simply stop buying American cars, and buy European and Japanese cars instead
I grew up in Spokane. We used to swim at a place near Mead where Kaiser dumped heated water to flow into the river. Made for warm swimming. I had a great-uncle who worked nearly his entire career in the Kaiser Trentwood rolling mills. That sounds all great for indonesia, but everyone is ignoring a huge factor with copper, or rather any raw metal ore processing, smelting etc, and that is the severe hazardous impact to the envirement, specially the contamination to the land. I'm just wondering if the status of tariffs are above or below "the concept of a plan".Trump now says that Mexico/Canada tariffs are getting moved to April 2.

Total Cost of Ownership. People are afraid that parts is going to skyrocket with tariffs at some point. Why would they stop buying trucks from the Ontario Truck Plant? That is cutting the nose to spite the face. Can't comment on GM, Chrysler, and Jeep. Never work for them.
Oh but wait till you have to replace a part. Seems they like to keep them overseas.Unfortunately, many of those Japanese, Korean, and European cars are made in the USA, and exported to Canada and Mexico. So we are kinda part of the same Kaiser family. I have lived in Spokane since 1986, where My Dad (Step dad since 1983), retired from Trentwood in 2016 after 42 years, but he suffered the "Kaiser Curse" and died in 2019 from cancer. The "Kaiser Curse" is dying within 3 years after retirement or before retirement as it seems a lot of long term Kaiser employees use to do. Anyhow, I went to work at Trentwood 3 months after he retired, after almost a decade of applying, where am currently at, and most likely will retire from. That is if retirement is even an option by then. I do NDT ultrasonic testing. His dad also worked his entire career and retired out there. I also know people who worked at the mead plant prior to it closing.I grew up in Spokane. We used to swim at a place near Mead where Kaiser dumped heated water to flow into the river. The fucking moron doesn't even realize that a lot of the fentanyl comes thru the USPS and thru our ports, not just Mexico and Canada, and those that does come thru those boarders, cross at boarder entry points. It's our responsibility (US customs) to check and verify cargo entering, which they are obviusly failing at, not only at the boarders, but thru ports and such. But what can we expect, Trump doesn't know how to take responsibility, and only knows how to blame everyone else, making it their problem. Not that the fentanyl problem is his doing, but he is responsible for the process, or lack there of, of trying to stop it.
