What is an illegal protest? Why are protests by Nazi's and white nationalists allowed? Why were the protests on J6 legal? Don't students have a 2A right to protest Israel and their policies?

If I had to guess, illegal protests would be any protesting done by brown people, or non brown people who are protesting in support of brown people. And as crazy as it sounds for me to say this, I believe it could get to a point where protesting against Trump could fall under being illegal.

Let’s be clear Trump already sees protests against him that way. Basically anything that isn’t pro Trump will be used as an excuse to cut funding.

Trump plans to cut all funding for universities anyway so the universities should tell him to eat a bag of dicks.
I wish my alma maters would use their vast listhosts to spam how the administration is hurting everyone instead of just "can we have more money?".

Sure is strange how all those conservative free speech warriors outraged by private companies exercising their free speech rights show so little outrage when confronted with an actual violation of the first amendment.
It's as if they never really cared about the Constitution or free speech.

It is endlessly annoying to me that when Twitter banned some people we had to have a long national conversation about free speech and when this happens there's barely a peep. Reminds me of Sarah Sanders where when she was politely asked to leave a restaurant we all had to talk about political civility as if the Trumpkins gave a single solitary shit about that.

It's bad faith the whole way down. Liberals actually value free speech and civility and conservatives know this, so when it's convenient conservatives pretend to value them too. As I always say though when conservatives pretend to believe in something we don't have to pretend to believe them.

That's also why the NYT oped page is infuriating: constantly platforming people arguing in bad faith. And then headlines in general that cover up all the ways conservatives act in bad faith.

Yep - I think I saw an NYT headline from the other day calling Trump's blatant violation of federal law, the Constitution, and binding court precedent as 'reimagining the powers of the presidency'.

Or Baker with his total nonsense puff piece about Canada becoming a state could be a good thing. Like, GFYS - it's a sovereign country and we shouldn't be entertaining and laundering these complete bullshit ideas.

As a side note, I'm sure laying off thousands of federal workers in extremely undignified ways, hurting all the associated economic activity with government spending and whatnot, and also starting a huge recession will do wonders for civil order.

There is a lot of money and attention to be had for people willing to sacrifice their integrity. The same thing is happening with birthright citizenship - there's a handful of right wing 'legal scholars' who are suddenly cooking up think pieces about how maybe the 14th amendment doesn't mean what it clearly says.

Based on what I've seen, it probably has origins from Kushner side of the house to stamp out pro Palestinian activities at colleges.

I'm assuming they will be pushing institutions to implement 'controls' around student demonstrations on campus building in language that is very specific to Israel.

Just like it's illegal in many states to boycott Israel, they probably push language that fed money is only available if colleges have a permit process in place and buried i. That process that states no protest can specify a religion and then using magic logic state that any demonstration against Israel is a demonstration against Judaism therefore permits must be disallowed.

Boom, any pro palestinian protest is now illegal based on magic logic.

They can then use that permit mandate to put pressure to stamp down on anti government protest that are unfavorable to the trump regime.

According to George W. Bush, the constitution is just a “god-damned piece of paper.” (allegedly)
Assuming he said it, he was right. The Constitution by itself means nothing - as I've said before if you go read the Soviet or North Korean constitutions they sound like great, liberal democracies that guarantee free speech and all sorts of other nice things. We know how that turned out.

The thing that keeps the Constitution working in America is a collective commitment to it. Unfortunately now, conservatives have discarded that commitment.
