California's Gavin Newsom opposes trans athletes in women's sports, splitting with progressives

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has spoken out against allowing transgender women and girls to compete in female sports.

This is an issue that in my opinion probably affects a very small number of athletes nationally but can be played by Republicans to turn off so many potential voters because, at least for me and I think many many others allowing women who can be thought of as born genetically men just plain gives them a natural advantage physically. Whether it does or does not I can’t see any way to disavow that suspicion that of a feeling level and that is the level at which people vote.

I have no use for Newsom personally, I see him as a pretty boy whose main appeal is physical rather than having a moral core more like I see in B Sanders, but I agree with his stance here.

I have a very different view of politics than what passes for Progressive these days which I would maybe call irrationally emotionally attached to stupid ideas that the one here and if you challenge them over they melt down emotionally like two year olds throwing tantrums.

Newsom would like to win elections. I'm in CA more often than I'm not. I saw 0 Harris signs leading up to the election and I saw a shit-ton of Trump signs in the valley. By and large the Mexicans here, and they're everywhere, have no love of former dudes beating up on women in sports no matter what their political bias is otherwise. It's a hot topic thanks to the Republicans and one that can no longer be ignored or ridiculed -- it's become relevant like it or not. Inclusiveness of trans people in sports is a hill to die on and Democrats are dying by the droves and Newsom evidently recognizes this. So yeah this shit affects a sub-percentage of the population yet probably 90% + of everybody has an opinion about it and are emotionally invested.

In general I agree with the notion...
However, in practice they will just attack someone on the next rung of the hate and bigotry ladder. Such as LGB or POC. Then making slaves out of Women, Taliban style. After that it'll be back to dividing up Whites over WHERE they were born. How they speak, how they look. If they are always 100% loyal or not.

Ask Amy Coney Barrett how loyal MAGA is to their own people.
Theirs is a raw seething hatred that will only end when they meet their end.
You can try appealing to the fabled independent with this... just don't expect MAGA to care one bit.

If someone can give me a compelling reason why someone born as a male should be allowed to compete as a female I'm willing to listen. As for extra Xs and Ys it gets more complicated I'm sure but if doctors think you're a female at birth I think they should be okay to compete as a female even if they are genetically more athletic.

Here's the thing though, how many Democrats have come out in support of trans females in female sports? This is yet another issue that stinks of "shit people say on social media is being portrayed as the default position of all Democrats despite very few, if any, actual politicians even weighing in on the topic."

Because in anything other than the most extreme circumstances this is just a trans kid, who's already having an incredibly difficult time in life, wanting to play their favorite sport. These aren't fully grown, fully developed men pretending to be women in order to dominate a sport. If that were the case where are the widespread examples of this happening? Who gives a fuck if some trans girl wants to play JV soccer or volleyball or whatever, especially if they're on blockers or hormones.

Its hard to believe that the premier issue of our time is a question of if we should inspect children's genitals. And that children who happen to be trans may want to play in the sport with the gender they identify with - a problem so small that it's hard to believe that both the Federal and State governments are expending so much time and energy on it. Apparently, all our other big problems are solved. Who knew?

Anyway, Gavin Newsom can go play in traffic. Throwing people under the bus for political expediency is gross, and it's not going to stop at trans rights. The right-wing kooks will just move onto the next target.

In that vein the right wingers will continue to use the issue as a wedge and it's incredibly powerful with the average MAGA voter. If the left wants to win elections they have to stop pandering to the .0001% because not only does it not win elections, it probably helped lose the last one. I'm fairly liberal and I hate seeing a guy win in womens sports. I'm sorry, but as such a small minority the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Get that shit through your thick heads unless you like sitting on the outside whining about how the country is losing because you care about literally 13 transgender athletes feelings across the country. The US won't be there in our lifetimes, we need to pick battles we can actually win.

This is where I don't understand why the Democrats never just clearly expressed something like: "yes we agree with Republicans that men shouldn't be in women's sports. Now lets discuss important things that we disagree about". Everyone is so afraid to appear as if they agree with the other team.

Start asking them to inspect the genitals of everyone in the room so they know they can comfortably use the bathroom without issue.

I agree it is simply not worth losing elections to satisfy a fraction of a fraction of a tiny fraction of the electorate. National Government doesn’t need to be involved in this issue.
I wish I could find the video, leading up to the election there was a news show with 5 or 6 Democratic strategists (no politicians) and one mentioned this topic which was basically he shouldn’t see his daughter being run over by a player who is substantially larger than her and was a boy a few years ago.
The panel went absolutely off the rails about that comment.
It was a wonderful summary about how a small topic can derail everything.
I don’t know much about Newsrom however he has the killer instinct and wants to win plus in his own works he wants to “get shit done”.
