Higher interest play a big factor here. They dramatically increase the value of the annuity that is the full prize.I knew you take a big hit by taking the lump sum, and then that sum gets taxed at a high rate as well, but JFC...walking away with less than 1/4 of the jackpot amount. Still a crazy sum, but damn. Feels like the advertised jackpots are false advertising lol.
I spent some time as a union business agent and organizer. I loved the guys who said, "I don't want to pay union dues." For the most part, union wages for the job they were doing was 30-50% higher...or more, PLUS the benefits package. I always told them that the difference between union wages and what they made was the "non-union dues."
Some people are completely stuck in a moronic mindset that their wage is something they did on their own and any deduction is something other people are doing to them, regardless of what benefits they are drawing from those deductions.I spent some time as a union business agent and organizer.
