Why do people swear that their school served grade E meat?

I have this co-worker that insisted that when he went to VCU about 10 years ago, he saw deliveries of packaged meat going to the cafe with the stamp "Grade E".

But when I bring up the fact that USDA doesn't grade meat with letters, he insisted that I was wrong because he saw it with his own eyes.

He went on to say that since everyone knows what grade F meat is for, you know how bad E is......

Gee whiz, talk about imaginative memory.....

Each USDA beef quality grade is a measure of a distinct level of quality -- and it takes eight grades to span the range. They are USDA Prime, Choice, Select, Standard, Commercial, Utility, Cutter, and Canner.

Well, my old school used to serve fairly low grade meat, and it is, arguably, the most famous school in the world.

I managed to sneak into the store-room for the kitchen one day - I found several boxes labelled:

Economy Burgers
1/8 lb

Ingredients: Meat


They did make up for it by serving prime roast beef on Sunday. Together with beer served in solid silver tankards.

At least his school served meat, whatever the grade.
I think I was an unwitting vegetarian from my school years.

Although we did go to school near a horse farm, now that I think about it...

It might not go well, we here all make fun of him for getting his latest news from a Mustang site.

I'm not going to soil snopes.com's good name. Perhaps I'll show him USDA's website.


*gawd*, he's going off now on how they closed down a local fast food join because the "camera" caught a former drag queen employee peeing in the mayo. He said that he used to eat there and it was during the AIDS scare.....

What school would that be? Most famous? Harvard?

USDA does grade *poultry* with letters. My university served "grade B, but edible" turkey for any dish where it wasn't whole portions, such as on turkey tetrazzini day.
Though "grade E" is unrealistically low for even that standard, as A is generally whole bird items, B&C for "ready to cook" portions.
