Ford suspended the electricity duty pending a meeting with Lutnick on Thursday. Canadian Finance Minister also to be present.

Hell of a way to run the world's largest economy.

Soon to be former world's largest economy!

sneaky fucking bastards

Kind of insane to slip in a poison pill to protect tariffs that no one really wants. Complete death cult behavior.

Man, who'd have thought a guy with the business acumen to have so many failed ventures could have a rough time with the levers for an economy?

article:

In a series of meandering posts to his Truth Social platform, Trump said Ontario "will pay a financial price for this so big that it will be read about in History Books for many years to come!"
LOL

He also said he would declare a "National Emergency on Electricity" within the American regions impacted by Ontario's electricity levity, presumably referring to New York, Michigan and Minnesota.

Trump then launched into a lengthy rant about the U.S. annexing Canada to make it "our cherished Fifty First State."

He also threatened to "substantially increase" tariffs on auto imports on April 2, which Trump predicted would "permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada."
keep digging that hole Trump. Canada will just harden its resolve.

Maybe Carville's play possum is right..

Let them hang themselves.

- I'd agree if it weren't for all the shit for brains Dems voting to approve trump appointments.

"Don't interrupt your enemy when they're making a mistake" is 100% a viable strategy, but "Helping the enemy make a mistake that is going to fuck over a lot of people" isn't.

I'm thinking the Trump party will likely pass the CR just by themselves.
and they did lol with one democratic vote too. guaranteed the Dems let it pass in the Senate also. They have no balls. The leadership likes their cozy easy lives and corporate consultant class three martini lunches.

- No, it would be suicide for Dems to force a government shutdown while simultaneously complaining about DOGE cutting government (and complaining about Republican obstructionism in prior sessions).

Get the bare minimum number of dems required to pass it from contested districts/states and then get the fuck out of the way as the freight train of FAFO comes through.

Yeah sure you could do that or actually grow a fucking spine and learn how to message and say you're not passing any Republican Bill until it protects Medicaid Medicare and social security, and even add in that you're going to protect from Doge.

Super simple message. Thanks most Americans would agree. But the Democrats don't have the balls and they don't even know how to do it or even message something that simple.

Except this wasn't a "clean CR" and it prevents the House from taking action on Trump's tariffs that everyone hates. If the Republicans want to pass their odious agenda, they should do it on their own.

However, Democrats don't necessarily have to message on being "pro-shutdown". Let Republicans take the blame for not being able to pass their agenda or a budget on their own when they control both houses.

And it's not hypocritical at all for Democrats to stand up here: DOGE "cuts" are illegal impoundment that are anti-constitutional. That's not the same thing as a government shutdown at all (and again, shutdown would be Republicans' fault - they hold the majorities; they don't need Democrats to pass garbage) or Congress cutting funds via appropriations bills.

lol Trump saying that companies who say they need clarity on trade are basically bullshitting. Yeah they can't make major capex decisions without knowing if he's gonna render them uneconomical like an hour later. Everybody is going to hunker down for the next four years and he will have caused the world's dumbest recession.

Herbert Hoover gives two big thumbs up.
Surely the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 will work this time!
The 1930s were just amazing, right guys?

Getting a little warm in here, can we open the windows for Wall street? Just want them to enjoy themselves for all the effort they put into electing Mr. Tariff.

- Dems would get butchered on the messaging anyway. The reasons for blocking are too complicated and the consequences of blocking are too obvious. It would be "we're hurting you for your own good, don't you see" that the Dems need to avoid.

Joe Dumbfuck has the intelligence of a goldfish and enough spite in his heart to kill an elephant. "Dems cause government shutdown" is all most people would need to take all the Trump hate momentum away and direct it right back on Democrats.

Recession? Market Collapse? Bizarro World government cost cutting? Ukraine getting backstabbed? Suddenly there is a straight line between "obstructionist dems shutdown government" and all the world's problems and Joe Dumbfuck would eat that shit right up.

Actually I don't think it's just that hard to message, if you were even just medium competent.

I don't think it's hard to message at all. And people are going to criticize Democrats anyway, no matter what they do. Might as well be on the right side.

But to entertain the idea of "hard to message" - plenty of things to choose from:

1) Stopping lawless presidency that is illegally and corruptly holding onto taxpayer money instead of spending it. Democrats are happy to help pass budgets when there are guardrails put in place to make sure the appropriated money is spent as The People decided
2) Republicans have majorities - they can pass it all on their own - no Democratic party help needed
3) Democrats proposed a real, clean CR to allow for further negotiation - Republicans shot that down
4) Republicans are in favor of keeping Trump's tariffs (which they snuck into the CR)
5) The "CR" Republicans pushed through has a steep budget cut for DC and a few other areas - defunding teachers, police, and other services in DC.

Plus, if people are so dumb, you can make something up that's anchored in the truth: DOGE is so reckless they broke the government and it shutdown.

The Republicans are sneaking in corrupt wish list items into a government funding bill to protect the lawlessness of the Trump administration, and refusing to protect Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. So we will not support this corrupt bill. We are trying to protect these vital programs for Americans, Trump is busy hawking Tesla's for the world's richest man instead, because that's who he'd rather help.

That's it. That's the end of my statement. Questions?

Every Democrat say the same damn thing with some variation, but not much different, and certainly not much longer.

For the purposes of a politically simple argument I think #1 and #4 are what you go with. Tell voters this bill will make things more expensive (tariffs) and are they not already loving how Trump has raised prices. His economic numbers are already sliding pretty hard so the electorate is primed to believe it. Tell them he's cutting healthcare and education with this CR (patently true) and that he's spending all his time with billionaires and thinks you can get fucked.

Anyway whatever political damage the Dems might sustain in this is best taken on board now when we have months and months before campaigning for the midterms even starts. Voters will not remember at all through another year of crazy Trump bullshit.

Just keep the statement to two sentences tops. And then at the end you say we tried to talk to Trump today but he was doing an infomercial to help out the world's richest man sell cars.
