Must hide the evidence that there was no evidence of fraud.
I don't know if that is necessarily the purpose here. I suspect it's more along the lines of permanently damaging the agency should a court or Congress order the reversal of the damage and the reconstitution of USAID.

Looks like someone has finally run the numbers on what the loss of USAID will cost humanity:
  • An estimated 1,650,000 people could die within a year without American foreign aid for H.I.V. prevention and treatment.
  • An estimated 500,000 people could die within a year without American funding for vaccines.
  • An estimated 550,000 people could die within a year without American funding for food aid.
  • An estimated 290,000 people could die within a year without American funding for malaria prevention.
  • An estimated 310,000 people could die within a year without U.S. funding for tuberculosis prevention.
Trump, Musk, Vought, and Rubio really going to rack up the body count to try and become one of the largest contributors to mass death in the 21st century.

Yep, these are all (3M+), brown and black people that the syphilitic orange menace and his lackeys
could give a FF about.
It's a feature, not a bug.

Some people have taken exception to me calling Musk a racist mass murderer even though that is exactly what he is.

Pretty much. The way they went about cutting all these programs - he might as well have just pushed people into ovens himself. And I don't doubt that Elon harbors, shall we say, traditional White South African sentiments. He'd really fit in in 1950s Alabama.

Orderly winding down of the programs would also have caused massive long-term problems, but at least it would have enabled some people and governments to try and fill some of the gaps.

Yeah, and people wonder why I simply don’t care what happens to Himmler’s car dealerships.

Why not both.

He gets added sociopath bonus points for his tasteless glee at the devastation he caused, with that 'feeding USAID into the woodchipper' remark.

Ah, so that's what he meant when he retweeted about how Hitler, Stalin, and Mao didn't murder millions, public sector employees did: "I'm simply continuing a proud historical tradition".

A preliminary injunction against Musk and DOGE that is supposed to reinstate most USAID functionality.

Sadly, massive damage to the organization, its mission, and reputation has already been done.

Will they not just repeatedly appeal till it gets to the Supreme Court?

In the meantime Musk should be obligated to personally put everything back together again (restoring deleted files, piecing together any documents put through shredders, tracking down fired front-line workers and personally chauffeuring them back to work, whatever it takes...)

Musk and Trump will be pissed but the real architect of the whole thing will just see a bump in the road and enjoy the damage already done .

Yes, very important to point out that they used this time to wreck the agency so even when their actions were found to be illegal it would be very hard to undo.

If they were ever going to trial for this it would serve as massive evidence of knowledge of guilt, as you wouldn’t need to do that if you thought they did actions would hold up, but I’m sure Trump will pardon them.

judge rules that usaid was shut down illegally

speaking of USAID, this former ambassador to African Union for Niger had a few things to say about it

~
WATCH | Arikana Chihombori-Quao, the former ambassador of the African Union says: “The majority of African leaders and leaders in the developing world are celebrating the exit of USAID.”

“Show me one country where USAID was in, and education improved. Show me one country where USAID was in, and healthcare improved. The social services they’re bringing — it’s peanuts. The American taxpayer needs to know that the billions of dollars that are being given to USAID, only a fraction is making it to the people.”

She told @SCClemons that USAID often entered countries under the guise of environmental, human rights or social justice agenda but the “real reason why USAID is in Africa … When you look at it on paper, it all looks really good. But they’re actually wolf in sheep’s clothing. They’re using that open access — sounding humanitarian — to constantly destabilize governments.”

Yes, US soft power has not always used for the good of the people who's countries we were or were not in (like, no shit - US foreign policy was historically tailored to meet US specific interests, just like every other country tailors their foreign policy for their own interests). That doesn't change the fact that a lot of people are now going to die from AIDS, hunger, and other diseases because of the sharp, sudden pull back of US funding and resources.

I don’t think this ruling will have much of an impact. Like others have said, the damage is already done, and they purposely used a wrecking ball to make it impossible for courts to undo. Besides, all Marco Rubio has to do is bless all of DOGE’s actions as “official USAID policy” within 14 days.

I’m curious if this ruling gives any standing for USAID employees to sue Musk personally for damages in a civil suit, since they can argue his actions did not properly represent the will or policy of the US government at the time they were illegally fired (since this court already found he was illegally appointed.) I think they’ll definitely appeal it anyway.
