I am having terrible problems with Adobe Camera Raw. When I am processing files with it, it is VERY slow, jerky, and virtually unusable. After I perform any operation on a file, it clogs up completely and takes minutes to unclog. The computer I use has the following specs:

Device name CreativeDen
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6850K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
Installed RAM 64.0 GB
Device ID FD410815-7714-4076-A000-0AB2A1A2A0C2
Product ID 00330-50321-30725-AAOEM
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display
Display adapter NVIDIA GeForce 3060

In addition, I have set the cache to a drive with plenty of space but only mediocre speed (it is several years old).

As is apparent from the above, my computer is reasonably capable. Also, it does not suffer the same problems when I am in Photoshop proper or any other of my graphics program (e.g., Coreldraw).

I cannot decide what to do.
(a) Do I need to upgrade to a faster system?
(b) Would instally a fast NVMe SSD drive for the cache solve the problem?
(c) Is it possible that I have not set up the cache or graphics card correctly, or is my graphics card too underpowered?
(d) other possibilities

I would be very appreciative if someone with expertise on this issue would help me decide what to do.

Also, is this a new problem, meaning did it work fine before but is now slow, or is this the first time you have tried it?

Can you list what hard drives you have installed and which one is the C: drive?
Hi Davey,
My C: drive is an SSD. I have a great many drives--too many to list. The problem has arisen in the past 30 to 45 days. It may coincide with my go back and reprocessing some old photos, from 2008 etc. I'm going to do more investigation on that.

Thanks for your input.

Open Event Viewer, System Log, filter by "disk" it will show any disk errors like bad sectors or blocks being retried or remapped. You could have a drive failing. Download HD Sentinel Trial version and use it to check health, SMART of each drive.

Here us a sample message from event view. There is a long stream of them, including one from today (18th) even though I have not tried to use Bridge or PS today.I'm going to try rebooting and see what happens.

I have come to the tentative conclusion that my problem with Bridge is that it is not purging my cache automatically after I have finished working with a particular file. It just keeps adding more files to the cache. Is there a way to set Bridge to purge the cache automatically? I don't see anything that would allow me to do that.

That is a common problem with Windows fetching device metadata from MS servers so that it will show device specific icons and provide more device-specific information in system or device properties. Apparently the server goes down from time to time, or they change the protocol, whatever and you get tons of these errors. That is probably not your problem.

The System log I referred to is shown here:

Select System, in the right pane, select Filter this log, and then select "Disk" and "disk" as the sources, in order to see if you have been logging lots of disk errors.

Also run (from Administrator Command Prompt:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

And after completing, run System File Checker:

sfc /scannow

I believe I NOW have discovered the problem: I had checked the "New AI features and settings panel" under Set Raw Defaults

After I have unchecked this and tried Bridge again, all of the problems have gone away!

I appreciate the help that all of you have offered.
