Until & unless #PlanetNine is sighted (by the Vera Rubin Observatory ), it shall remain nameless

Superstitious astronomers want it to remain nameless else they fear that it won't be discovered

there is a new very powerful telescope (Vera Rubin Observatory aka Large Synoptic Survey Telescope/LSST) coming up by the end of the year After that in another 2 years #PlanetNine will be found out (if it exists)

This would be some wild shit if true.

Maybe it's approach is a portent of doom and the end of a cycle and that's just why life sucks ass right now.

Maybe we should name this new one Pluto and rename the current Pluto. j/k

Is it possible to see a planet that far from the sun with a telescope or will it have to be located solely by its interactions?

There is a telescope to be installed by the end of the year in South America. hopefully that can spot it.

From a pastiche of things I've read and heard over the years, it seems about 50-50 if there's another planet just based on how other orbits either are or are not perturbed.

Anything fairly reflective probably would have been spotted long ago.

If planet 9 does exist, it's probably not reflective and outside of the plane of the rest of the solar system. Even so though, seems kinda lame that we haven't nailed it yet.

World's largest telescope gets its eyes. Camera (manufactured in USA) installed on the LSST Vera Rubin Observatory in South America

This telescope is due to go operational by the end of this year.

Within 2 years we would have got the confirmation if the mysterious planet 9 exists or not !!

Some experts believe that we could be just a few years away from discovering the elusive "Planet Nine" — or ruling out the existence of the hypothetical world for good.

But if we do find it, how long would it take for us to send a spacecraft to the far-flung world? And could humans ever make the trip?

If Planet Nine is ever detected, space agencies like NASA will want to send a probe to visit the distant world. But first, they will have to plan and get approval for such a mission.
"This will take at least a decade or more," Andreas Hein, a space systems engineer at the University of Luxembourg, told Live Science in an email. This is mostly because missions have to go through a lengthy and rigorous government selection process, he added.

But this process could be sped up depending on how odd the world appears in initial readings, Manasvi Lingam, a theoretical astrobiologist at the Florida Institute of Technology, told Live Science in an email. "If Planet 9 is anomalous in some respect, there could be more interest in expediting such a mission."

Once a probe is sent to Planet Nine, the next question is how long will it take to arrive?

In 2022, Hein, Lingam and part-time astronomer Adam Hibberd attempted to answer this question in a theoretical paper that was posted to the pre-print database arXiv. In this paper, which has not been peer-reviewed, the researchers estimated that it would likely take between 45 and 75 years for a spacecraft akin to NASA's Voyager probes to reach Planet Nine.

it might be possible to reach Planet Nine quicker if we could crack more advanced propulsion technologies, such as light sails — giant sails that catch sunlight or lasers to accelerate spacecraft, Hein and Lingam said.

In the 2022 study, the researchers suggested that a light sail could take as little as seven years to reach Planet Nine. However, it could take at least 20 years for light sails to become a reality, the team estimated.

As a result, if we found Planet Nine tomorrow, it would be better to send a current probe than to wait for alternative technologies to become available, Lingam said. "Laser sails can be launched later, if and when they become practical and cost-effective."

Why haven't we found Planet Nine?

According to Brown, the hidden Planet Nine is 'very, very far away'.

As a result of this, and how light travels, any light reflecting off of Planet Nine would be incredibly dim by the time it reached Earth. Hence the need for a super advanced piece of kit to view it.

How will the LSST find Planet Nine?

It's all to do with the technology inside the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

Located in Chile and costing $473 million (£374 million), it is home to the largest digital camera ever made by humanity

If successful, Brown reckons we could find Planet Nine within two years of this project being undertaken - while also coyly saying he's been saying that since 2016.

What the Discovery Could Mean

The implications of finding Planet Nine would be profound. It would:
  • Provide the first direct evidence of a new planet in our solar system since the discovery of Neptune in 1846.
  • Change our understanding of the formation and dynamics of the solar system, shedding light on how giant planets can shape their surroundings.
If all goes as planned, humanity could confirm the existence of Planet Nine within the next few years. Experts estimate that the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s capabilities could pinpoint its location by 2027 at the latest.
