ASRock B650M Pro RS
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
32 GB DDR5-6000
Corsair RM850x (2018) 850W PSU (manual)

I have just bought an RX 9070 XT, which will replace my RTX 3080.

I used the same PSU cable that I used with the RTX 3080 (page 6 of the manual, labelled 'PCIe 8 pin (6+2) cable').

I used Safe Mode and DDU to remove the NVIDIA drivers, and also used Safe Mode to install the latest Adrenalin v25.3.1 drivers.

I have a primary LG C4 (HDMI only) (144 Hz) and a secondary LG C2 (HDMI only) (120 Hz).

The RTX 3080 only had 1x HDMI port, so I used an active DP-HDMI adapter with the LC C2 and it all worked fine (144 Hz on the LG C4 and 120 Hz on the LG C2).

My new RX 9070 XT has 2x HDMI ports, so I was hoping to skip needing the DP-HDMI adapter.

When I connect the LG C4 on its own, it detects 144 Hz in Windows and I can play games with no problems - they run as exactly as they should (i.e. far quicker than the RTX 3080 did).

As soon as I connect the LC C2 (via HDMI), AMD's drivers say there are driver hangs (or something to that effect) and within a few seconds, the system locks up.

If I try to connect the LC C2 via DP (via that adapter), Windows detects it and I can use it a second display - but Windows is now detecting it only as having a max of 60 Hz (instead of 120 Hz that the display is capable of). When I try to force 120 Hz, I just get a black screen on the LG C2.

I am starting to already regret leaving NVIDIA.

Can anyone please assist?

Whenever I have display connection problems, I start disabling VRR and reducing the color depth to 8 bits, and then trying to set the desired refresh rate. Open Adrenaline, click the cog on the top right, then click Display, and then choose the C2 display in the dropdown.

On a side note, make sure that the selected Pixel Format is "RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB)", otherwise the colors will look squashed.

Also, check if every HDMI connection on the C2 can handle 120hz, and if some specific configuration must be set (Game Mode, or Extended Input, or something similar) - sometimes my TV forgets this configs when I change the connected device.

I only use DisplayPort connectors, and both work fine in Linux as well

Update to the latest driver 25.3.2, the fixed issues mentions a crash involving high refresh rate and HDMI. Might fix one or both of your bugged scenarios.

Update to the latest driver 25.3.2, the fixed issues mentions a crash involving high refresh rate and HDMI. Might fix one or both of your bugged scenarios.

Beta 25.3.2:
  • Incorrect gamma is exhibited while playing Counter-Strike 2 and using MSAA x8 on Radeon RX 9070 series graphics products.
  • Intermittent application crash may be observed in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle when settings are set to "Very Ultra" quality and Path Tracing is enabled. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to use the default Ray Tracing settings as a temporary workaround.
  • 3rd party tools that rely on our ADL SDK for detecting ROPs count will incorrectly report 64 ROPs.
  • Lower than expected performance may be observed while playing Assetto Corsa Competizione on Radeon RX 9000 series graphics products.
  • Intermittent system or application crash may be observed while pressing Alt-Tab during gameplay on some AMD Radeon Graphics Products such as the Radeon RX 6000 Series.
  • Intermittent system or application crash may be observed while using multiple high refresh rate (+120 Hz) monitors with HDMI connections.
  • Windows Update may overwrite the installed AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition with an older version of the graphics driver on Radeon RX 9000 series graphics products
Unfortunately, no improvement at all on my end.

What? Don't do that. Install them normally.
I have done that, too. Made no difference.

Also, it is absolutely fine installing them in safe mode, or the installer would throw errors (or inform you not to install in safe mode, at the very least).

Though as I said, I installed them in the standard environment too. The issues I am having would not be affected by the environment I installed the drivers in.
